Role

Guy is hired by the Black Fang forces attempting to stop Eliwood and Hector from reaching the marquess of Santaruz. He reminisces about how a man named Matthew saved his life by giving him food when he was near starvation. When the battle begins, he runs into Matthew, who calls in Guy's life debt to him, and Guy is forced to join Eliwood's side. He stays with him for the rest of his quest.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Guy is the first myrmidon on Eliwood's/Hector's path and fits the "early joining myrmidon" trope like a glove. He has great speed and skill at the cost of lower strength and durability. He joins with a Killing Edge, which complements his high base skill and mediocre base strength. Guy faces no competition for the Killing Edge when he joins; other units either have a low sword rank or kill everything anyway, like Marcus. These circumstances make Guy the best user of the sword.

Guy's early game offense is among the best in the army. There are few alternatives available, and Guy is capable of one-rounding enemies because he doubles everything and has a high crit chance with the Killing Edge. His offensive stats are outstanding in Hard Mode because he receives a +2 bonus to base strength, skill, and speed. However, his long-term potential suffers. Guy will be swordlocked for the entire game, meaning that, aside from the Light Brand and Runesword (both extremely limited), he cannot counterattack at 2-range. Many enemies in The Blazing Blade wield 2-range and 1-2 range weapons—a severe problem for Guy, because he cannot counter their attacks in most cases. He is a liability on the enemy phase unless all enemies he fights only have 1-range.

Guy also has a low constitution stat. Usually, it does not matter because enemies in The Blazing Blade are slow, and Guy's speed is very high. However, it prevents him from doubling with heavy swords in the early game. Even later in the game, Guy's constitution will be deficient because he only gains 1 constitution from his promotion. That makes it more difficult for him to double faster enemies with effective weapons like the Longsword. This flaw is relevant if Guy is used long-term and fights the enemy Valkyries in Chapter 29 (Hector Hard Mode).

Guy is also footlocked and does not become mounted upon promotion. His movement will forever be inferior to mounted units, and since the mounted units in The Blazing Blade are very good, the player will probably use many of them. Being footlocked also prevents Guy from having any utility—all Guy can do is fight enemies at 1-range. He is effective at it, but his most remarkable contributions are in the earlygame when the competition is sparse, and his good traits stand out more. In the long term, 1-2 range becomes essential, and most units can double because The Blazing Blade enemies are slow; Guy's tremendous speed is overkill and does not provide him with an advantage.

Guy's promotion does not fix his issues. It increases his sword rank and provides statistical increases but does not give him a mount or an additional weapon type. Guy's most significant flaws are being swordlocked and being unmounted, so promoting him is not a tremendous benefit. Raven is a superior candidate for the first Hero Crest promotion because his long-term potential is higher. Raven gains access to axes through promoting—and with it, 1-2 range. Guy only acquires some bulk and attacking power, and the statistical increases are not even that high.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

Guy is one of the characters added to the game in the Closing In update, and was first made available via a set of quests that ran between June 8, 2022 and June 24, 2022. Following this, he would be directly added to the 3★ and 4★ summoning pools beginning with the Legendary Hero summoning event at the end of the month. Only one variation of Guy is currently available in Heroes, based on his The Blazing Blade incarnation.

Endings

Guy, Mounted Swordsman
Guy continued in his quest to be the finest swordsman of all Sacae. His form was so perfected that all called him the Saint of Swords.

Guy and Priscilla
They fell in love amidst conflict, but Priscilla was a noble, and Guy was but a mercenary nomad. Guy rode away before her tears could stain the earth, though her smile was the brightest thing he ever saw.

Fire Emblem Characters: The Binding Blade & The Blazing Blade

He is the 85th character listed in this book. Guy scored 13th place in the online The Blazing Blade popularity poll whose results were included in the book.

Fire Emblem Character File 085: Guy
Gender: Male Estimated Age: Teen Title: Mounted Swordsman Origin: Sacae
Status: Plainsman Weapon: Sword

A young swordsman from the plains.

A plains boy of the Kutolah tribe of Sacae. He left his family to wander about, working as a mercenary to make ends meet every day, traveling to various countries. Some time ago while living in Caelin, he was saved by the Ostian spy Matthew. Matthew had convinced him to join Eliwood's army as a way to show his gratitude for that time.

Guy still has a very boyish looking face, and is often teased about it by his benefactor Matthew. Louise also completely treats him like a child, referring to him affectionately. However, his sword arm is fairly remarkable. Ordinarily, a Sacaen nomad uses a bow, but Guy is part of the minority to use a sword. He had poor skill with a bow, but after observing the Kutolah tribe's chief's sword skill, he became a swordsman with the declaration, "I want to follow that path."

Guy: Kutolah Blade

Introducing Guy, a young swordsman from the plains of Sacae in Elibe! He's an energetic young Hero who trains without rest to be the greatest swordsman in all of Sacae.

Guy left his home to chase his dreams, but along the way, he ran out of money and went hungry, eventually collapsing from starvation. That was when he was rescued by Matthew, a spy of House Ostia!

Afterward, Guy tried to make ends meet by working as a bodyguard for some bandits, only to run into Matthew again. After a bit of encouragement, he abandoned the bandits and helped Matthew instead.

That's how Guy came to be a member of Eliwood's army, but as strange as those first steps were, these encounters helped him to grow. He'll keep pressing on until the day he finally makes his dream come true!

Trivia

Guy's (left two) and Joshua's (right two) sprites as Myrmidon (top two) and Swordmaster (bottom two).
  • In the pre-release build of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Guy explicitly confirms to Priscilla that he is 15 years old;[4] the released version of The Blazing Blade does not confirm his age explicitly, though dialogue with Rath implies his age may be the same as his statement in the prototype.[5][6]
  • The English localization changed Guy's character endings to a significant degree. In the Japanese version, his solo ending states that he was seen as the Sword Saint's equal, instead of himself obtaining the title. In a similar fashion, his paired ending with Priscilla states that she convinced him to stay with her in the Japanese version, while it states that he leaves her in the localization.
  • Guy's combat sprites are unique from those of other Myrmidons and Swordmasters in the GBA games (such as Joshua, pictured); Guy wears a headband, and in his Swordmaster sprite he spreads his feet wider apart and extends his off-hand outward.
  • Guy's English flavor text in Heroes incorrectly claims Sacae has only three tribes, while the Japanese text specifies the Kutolah are one of the three great tribes of Sacae rather than the only three in existence. This is carried forward from his C support with Rath, which (mis)translated "サカの三大部族" the same way.
