My only wish was to be beside the one I love. If that is not to be, then it matters not what happens to me.
— Ena

Ena (pronounced /ˈinə/[key][2]; Japanese: イナ Ena) is a red dragon laguz who appears in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance as the tactician of Petrine, one of the Four Riders of Daein. She appears again in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, the sequel to Path of Radiance.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Role

Ena serves as the tactician of Petrine, one of the Four Riders of Daein, a group of elites in the Daein army, during most of the game. She chose to ally herself with Daein in an attempt to save her fiancée Rajaion, who had been warped into a Feral One years prior. Her grandfather Nasir helped her to get close to the leadership of Daein, and was forced into the kingdom's service as well.

Late in in the story, she appears as a boss in Chapter 21 in the form of a red dragon. Once defeated, Nasir betrays Ike and helps her escape.

Later, Ike encounters the Black Knight. Two outcomes can happen: either Ike is unable to defeat the Black Knight, after which Ena joins Ike's party, or Ike does defeat the Black Knight, after which Nasir joins Ike.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ena is one of two mutually exclusive playable dragon laguz, and joins if Ike failed to defeat the Black Knight near the end. She is one of few units capable of damaging Ashnard. She has extremely low movement, having lower untransformed movement than Generals, and promoted infantry movement when transformed. She has a low starting laguz gauge, taking around four turns to transform while having low movement. In combination of this, she can only attack at 1-range, severely limiting her attack capabilities. At base, she is one of the bulkiest units in the game, having high HP, defense, resistance, and Renewal. She has a respectable strength base, though her weapon is limited and she cannot use forges. She is also not fast enough to double most units in Endgame. Her weight stat is low for a laguz unit, so her shoving utility is limited for endgame. The Demi Band is extremely important for Ena to keep up with other infantry units in Endgame.

Ena has Renewal, Miracle, and Boon, all skills that buff her survival. Her mastery skill, Boon prevents her from getting put to sleep by bishops in the last two chapters. Despite having a full 40 capacity worth of skills at base, it can actually be a good idea for her to delete some of them, namely Renewal. As getting Ena in the first place is (usually) indicative of a weak Ike, Ena will likely be necessary to fight Ashnard in the Endgame, especially on Hard. To that end, it is highly recommended to give her Resolve, deleting Renewal to make space. Even with just her Demi Band bases on join, Resolve makes Ena powerful enough to deal 12 damage to Ashnard while not being doubled in the process; even though Ena would otherwise be getting doubled according to the combat forecast, once Ashnard hits her, Resolve will kick in and stop Ashnard's follow-up attack. Wrath, if still unused at this point, can further improve Ena's reliability and speed as the Ashnard-killer, although it's not completely necessary if one is willing to take the Ashnard fight slower.

Ena doesn't need to rely on her base stats alone, either. Her growths are also quite solid, particularly in Max HP, Skill and Speed. With 1 (3 if Demi Banded) Speed level(s), Ena doubles Phase 1 Ashnard with Resolve. Her other growths are not as impressive, although 35% Strength growth can still yield some dividends if her level is maxed out. Regardless, without Resolve active, Ena won't be one-rounding anything of note, so she's better off serving as a wall or chip attacker.

Ena cannot support any units, so her earth affinity is wasted.

Note: The above stats are Ena's default stats. If a Radiant Dawn game was started via a data transfer from Path of Radiance and Ena managed to reach level 20 in her highest possible class in the Path of Radiance save file, any stat Ena capped in Path of Radiance will result in a boost to her base in the stat in question in Radiant Dawn. The boost is a +5 for max HP, and +2 for strength, magic, skill, speed, luck, defense or resistance. See Data transfer § Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for more information.
Ena cannot gain enough points via level-up and stat-boosting items to cap luck, and thus cannot legitimately obtain a boost in it.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ena is the first playable red dragon laguz and is playable in endgame. She performs poorly as a combat unit overall. She has very low bases in strength, defense, skill, and speed; as her strike weapon is A rank and physical, she will not deal much damage. She is prone to getting doubled by most enemy units. Her magic and resistance base are high, though magic is highly situational as her attacks are physical. It can see some use in allowing Ena to Daemon Card enemies as magical chip, or get healing out of Imbue, but Nasir makes better use of the skill. As a dragon laguz, she has 1-2 range combat, allowing her to counter most enemy units. She is vulnerable to thunder magic despite her resistance because she gets doubled frequently, though many other endgame enemy units use magic so she can take a few wind, fire, or light hits. Her mobility is also low due to her class. As Laguz Gems are available, she does not need to use Laguz Stones or Olivi Grass to stay transformed. Path of Radiance Ena cannot cap any stats without doubling on stat boosters for skill or defense, so Radiant Dawn Ena does not benefit much from data transfers.

Ena has high growths for a laguz in magic, skill, speed, and resistance, but very low growths in strength and defense. If the player wants to use her as a combat unit, she needs several levels of immediate BEXP to cap magic, skill, speed, and resistance, and also raise her strength and defense. While Ena's combat would benefit from improving her strike rank, it is unrealistic for her to raise it quickly enough to be useful.

Ena is the only unit with Blood Tide for the first few chapters of endgame. This skill gives adjacent units a +5 boost to strength and skill, makes her a valuable support unit. This is valuable since many endgame enemy units have high defense and/or are standing on high defense cover tiles. This is especially valuable against Ashera's auras, as the auras are very bulky and dodgy. Her Blood Tide ability can stack with other tide abilities, including Gareth's Blood Tide and Nasir's White tide. Boon also lets her heal silenced or sleeping units without using up a turn, though this is situational. Renewal and Miracle help her bulk, though it is often better put on another unit that faces more combat than her.

Ena has an earth affinity which gives a significant avoid boost. As she joins late in endgame, most other units will likely have partners, and she will not have much time to establish a useful support. Since Ena functions best as a support unit, avoid is the most useful stat for her, so pairing her with leftover units with earth, dark, or thunder affinities will benefit both units the most.

Quotes

Battle quotes

...There's no reason for me to stay here any further.
— An unused quote intended to be Ena's escape quote in Path of Radiance.
If you had wished to extend your short life span, then you should not have appeared before me.
— Ena, as the boss of Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Beast-tribe cousin, I will warn you but once. Change your shape and flee from this place. Not even you can defeat a dragon.
— Ena, when fighting a beast laguz in Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Bird brother of Phoenicis... You know the power of the dragon tribes. Do you still think to challenge me?
— Ena, when fighting a hawk laguz in Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Ike: Why is a Goldoan dragon in the service of King Daein?
Ena: ...I... I merely want to be near the one I love... He is...my everything. That is why I must defeat you, or...I...I...

— Ena, when fighting Ike in Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Mist: Y-you... You're one of the dragon tribe, aren't you? When we ran into trouble in the southern sea, the dragon prince rescued us! I don't want to fight you! D-do I...have to?
Ena: You have met Prince Kurthnaga? I've no desire to steal the life of one who received his aid.
Mist: Whoo-hooo!
Ena: Ah, forgive me, little one. For even so... I cannot quit fighting.

— Ena, when fighting Mist in Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Prince of Serenes... You have no reason to be here. Do you wish to perish in this place?
— Ena, when fighting Reyson in Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Ashnard: Heh heh... Heeee heeee heh... So you're still alive, are you?
Ena: ...
Ashnard: Do you really want to do this? Do you believe you can defeat me?
Ena: I... I was mistaken. You are truly mad... ...Even so... I wanted to be near you. If I could have been near you, it would have been all right...
Ashnard: Did you think I would allow that? Whaaaa haa haa haaaaa!
Ena: King Ashnard of Daein. You will die at my hand!

— Ena, when fighting Ashnard in the Endgame in Path of Radiance.
Ena: Your Majesty...
Dheginsea: Come now, Ena. Fight.
Ena: I'm sorry, I can't. I may have turned my back on my king and left my own country, but I still belong to the dragon tribe. I wouldn't dare attack my own king. I couldn't.
Dheginsea: Then as your king, I order you. I order you to fight for Kurthnaga's life.
Ena: My king!
Dheginsea: You and he need each other. You are different from other dragons.
Ena: ... Very well, Your Majesty.

— Ena, when fighting Dheginsea, in Part IV, Chapter 3 of Radiant Dawn.
Ena: I'm sorry to see that you stand with the king, Grandfather.
Nasir: I turned on him once, and I will never do it again. Will you follow your grandfather's example?
Ena: You know that I won't. I can't. I'm sorry.
Nasir: It's all right, my dear. You can side with the prince. Stand by your convictions

— Ena, when fighting Nasir, in Part IV, Chapter 3 of Radiant Dawn.
Ena: Please let me pass, Gareth.
Gareth: I will not move. Such was the king's command.
Ena: Is there nothing I can do?
Gareth: No. I'm sorry to be so hardheaded, Ena. But I must serve my king.
Ena: Maybe we're the hardheaded ones... Opposing our king and our goddess. But we've chosen our path...
Gareth: Lady Ena. Promise me you'll look after him. Keep the prince safe.
Ena: Of course. I promise... I will protect him at any cost!

— Ena, when fighting Gareth, in Part IV, Chapter 3 of Radiant Dawn.

Death quote

...
— Ena, as the boss of Chapter 21 in Path of Radiance.
Urr... With this wound, I'll be nothing more than a burden. I've no choice. I must retreat. Good luck, everyone...
— Ena, in Chapter 28 of Path of Radiance.
Ena: Urrr... Only a...little farther...and I will be with him...
Ike: Ena! You can't go on with that wound! You must retreat!
Ena: No... No! Please, General Ike! Please let me go...
Ike: If you were thinking clearly, you'd see that you've become a burden.
Ena: Oh!
Ike: You came here because you have something you must do, correct? Please trust us, and let us help you.
Ena: ...Very well...

— Ena, in the Endgame of Path of Radiance.
Urgh... The wound is deep... But I was so close! But I'm not dead...? Something deep inside... I've... got to survive... Strange... I don't know why, but I can't die here. Not now. But if I don't get out of the way... I'll just trip everyone up. I must retreat from this battle.
— Ena, in Radiant Dawn.
Ena: Ughh...
Ike: Ena, stand down!
Ena: Forgive me... I underestimated them. I'll head...for cover...

— Ena, in Part IV, Endgame (1) in Radiant Dawn.
