Are you saying that, knowing the future, we should do nothing? We should simply allow people to die in order to preserve "fate"?
— Knoll, to Natasha

Knoll (Japanese: ノール Knoll) is a playable Shaman who appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is one of Grado's royal mages who formerly worked closely with Prince Lyon researching the Fire Emblem. He joins in Chapter 15.

Biography

Knoll was a researcher of arcane magic at the royal court of Grado, serving directly under Prince Lyon. Their primary research involved an ancient spell called the time shear, which would grant its user the ability to warp time.[1] Though attempts to cast this spell resulted in failure, the researchers were able to create brief glimpses into the future, studying ripples in the flow of time created by great disturbances.[2] One such glimpse allowed Lyon to predict a storm in Grado's south, leading to him barring ships from sailing; as a result, many lives were saved, affirming the belief that their research could aid the people of Grado.[1]

One year before the War of the Stones,[3] the court mages foresaw that a terrible earthquake would hit Grado, destroying half of the country and causing most of its citizens to die.[2][4] On Emperor Vigarde's orders, knowledge of the disaster was kept secret from the public.[5] Knoll was present for the emperor's death soon after. Knoll continued to assist the devastated, desperate Prince Lyon in his research, opening the seal placed on the Sacred Stone of Grado—also known as the Fire Emblem—on his orders despite attempts to object to it,[6] and looking into ways to restore the deceased emperor. Eventually, Lyon succeeded in his efforts through creating the powerful Dark Stone from the energy sealed within the Sacred Stone, which contained the soul of the Demon King, Fomortiis.[3][7] Though Knoll was not present for the stone's creation and its act of resurrection,[3] he bore witness to Lyon destroying the Sacred Stone afterwards.[7] Subsequently, Grado launched a sudden invasion of Renais under the orders of the resurrected emperor, by request of Prince Lyon.[8]

Knoll objected to Lyon's usage of the Dark Stone, and was thrown in prison for it, sentenced to be executed. One day prior to his stated execution,[8] he was rescued by Prince Ephraim of Renais, who had captured the Grado capital. He explained the situation behind Grado's sudden invasion to Ephraim, as well as what had happened to Lyon, before leading the prince to the room in which the Sacred Twins of Grado were located, intending for the weapons to be used for good. Afterwards, he joined the Renais forces, believing it to be what Lyon would want of him.[9] When the war concluded, he returned to Grado, where he remained during the foretold disaster and helped rebuild; afterwards, he disappeared without a trace.[10]

Role

Knoll is a playable character. On Eirika's route, he automatically joins at the end of turn 2 enemy phase of Chapter 15 alongside Duessel and the rejoining Ephraim. On Ephraim's route, he automatically joins at the end of Chapter 14. On both routes, he is mentioned by Ephraim at the end of Chapter 15 as the one who explained the Dark Stone to him. Additionally, he appears during a flashback at the end of Chapter 20 on Ephraim's route.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Knoll joins after the game's halfway point, very slightly later on Eirika's route. However, he joins at a high enough level for instant promotion with a Guiding Ring. He can promote into Summoner, one of the best support classes in The Sacred Stones. Summoners can summon phantoms, 1-HP controllable minions who can attack and take hits. Since their HP is so low, enemies tend to prioritize them when attacking, making them perfect for baiting powerful enemies and distracting them from proper units.

Knoll's greatest issue is that summoning phantoms is his only true utility, and it requires him to promote. Without promotion, Knoll is far from useful, and even after promotion, all he does well is summon phantoms. He joins late and his stats are mediocre. His magic is high, but his speed is too low to double, his physical bulk is abysmal, and his 0 base luck means that almost any physical opponent can crit him. When he joins, the player will have access to many mounted units who can one-round and take hits; Knoll is unmounted, cannot one-round, and cannot take hits, so his combat effectiveness is lackluster. This is why his promotion to Druid is not recommended, as even if he was good at combat Druid's access to Anima is fairly niche. He cannot even contribute with staves, because without promotion, he only has C-rank dark magic and no other weapon ranks. Both of Knoll's promotions give him E-rank staves, but E-rank staves are hardly useful at this point of the game.

Overall, Knoll's greatest advantage and utility is easy access to the Summoner class, since his base level is high enough to promote and his only competition for the class is Ewan. Since Ewan is a Trainee who needs an enormous amount of training to reach Summoner, Knoll will be most players' only Summoner, and having at least one is useful for several strategies.

Personality

Knoll is a quiet man, not very talkative or social. He is slightly awkward and overly formal in conversation, and slightly shy. However, he is good-hearted, having helped Lyon with the same vision. Together, and along with the rest of the team of researchers, they aimed to avert disaster. According to him, future catastrophes cause ripples in time that can be read.[2] He seems to have good reflexes, having dodged Lute's attacks twice.[11] He is very intelligent, and knows much about magic and the flow of time. Wise but antisocial, he is a mysterious figure.

Knoll was formerly a research for Prince Lyon and Grado's royal court. He and Lyon seem to have been close, as Knoll holds Lyon in very high regards, to the point that after Lyon is lost to the Demon King, he feels that he has lost everything.[12] He recognizes Natasha as one of the clerics at the Imperial Temple.[13] He still holds faith in Grado, however, and after the war, helps in the restoration of Grado. Afterwards, he disappears, never seen again.

  1. 1.0 1.1 "Knoll: We read of a spell entitled the time shear. It causes, in effect, a hole in time. This spell warps time, punches a hole through cause and effect. [...] We lack the knowledge to reproduce this ancient spell today. Prince Lyon, however, was convinced that we could unravel its secret. He felt we could use it to predict--and even prevent--future events.
    Natasha: ...Prevent...the future?
Knoll: Oh, we dedicated years to studying this spell. You see, the greater the disaster, the farther it sends ripples through time. We learned to read these ripples from the future, hoping to save lives. If we could know when a disaster would strike, we could evacuate people. We could save millions of lives. [...] With our aid, Prince Lyon predicted a great storm rising in the south. He barred ships from leaving port, and, oh, how the people complained. But the storm came, and the seas raged. We saved countless lives. And Prince Lyon cared not at all if the people loved him for it. He only wanted them to be safe.
" — Knoll and Natasha, B Support, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 "Knoll: We students of ancient magic, along with Prince Lyon himself, were researching certain arcane techniques lost long ago. We were able to reproduce one...phenomenon, but only briefly.
    Duessel: ......
Knoll: I should be more concise. Prince Lyon and I pierced the veil that clouds our futures.
Duessel: What? You...could see into the future? How is that possible? What magic is powerful enough to--
Knoll: Time is like the water of a river: it flows ever on, never stopping. Certain disturbances can cause ripples that speed swiftly downstream. If you can see the water, you can read the flow, the ripples, the waves. [...] Just think of it: If you knew a storm was coming in advance, you could evacuate everyone in its way. If you could see what was to come, you could help those who might have died. Prince Lyon explained this to us with much joy in his voice and heart. His power would, at long last, be able to help the citizens of Grado.
    Duessel: ......
Knoll: We continued our work. There were ceremonies, rituals--such horrors... And then we saw it. In the near future, Grado would be ravaged by catastrophe. [...] No, it's not the conflict in which we are currently embroiled. This event is still in our future. We saw Grado. We saw the earth crumble. We saw our people dying. We saw the shape our future would take.
Duessel: What? That's madness... Idiocy! I've lived a long life, and I've never heard of anything like that. Not ever.
Knoll: I am not surprised that you do not believe me, General. We could not believe it, either. We tried to disprove what we had seen. But nothing could shake the vision. In this disaster, Grado would be destroyed. Countless would die. Those who died quickly would be spared the slow horror of starvation. This was when the emperor died, by the way. Lyon was shattered by despair. He devoted himself to research, and then came the Dark Stone...

  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 "Knoll: It all began one year ago... That was when the emperor died. [...] Prince Lyon was devastated. He fell into an endless despair. He felt unworthy to take the throne, unable to rule without his father.
    Ephraim: ......
Knoll: He then began to look for a way to overturn his father's demise. He wanted to resurrect him--
    Ephraim: Wait, resurrect him?
Knoll: Yes. As you know, the Stone of Grado is possessed of...unique powers. It was once used to seal away the Demon King, and it alone held the dark one's soul. It burned within with the Demon King's rage, and we called it the Fire Emblem. Prince Lyon and a team of mages skilled in ancient lore hoped to harness its energies. I remember the joy in Prince Lyon's eyes when he spoke of using it to save lives.
    Ephraim: Lyon...
Knoll: Prince Lyon told us he intended to use the Fire Emblem to restore the emperor. His death had been kept from the public, but rumors were beginning to fly. We knew we had to hurry, before the people learned the truth of the emperor's death. Prince Lyon dedicated himself to research, skipping meals, foregoing sleep... And then...
    Ephraim: What happened?
Knoll: I wasn't there, so I did not witness it firsthand. By the time I arrived, the deed had already been done. The Fire Emblem had been shattered, split in two. One was a Sacred Stone, and the other...
" — Knoll and Ephraim, Chapter 14 (Ephraim), Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  4. "Natasha: You said that you could see...ripples of future disasters, is that it? And the greater the disaster, the more clearly you could read it? Does that mean you saw something? Some tremendous disaster to come?
    Knoll: ......
Natasha: And in knowing about the disaster, Lyon thought he could prevent it. Could he have... Was he studying the Sacred Stone to find a way to prevent this disaster?
Knoll: [...] ...Within five years, half of Grado will be destroyed.
    Natasha: Destroyed?
Knoll: In the southern half of the continent, there will be a terrible quake. The ground will shake violently. The earth will crack open wide. Cities will fall. Fields will burn in the earth's hot blood. Few will survive. This is what we have foreseen.
" — Natasha and Knoll, A Support, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  5. "Vigarde: Lyon...tell me again. What will happen to Grado?
Lyon: I have seen it many times now, as have the court mages. It's the same every time, Father. It's always the same. Sometime in the coming years, the southern continent will collapse. Countless people will die instantly. Those who don't will likely starve.
    Vigarde: ......
Lyon: None but the mages and I know of the vision, as you ordered.
" — Vigarde and Lyon, Chapter 20 (Ephraim), Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  6. "Knoll: Prince Lyon...
Lyon: Knoll... I... Open the seal on the Sacred Stone of Grado.
Knoll: The Sacred Stone? But that's...
Lyon: You've seen the scrolls. You know there is a way to stop the coming disaster. If those scrolls are correct, the rites they describe can save all of Grado. But it will require a staggering amount of dark energy--and a sacrifice as well. The human body cannot contain the powers these rites demand... And yet... Of the five Sacred Stones, Grado's alone possesses a greater power... It is the very prison housing the soul of the ancient Demon King. If we could harness its power, well... If we can do that, we can avert disaster and save countless lives.
    Knoll: But you forget...
Lyon: I forget nothing! I know I am too weak. Because of me, all of Grado will be destroyed. I need... I need the Sacred Stone. I must become stronger. I will become stronger.
" — Knoll and Lyon, Chapter 20 (Ephraim), Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  7. 7.0 7.1 "Lyon: Oh, hello, it's you... What was your name again? Ah, yes. Knoll. You're one of my researchers. I've glad tidings for you. My father is back.
    Knoll: The emperor?
    Vigarde: ......
Lyon: Come, Father... Open your eyes.
    Vigarde: ......
Knoll: Your... Your Majesty! This is incredible! Prince Lyon, what miracle is this? It cannot be! What--? What is that stone?
Lyon: This? This is the Dark Stone. It bears even more power than any Sacred Stone. I extracted and condensed all of the magic bound within the Fire Emblem. The Dark Stone's power is what gave my father back the spark of life.
    Knoll: The Dark Stone...?
Lyon: Now that the Dark Stone is mine, I have no need for this empty husk.
