| “ | You all see my sword, correct? I trust I need not introduce the demon blade. Beware, for Mystletainn craves the blood of men! Who dares to come forth and slake its thirst? | ” | — Ares, to Bramsel |
|---|
Ares (Japanese: アレス Aless) is the son and heir of Eldigan the Lionheart of the Agustrian state of Nordion, a full-blooded descendant of the Crusader Hoðr, and the inheritor of the Demon Sword Mystletainn. As an infant, after he and his mother Grahnye fled to Leonster in the wake of Agustrian civil war and the death of his father, he was orphaned following Leonster's fall and adopted by the mercenary Javarro[2]. As he aged he became a mercenary himself working for Javarro's group, and developed a reputation as the "Black Knight". Eventually on a job in Dahna in Grann 777, he left Javarro's service and allied with Seliph in his revolution against the Grannvale Empire.

Biography
While on deployment in Dahna with Javarro's force in the employ of Bramsel, he received word of the approach of the Isaach liberation army under Seliph. He remarked his eagerness to confront the son of Sigurd, his father's "sworn enemy", to Lene*, whom he had befriended while at Dahna. He stopped Bramsel from attempting to sexually assault Lene, threatening him with Mystletainn and causing him to back down. After the fall of Fort Melgen, Ares was sent out with Javarro's army to attack Seliph's army before they could come for Dahna; shortly afterward, he swore to cut ties with Javarro after Javarro told him to leave Lene to her inevitable fate at Bramsel's hands.
Ares then encountered Seliph on the battlefield and revealed to him the claim of Sigurd's role as Eldigan's mortal enemy, and was met by Seliph's claim of Eldigan and Sigurd being close friends. Shocked at the possibility of his worldview being wrong, he chose to temporarily ally with Seliph until he could straighten out the reality of the situation. He soon received confirmation of this from his cousin Nanna, who presented him with a letter from Eldigan himself addressed directly to Ares, which she had inherited from her mother and Eldigan's sister Lachesis.[3]

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ares is a Cavalier who automatically becomes playable midway through Chapter 7. Ares is an extremely powerful unit owing to a combination of his stats, skills, and personal weapon. Mystletainn, his personal weapon, is very powerful, with 30 might, 5 weight, +20 skill, +10 in resistance, and the Critical skill. He also has a mount and Follow-Up, Adept, and Vantage as skills.
Further solidifying Ares's reputation as a powerful and reliable fighter are his solid bases and great growths. While his 30% speed growth might seem low, because of the low speed of most enemies in the second generation of Genealogy of the Holy War he will have no trouble doubling for the majority of the game. His low resistance base is easily covered by the bonus offered by Mystletainn, and his resistance growth is also fairly solid. Ares also has the ability to wield any sword in the game (besides personal swords) at base and has access to B rank lances upon promotion; however, because of their rather high weight, Ares will generally fare better by sticking with swords. This is without mentioning how Ares is also in the cavalier class, a class that benefits significantly from the huge maps of Genealogy and the roads which boost his movement.
Ares's main flaw is that he cannot inherit any items and, as such, is forced to buy them with his own money. Furthering this is that Mystletainn's high cost means he cannot freely use it when he joins. However, thanks to his excellent combat, he can clear the arena without any significant trouble, but the player should be careful as the costs of repairing Mystletainn can be quite high and may prevent him from having enough money to buy all the items he desires. As such, he makes great use of the Thief's Band, obtainable from a village in Chapter 8, since it lets him steal money from every enemy he attacks without needing to use the weak and inaccurate Thief Sword, and will typically end up with hefty sums of cash after enduring many fights during enemy phase with the band in his inventory.
Additionally, in the later stages of the game, Ares starts to lose viability as a bosskiller as boss enemies become strong enough to double Ares or have skills to kill him on counterattack if Ares whiffs both Critical and Adept. His 30% Speed growth starts to rear its ugly head as he averages into 22-23 Speed, but is burdened by Mystletainn's 5 weight; this leaves him at 17-18 AS, giving him dubious if not losing matchups against the likes of Riddell, Boyce and Scipio. A Speed Ring is only a stopgap fix, as Boyce, Ovis and Simia still outspeed him even with a +5 boost, so it's generally better to let someone faster take the lead.
Overall, Ares is one of the strongest units in the second generation and will be an invaluable until the lategame.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Ares is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Genealogy of the Holy War second-generation character set. He is also present as an enemy in the Lost Bloodlines 1 and 3, and Rogues & Redeemers 1, 2 and 3 of Awakening's DLC.

Genealogy of the Holy War
The aftermath of Agustria's civil war left it to be annexed by Grannvale, and so the land fell to harsh tyranny. After years of abuse, its people dearly wished for the rise of a unified nation, one led by House Nordion, heirs of the legendary hero Eldigan. And so the people eagerly welcomed the homecoming of Ares. In Ares, the people saw the very same aura Eldigan himself had borne in his youth.
Ares returned to the country along with, among others,
Ares's lover, his wife,
[...]
and worked with them to unite Agustria.
Under the reign of Ares, Agustria will soon become Grannvale's most crucial partner and will grow to be greater than ever before.

Ares is the son of Eldigan, the king of Nordion. Also called the Black Knight, he's a descendant of the crusader Hoðr, which allows him to wield Mystletainn, the Demon Sword!
Ares lost both of his parents as a child, and later joined a band of mercenaries, going from battle to battle across the continent. With his outstanding skills, he soon distinguished himself as a truly capable cavalier.
After learning from his captain that his close companion Lene had been imprisoned by the lord of Dahna, he cut ties and rebelled. He then joined forces with Seliph's army who were battling the Grannvale Empire.
