Tobin (Japanese: ロビン Robin) is a Villager from Ram and a good friend of fellow Ram villagers Alm, Gray, Kliff, and Faye. He was one of the first people to accompany Alm when he decided to join the Deliverance.

Fire Emblem Gaiden

Role

Tobin is one of the first characters recruited in Gaiden. He agrees to follow Alm and seize Zofia's castle at the beginning of the game. After the war, he becomes a knight of Valentia.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Role

Tobin reprises his role in the remake, where he is recruited automatically and has a much larger role interacting with Alm. Unlike Gray, he's more hesitant in joining him, but accepts when Lukas mentions soldiers get paid for their efforts, as he wants to help his family. He remains by Alm's side as his trusting friend, and frequently comments on the ongoing events, either with Alm himself, or Gray. Once again, he becomes part of Valentia's knighthood at the end of the game, and is granted a title and castle as a reward for his friendship and loyalty to Alm.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Tobin is one of the first characters to join Alm's party, doing so at the beginning of Act 1 as a level 2 Villager. His most prominent boon is his base 6 Speed, the fastest of all four Villagers. This allows him to double enemy Brigands at the beginning of the game and finish them off after one round of combat with Alm or Lukas, giving him a very smooth ride to level 3 and his initial promotion. While his speed growth is bad, his high base means he will still usually meet most important speed thresholds depending on his class choice with some level ups or help from the sacred springs. His base skill of 2 is poor, but he has the best skill growth among the villagers. His attack is less impressive, and he will usually have to rely on his classes' promotion bonuses for his offense.

As a Cavalier, he will be very similar to Clive stat-wise, especially after they promote. However, as there is only one Ridersbane, there is little need for a Cavalier Tobin, as his offensive stats will generally lag behind.

He can do well as a Soldier, as the class line's high base Attack and Defense patch up his growths quite nicely, and his high base speed allows him to avoid the class's main weakness. While he has a pitiful 15% speed growth, he only needs 8 attack speed to double the enemies he needs to in Act 3, which he can reach with the help of a speed spring. Thanks to the strong stats of the Knight, and later Baron, he will be able to one-round most enemies he doubles with great longevity. His stats as a Soldier are less impressive, but his base speed is high enough to allow him to double enemy Soldiers in Act 1.

Tobin is good as a Mercenary, however this is due to the Mercenary class being very strong. His base Speed is squandered on a class that automatically grants anyone 10 Speed, and while he is arguably better than Gray in some stats, he is entirely outclassed by Kliff, and he also has much better choices outside of Mercenary than the other two do. These problems persist if he Dread loops back into Villager as well.

His canon-favored Archer class is a solid choice, allowing him to fight safely from the back lines and get access to the almighty Killer Bow later on. However, Archers have poor base stats and shaky accuracy at first and the selection of bows is limited early on. By the time Archer Tobin becomes useful, he has to compete with Python, who can also use the Killer Bow and has a higher speed growth, though Tobin's high skill growth will improve the inconsistent accuracy faster, something that Python particularly struggles in the early game.

As a Mage, his high base speed means he can hit the 8 speed needed to double Soldiers in Act 1 with only one or two speed spring boosts, depending on his early level ups, making him one of the strongest units in early Act 1. He gets the lightweight and powerful Excalibur at level 6, which is doable by the end of Act 1, which allows him to consistently double the majority of enemies and makes him one of the best units against Knights, which are otherwise very difficult to kill. As with most Mages, he loses steam mid-Act 3 due to the class' low movement, and the lack of diversity in his spell list and of a high-damage spell like Sagittae will eventually cause him to struggle in taking out non-armored enemies without critical hits from Excalibur, though he still retains great damage against Knights. He eventually picks up Physic as a level 5 Sage to ensure that there's always something for him to do, though this comes very late.

Personality

Tobin has minimal dialogue in Gaiden, but he is loyal to Alm, whom he is willing to follow in Alm's quest to take back Zofia.

In Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, he is constantly competing with Alm and Gray, suggesting that he has an inferiority complex. However, he eventually accepts being part of their strength. As the eldest of his family, he maintains an air of brotherly warmth and kindness which transfers to his friends. He greatly values familial ideals as he joined the Deliverance to support his family monetarily.

Endings

Gaiden

As one of the knights of the kingdom, he works towards the restoration of Valentia.

Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

If Gray survived
As one of the most scrupulous knights in the One Kingdom's Brotherhood, Tobin spent his life serving his friend King Alm. The king, in turn, placed a great deal of trust in Tobin, eventually granting him both a title and his own castle.

If Gray died
Unable to move past Gray's death, Tobin abruptly vanished before reappearing just as suddenly several years later. At King Alm's suggestion, he joined the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights. The talkative, playful Tobin of old, however, was gone forever.

Tobin

Tobin is an Irish surname of Norman origin, from the location Saint-Aubin.[1] Probably changed from Robin to differentiate him from the Awakening character.

English

Japanese

ロビン

Officially romanized as Robin. Robin is a diminutive form of Robert, which is a name of Germanic origin which is a combination of *hrōþiz "fame" and *berhtaz "bright"; the reconstructed Proto-Germanic form of the name is *Hrōþiberhtaz. Likely named after Robin Hood, an English folk hero who along with his merry men, used his archery skills to "rob from the rich and give to the poor". This is supported by the character wielding a bow in official artwork. Robin Hood was also a yeoman, a medieval social class of land-owning commoners. They ranked between the peasantry and landed gentry, but had a closer associated with commoners, relating to the character's commoner background.
