Klein (Japanese: クレイン Klein) is a playable sniper in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He is a general of Etruria, son of Pent and Louise, and older brother of Clarine.

Biography

Klein is the son of Count Pent and Countess Louise of House Reglay, one of the most influential noble families in Etruria, as well as the older brother of Clarine.

As a toddler, Klein was often taken to visit Etruria's royal palace by his father. There, he played with Etruria's Prince Myrddin, who was quite taken with Klein, so asked for Klein to live in the palace and be his brother. However, Klein refused himself, instead vowing to become the prince's knight.[4]

When Klein was four years old,[5] he visited Aquileia's greatest arena with his family. However, he was attacked by a lion during the opening display, and saved by the arena fighter Dieck, leaving Dieck with many scars. As a reward for this deed, Pent hired Dieck for House Reglay, and Dieck spent two years with the family. Klein looked up to Dieck akin to an older brother and he was treated as family, but Dieck left House Reglay when Klein was six[1] to quell the negative rumors associated with a noble family taking in an arena fighter.[5] Sometime shortly before this, Klein's younger sister Clarine was born.[6]

Klein later joined the Etrurian military, and was soon promoted to commander. Though he admired Knight General Perceval and the two were friends,[7] they did not work together.[8] Additionally, Klein became a vassal of Prince Myrddin's at some point in time.[9] Klein's squad was stationed on the Western Isles alongside a group of Ilian mercenaries led by Thea, tasked with protecting the populance from bandits and keeping the peace, which also meant Klein noticed little of the unrest in Etruria following the supposed death of Prince Myrrdin when Klein was eighteen.[9]

During the Disturbance of Bern, when Klein was nineteen,[1] the Lycian Army was sent to the Western Isles, supposedly to defeat the bandits there, though they quickly sided with the local rebellion against the Etrurian occupation of the Isles. Klein was told the Lycian Army had sided with the bandits instead and now planned to rob the villages, though he chose to defect to the Lycian Army after discovering he was deceived. He also convinced the mercenary captain Thea to follow suit.

In the army, he reunited with his sister Clarine, as well as General Perceval, and Prince Myrddin, now disguised as the bard Elffin. Klein remained with the Lycian forces until the war's end, after which he quit the military and instead became a diplomat for Etruria.[10]

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Klein appears as an enemy in either Chapter 10B or Chapter 11A. He can be recruited with either Roy or Clarine, and can in turn recruit Thea in the same chapters. Once Klein is recruited, the units accompanying Klein become allied, and, should they all survive, an Orion's Bolt is awarded at the end of the chapter.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Klein is a sniper that joins in Chapter 11A or 10B depending on the route the player has chosen. While Klein's bases on normal mode might seem a bit low for his join time, thanks to hard mode bonuses he is a particularly strong prepromote on hard mode. Klein is capable of one rounding most enemies in his joining chapters thanks to his aforementioned high bases and A rank in bows, giving him access to almost every bow in the game and making him a great candidate for Mulagir. Klein also has fairly decent growths for The Binding Blade standards, especially for a prepromoted unit, however he won't make very good use of said growths thanks to his nonexistent enemy phase. In Chapter 12, the player gets access to the Brave Bow and Klein will likely be its first user. The Brave Bow sports somewhat shaky hit rates, but those are largely irrelevant thanks to Klein's excellent skill and the brave effect allowing it to compensate for a miss, and high might allowing him to take out or deal great damage to many enemy units. Another thing going into Klein's favor is the high enemy quality of The Binding Blade and lack of good 1-2 range making bows desirable, as well as multiple chapters containing dangerous enemy flyers that Klein is particularly useful against. Klein faces somewhat steep competition form Igrene, Sue, and Sin, though because he starts out promoted means he does not have to worry about being denied access to a promotion item. Igrene comes with better bases and her lower bow rank is largely irrelevant as the Killer Bow is the best bow in the game, while both Sin and Sue have a mount giving them far greater utility as well as the ability to retaliate at 1 range upon promotion. Klein's combat will also fall off in the later parts of the game as the enemies will become too strong for him to one round.

Overall, Klein is a solid unit that will be useful for large parts of the game, but fall off somewhat later. Unlike most GBA Archers and Snipers who are largely useless, the high amount of enemy flyers, the more player phased focused gameplay of The Binding Blade, access to accurate weaponry, and the lack of good 1-2 range, means that Klein stands out as a useful unit that requires no investment to contribute well on most teams.

Role

While Klein does not directly appear in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, he is briefly implied during a support conversation between Pent and Louise that is available in the Final Chapter, where Louise informs Pent that she is pregnant with Klein.[12]

Fire Emblem Characters: The Binding Blade & The Blazing Blade

Klein's artwork from The Binding Blade is featured in a file in the Fire Emblem Characters book, alongside details regarding himself and his role in the game's story. He is the 33rd character listed in this book. Klein scored 35th place in the online The Binding Blade popularity poll whose results were included in the book.

Fire Emblem Character File 033: Klein
Gender: Male Estimated Age: 19 Title: Silver Nobleman Origin: Etruria
Status: Young Count of House Reglay Weapon: Bow

The magnificent general who leads the Etrurian army.

The eldest son of Etruria's House Reglay. The governor of the Western Isles, Arcardo, commanded Klein to move to suppress Roy's army. However, on the battlefield, Klein learned the truth through talking with Roy and joined his side. He possesses beautiful looks and a mild personality. Though he looks fragile at first glance, he can persevere more than others. He has sharp judgement.

Despite being a youth at 19 years old, he holds such great talent that even the Knight General Perceval says, "anybody who works under Klein is blessed." Had he known that the governor of the Western Isles was corrupt, he would have joined the Lycian Army without hesitation. As expected, he is not a man of many words. Occasionally, his young nature is seen by his younger sister Clarine at times when he yearns for an older brother like Dieck—who had saved his life when Klein was a child.

Officially romanized as Klein. Possibly named after Louis Klein, a French general. He fought in the Napoleonic Wars, but ended up voting for Napoleon's abdication in 1814, similar to how the character initially fights for Etruria and then sides against them. Louis Klein also quit the military after the Prussian Campaign and became a senator, similar to the character's ending.
