Saber (Japanese: セーバー Savor) is a mercenary appearing in Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. He appears at Novis and joins Celica on her quest to the Temple of Mila and, later, Rigel.
Contents
Fire Emblem Gaiden
Role
Celica, in her travels to the Temple of Mila, found a drunk mercenary in a bar at Novis port. The mercenary, Saber, was upset that she interrupted his drinking, though he was hired by Celica regardless,[3] seeming to have had a bit of a drunken mood swing.
Saber travels with Celica on the rest of her journey and until the conclusion of Gaiden.
Starting stats and growth rates
Promotion stat gains
Soldier Cavalier Mage Archer Mercenary
- In Gaiden, promotion gains consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class' base stats. If the character's stats are higher than their promoted class' base stats, they will not receive any bonus; however, if all stats are higher, then they will receive +1 to HP.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
The Valentian Accordion expands on Saber's life before ending up in Celica's service. He was once an ace soldier in the Rigelian Empire, until he fell into a trap set up by noblemen who disliked his commoner's upbringing and lost the use of his right eye. After a friend of his betrayed him, Saber challenged them to and won a duel to the death, but was forced to flee to Zofia.
In the story proper, as with Gaiden, Celica meets a drunken Saber at a tavern. Despite being upset for his drinking being interrupted, Saber accepts Celica's job request of protecting her on the way to the Temple of Mila after Celica offers her Golden Dagger as payment. As Celica and her party make their way through Zofia's waters fighting pirates, Saber becomes annoyed because fighting pirates was not part of Celica's job description, but continues with the group anyway.
Saber assists Celica in fighting off Rigelian brigands after Boey and Mae leave them behind as they rushed into Zofia Castle before the battle.
Throughout Celica's adventures, Saber takes on an advisory role, cautioning Celica on what dangers lie ahead.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Saber is a Mercenary who joins Celica's army in early Act 2. He has solid base stats which allow him to contribute from the moment he joins.
Saber has better physical durability than the other units in Celica's army when he joins—he has equal defense to Celica and Boey and equal HP to Boey, but does not consume HP when he attacks. His base speed is also high enough to avoid getting doubled by many enemies even on Hard mode, which helps make him the best unit available to take attacks from enemy Pirates. However, his damage output is worse than the mages, especially when factoring in the priory springs, and there are few good swords available early on for him to use.
Saber can promote to Myrmidon by the end of Act 2 with some favoritism. If the player wishes to, it is possible to get him promoted to a Dread Fighter before the desert in Act 4 by getting him promoted to Myrmidon before Zofia Castle Battle, getting him to level 7 after recruiting Atlas, and then backtracking for the Seabound Shrine's experience wells. A Dread Fighter Saber has +1 movement in the desert and 24 attack and 16 speed with a Silver Sword, though this is at the cost of experience wells which are hotly contested by many strong units.
As a Myrmidon, Saber will be able to promote to Dread Fighter at level 10 as his third-tier promotion. Having at least one Dread Fighter is highly valuable for Act 4 as enemy Dread Fighters are very difficult to kill due to their speed, and a playable Dread Fighter is likely to be the only class capable of reaching the necessary doubling thresholds. It also has Resistance +5 and Apotrope—the latter of which halves damage taken from black magic—which is useful against the many dangerous enemy black magic users, such as Witches, Arcanists, and Cantors. Dread Fighter also has 3 movement through Act 4's dense swamps, allowing Saber to move faster than most units.
As a Dread Fighter, Saber can promote to Villager at level 10, allowing him to adopt a new class line or simply level up repeatedly through this promotion. This is not necessary for the main game, as the stats of enemies are not high enough to warrant sacrificing high movement and resistance for additional level-ups; however, it may be useful for Thabes Labyrinth, which has much stronger enemies than Duma Temple.
Fire Emblem Engage

Saber appears as an equippable Bond Ring. He can be summoned using Celica's Emblem Ring.

Personality
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Despite Saber often calling Celica out on her idealistic nature as he is aware of the necessity of violence, he is nonetheless loyal to her, as he never once considers abandoning the party, and acts as a father figure to her. He is far more insightful than most members of her party, as he catches on the quickest that Celica is not just any priestess, and understands her intentions better than most.
