No matter how quiet a village you hail from, in the hands of a capable teacher, one can become every bit as strong as a royal knight. I find that thought quite inspiring.
— Lukas

Lukas (Japanese: ルカ Luka) is a soldier appearing in Fire Emblem Gaiden and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. He is one of the nobles comprising the Deliverance, and goes to the village of Ram to request the help of General Mycen.

Fire Emblem Gaiden

Role

Lukas is one of the first recruited characters in Gaiden; he is also the first soldier to join Alm's group.

Lukas appears in Ram village and extends invitation to Alm to join the Deliverance after Mycen rejects the offer. This is Lukas' only story role and he has no further actions or dialogue for the rest of Gaiden.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Lukas starts as one of the strongest units, already having enough speed to double essentially all early game enemies, save for Mercenaries and the occasional boss, as well as enough defense to take little damage from enemy counterattacks. Lukas is perfect for setting up kills for the villagers to reach promotion level, and as long as he has food equipped he faces essentially no risk of death. After the villagers promote and become more competent units, Lukas can still fulfill his niche as a tank and safely weaken enemies for offensively limited units, i.e. Silque and any villager turned Archer, to secure kills and access their own promotions earlier. Using Lukas in this way practically guarantees that he will reach level 7 by the time you arrive at the Deliverance Hideout, at which point he can promote into a Knight and get enough defense and HP to become a near perfect tank against essentially all enemies in the finale of Act I.

Beyond Act 1, problems begin to arise for Lukas. The first is the increasing prevalence of magic users in Act 3 and beyond. Lukas' base 2 resistance means he will take significant damage from enemy magic users. His terrible 15% speed growth further hurts him in this regard, as while he usually has the speed to avoid being doubled by Arcanists due to their poor attack speed, Witches pose a significant threat, especially ones with Fire, but even Thunder Witches can potentially double him, and he will likely be doubled by most physical enemies after Act I. For this reason, the player should be mindful of Lances that weigh him down in case it makes the difference between him getting doubled or not. His poor speed also hurts his damage output significantly, and he will rarely one-round enemies besides Arcanists. His speed issues can be partially amended with speed springs, but many other units will want speed boosts as well, including Forsyth who shares a lot of Lukas's niches but has a better speed growth. His low movement does him no favors either, as it means that he will find it difficult to utilize his tanking abilities, though there are ways of alleviating this if needed (such as Warp). After a solid performance in Act I, Lukas is hampered by his poor speed and falls behind in general combat performance, stats, and utility.

Fortunately, Lukas does have one saving grace that allows him to be useful beyond Act I. In having perfect availability in Alm's route and being able to benefit from the strong promotion gains of the Knight class fairly quickly, Lukas is perhaps the best candidate for the Pitchfork, a free DLC item that allows him to reclass to a villager at the Thieves' Shrine and afterward reclass to a Mercenary. This promotion line raises Lukas' speed to a level that allows him to double enemies consistently. Moreover, when he becomes a Dread Fighter, he will get Apotrope to halve all magical damage in addition to getting seven movement, practically eliminating his weakness to magical users and witches. It is recommended to wait until he becomes a Knight until he does so, as the class's bases will allow him to be very powerful and durable.

Personality

In the original Gaiden, Lukas had little characterization or past aside from his status as a soldier in the Deliverance.

In Echoes: Shadows of Valentia his character as well as the Deliverance itself have been expanded. Lukas, as well as the leaders of the Deliverance, are Zofian nobility of varying rank. He is shown to have a very calm, reliable, and professional front, never losing his temper during dialogue. It is for this reason that he fears coming off as cold or detached. Despite feeling that this is unusual, he is still appreciated for his calm demeanor.[3]

Lukas: Sharp Soldier

Here's Lukas, a member of the Deliverance! He's a consummate professional who's as strict with himself as he is with others.

Lukas is an experienced soldier who has extensive knowledge of both offensive and defensive tactics. When Alm first joined the Deliverance, Lukas served as his mentor in the ways of warfare.

After Clive took the reins of the Deliverance, Lukas served as his advisor. I guess you could say that Lukas was the driving force behind the scenes all this time!

Eventually, even Lukas saw Alm as the true leader of the Deliverance. I guess that explains why he's so strict all the time—he really knows how to find people's strengths and draw them out!
