21 Laps Entertainment
21 Laps Entertainment (stylized onscreen as twenty-one laps entertainment) is the production company of Canadian-American filmmaker Shawn Levy, formed in 1999 and headquarted in New York City. It was formerly known as Wunjo, Inc. until 2005, where it signed a non-exclusive deal with 20th Century Fox to produce their films. The company derives its name from the number of laps Levy's oldest daughter ran in a jogathon when she was five years old. In November 2020, the company signed a first-look deal with Netflix for both film and television.[1]
Visuals: On a dark blue background, there is an aurora with a light. The logo zooms in quickly while the light glows into an abstract "21L". The result reads "21L", with "21" rotated 90 degrees left and a segment at the bottom of the "1" (which is supposed to represent a starting/finish line). Under it, there is the stacked company name in purple.
Technique: CGI animation.
Audio: Some whoosh-like sounds. The WB airings used a generic theme and voiceover.
-
In-credit variant
-
The Internship (2013): After the logo forms, it fades to the opening scene.
-
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014): The light in the middle of the logo flashes bright, and starts the opening scene. This was also the last movie to use the 2009 logo.
-
Arrival (2016): The logo is darker than usual.
-
Fist Fight (2017): The logo is white and blue on a black background as it zooms in slowly, like the other studio logos (Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Village Roadshow Pictures and RatPac).
-
Love and Monsters (2020): The logo is darker than usual again, different from Arrival.
-
The Adam Project (2022, Netflix): The camera pans down into space to start the movie. Also, once the camera pans down, the first notes of "Gimme Some Lovin'" by The Spencer Davis Group are heard.
-
Backrooms (2026): The logo is in a neon style on a black background, with the company name in a different font. This was designed by Filmograph.
Visuals: There is a bright orange flash, which appears to be the front end of a moving line of light, accompanied by five more lines. The screen then pans over to see them creating glowing pathways, emitting sparkles. Finally they create an abstract "21L" (same as the previous logo, but slightly thinner) and two lines collide in the very center, creating a flash. The name below appears in dark blue underneath. Dots of light float about in the background until the logo fades out.
Later Variant: Starting in 2016 with the first season of Stranger Things, the logo has been enhanced, with brighter colors, smoother animation, a horizontal bar (—) is changed to en dash (-), and the "21" is no longer rotated.
Other Variants:
- Shortened and still versions exist.
- On post-theatrical prints of Deadpool & Wolverine, the print logo scrolls up with the end credits.
Technique: CGI animation by Picturemill.
Audio: An uprising synth/orchestra tune with twinkling sounds and buzzing of the lines. This was composed by Christophe Beck.
Audio Variants:
- Sometimes, it is silent or the opening theme of the film is heard.
- An alternate version exists in which the fanfare is re-arranged and a cheering sound is heard when the logo flashes at the end.
