Starting stats and growth rates
- Stats with two figures separated by a ~ are presented as a range. The figures to the left of the ~ are taken from a Chapter 8 playthrough, the earliest possible point where this chapter may be undertaken in the Birthright and Conquest campaigns; the figures to the right of the ~ are taken from a Chapter 23 playthrough, the point where this boss hits level 20 and stops scaling from there.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Nichol is a prepromoted Malig Knight available to the player after being captured in Paralogue 5 and subsequently persuaded in prison. His level, stats, and weapon ranks are adjusted depending on when the paralogue is played. Nichol has no personal skill, as well as no other skills to start with on Normal and Hard, with just Wyvern Rider's starting skills on Lunatic. Strength +2 is useful given his limited skill pool, and Lunge has niche use cases for adjusting his position in battle. He will also gain the previously mentioned skills starting at levels 6 and 7, respectively, in either of his classes.
Due to his previously mentioned limited skill access without DLC, Nichol should learn every possible skill he can. From Malig Knight, he learns Savage Blow, which allows him to deal some area-of-effect damage to enemies near his target after combat, as well as Trample for 5 extra damage against non-mounted foes. His other class, Wyvern Lord, has him trade his tomes, magic, and resistance for lances and increases to all of his other growths aside from strength. Wvyern Lord's skills greatly benefit Nichol; Rally Defense allows him to improve the defense of all allies within 2 tiles of him, whereas Swordbreaker grants him +50 hit and avoid against foes wielding swords and katana, substantially improving his matchup against them.
Nichol's potential is not as great as that of story units, meaning he is best reserved as a unit that can fulfill a flying niche as needed. As the only default Malig Knight on Birthright, Nichol will perform better there than anywhere else; his only competition is Scarlet, and even then, they only compete if Nichol is reclassed to Wyvern Lord. On Conquest and Revelation, Nichol is strictly outclassed by Camilla thanks to her superior bases, growths, skill access, and longtime prospects. Still, he will perform adequately at worst and provides a free Malig Knight option, which still places him in a favorable light.

Trivia
- Nichol possesses a critical cut-in portrait, a trait shared with Candace, and lacked by other unplayable or capture-exclusive bosses. Additionally, his name is located among the names of characters that can exclusively marry Corrin,[2] suggesting he had a more significant role before becoming a paralogue boss. Nichol and Candace are also the only capturable bosses to be featured in the first Choose Your Legends event, with the others only being added in CYL 5.
