Paralogue
A paralogue (Japanese: 外伝 side-story) is a type of optional chapter which debuted in Fire Emblem Awakening. Typically, a paralogue must be unlocked by completing a certain chapter and, sometimes, reaching a specific character support's rank. Paralogues may contain recruitable characters or items not otherwise available in the game, and might also expand on the main plot of the game in different areas. In Awakening, Heroes, and non-Japanese versions of Fates, paralogues have their own numbering scheme not interspersed with that of the main chapters, being written as, for example, "Paralogue 2" in English and 外伝2 Side Story 2 in Japanese.

Fire Emblem Awakening
The US English version of Awakening refers to "Paralogues", while the European English version instead calls them "Side Stories". The structure of Paralogues is non-linear; once unlocked, they remain open for the rest of the game until the player completes them, and can be played at any time and in any order.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Paralogues return in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and are handled somewhat differently due to the game's different chapter structure; they are notably not numbered in any version of the game. Unlike in previous titles, paralogues in Three Houses can expire, becoming inaccessible after passing a certain chapter. In addition to the chapter requirements, paralogues have focus characters; accessing a paralogue in Part I requires that at least one of the paralogue's focus characters be recruited, while accessing a paralogue in Part II requires that every focus character be recruited; both parts require that neither character fell in battle after being recruited. Three paralogues have unique recruitment requirements: Tales of the Red Canyon and Eternal Guardian focus on unrecruitable characters and do not have a recruitment requirement; Dividing the World requires that Hilda be recruited to access it in Part I regardless of Cyril's recruitment, though his defeat will still disallow access to it.
In Maddening mode, some paralogues will have stronger enemies if they are attempted in any chapter after they are first available. For example, if War for the Weak is attempted during Chapter 6, its enemies and NPCs will be level 18 and its boss level 20; if it is attempted during Chapter 7 or any later chapter, its enemies and NPCs will be level 19 and its boss level 21.
Fire Emblem Engage
In Fire Emblem Engage, most paralogues are tied to the game's Emblem mechanic, increasing the maximum bond level with the respective Emblem from 10 to 20 and unlocking additional Engage skills and Engage weapons in the process. Additionally, two paralogues allow the player to recruit two additional units to their army. A fifteenth paralogue is required to obtain the Pact Ring, and thus the ability to obtain an S-rank support level with a unit.
Similar to Awakening, paralogues follow a non-linear structure, remaining open from the point they were unlocked until the end of the game. However, unlike previous games, all paralogues are unlocked through story progress, without any additional requirements. For the Emblems' paralogues, the chapter they become available corresponds to when they become available to the player (or, in the case of Emblems available before Chapter 10, the chapter the player gets them back). Base game paralogues do not scale in difficulty.
The Emblem's paralogues typically reference a map from the corresponding Emblem's original game (with the exception of Lyn's paralogue, which instead references a map from The Binding Blade), with enemies referencing important characters from the repective game. For these maps, the respective Emblem is unavailable to the player and needs to be defeated to complete the battle.
Additionally, six Divine Paralogues were added through downloadable content. They function similar to the Emblem paralogues in the base game, but unlike them, they are required to unlock the corresponding Emblem Bracelet. The Emblem of Rivals does not have a corresponding Divine Paralogue. The first Divine Paralogue becomes available after Chapter 6 has been completed, while all other Divine Paralogues become available upon its completion. Unlike basegame paralogues, Divine Paralogues scale in difficulty as the player progresses through the game, with enemies gaining higher stats and levels along with stronger weapons. Divine Paralogues can be replayed after being completed through recall battles.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
In Warriors: Three Hopes, paralogues focus on multiple characters. Only Shez and the focus characters can be deployed. Each paralogue will grant a battalion for S-Rank completion.

List of chapters in Fire Emblem Heroes § Paralogues
Like Awakening and Fates, paralogues do not take place between two main chapters, and can be played at any time. Like all chapters in Heroes, they can be replayed at any time.
Xenologues are a subcategory of paralogues. While paralogues in Heroes have three parts, xenologues have only one part.
