Studio Ponoc

Studio Ponoc (株式会社スタジオポノック, Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Ponokku) is a Japanese animation studio based in Musashino, Tokyo, Japan. It was founded by Yoshiaki Nishimura in April 15, 2015 with several animators formerly with Studio Ghibli. Its first feature film, Mary and the Witch's Flower, was released in 2017.

The studio name "Ponoc" is the Serbo-Croatian word for "midnight" ("pónoć"), which was chosen by producer Yoshiaki Nishimura to signify "the beginning of a new day".

Visuals: Each film features a different character in profile, but beneath that profile is the text "STUDIO PONOC", with the first O in PONOC having a red arrow pointing to the top like a clock.

Trivia: The logo itself of a film character's profile homages Ponoc's Studio Ghibli roots.

Variants: Each film uses a different variant:

• Mary and the Witch's Flower: The Studio Ponoc logo appears below on a white background that is styled like paper. Above this, there is a drawing of Mary Smith, the main character from the film. On the original Japanese prints of the film, text appears below the logo reading "スタジオポノック第一回長編作品" (Studio Ponoc's First Feature Film).
• Modest Heroes: Just the Studio Ponoc logo on the same paper-styled background
• The Imaginary: Similar to the first variant, but this time, the background is more white and the drawing now depicts Rudger, the main character of his film.

Technique: A hand-drawn illustraton with digital text graphics.

Audio: None or the opening theme to the movie.

Availability: It debuted on Mary and the Witch's Flower, and has made appearances on Modest Heroes, The Imaginary, and on the Olympic short film Tomorrow's Leaves as an in-credit logo.
