CIC Video

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

CIC Video was a home video distributor owned by Cinema International Corporation (CIC) and its successor United International Pictures (UIP), and operated in some countries by local operators. Outside of the United States and Canada, it distributed films by Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures, UIP's partners. DreamWorks Pictures films were added to the company's slate in 1998 (which were released through DreamWorks Home Entertainment), as the fledgling studio had a worldwide video distribution deal with Universal.

In 1999, CIC Video was dissolved when Universal pulled out in favor of its then-newly purchased PolyGram Filmed Entertainment's home video unit (PolyGram Video), which was then promptly renamed Universal Pictures Video. Paramount would retain CIC Video, which would also then be renamed as the international division of Paramount Home Entertainment. CIC Video’s Mexican division was renamed to Asociación Mexicana de Video.

1st Logo (January 1981-1986)

Visuals: The text "CIC" is seen in a fat abstract font, with the "S"-patterned chain link from the film logo cut-out on the bottom of the "I", and the word "VIDEO" shown below in a Eurostile Extended Bold font. The logo is entirely white and fades in over a cloudy blue (or purple) background.

Variants:

  • On early releases, the logo is thinner and lacks the chain.
  • The logo's size and the position of the chain seems to differ.
  • A variant exists, where the logo is on a printed card and the chain is also in the colors of its film counterpart.

Technique: Fading effects.

Audio: None.

2nd Logo (1983)

Visuals:

  • Opening: A glaring light in a bright pink hue is seen twitching slightly in the middle of the screen, briefly flashing a blue ring of light around it after a few seconds. Then, two candy-striped trails emerge from the light as it fades out, swooping forwards and filling with the same glaring light as the CIC Video logo, which is lacking the chain. The logo remains still for a few seconds before it flashes, causing a pink outline of the "CIC" text to fly upwards, followed by an orange outline. Afterwards, the print logos for Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures swoop down to the center of the screen as the logo fades out, remain still for a few seconds, and then zoom out as the trail section of the animation plays again. It then cuts to the beginning of the trailer reel.
  • Closing: The logo forms again starting with the trails, but the outlined text "HOLLYWOOD AT HOME" is seen in the center of the screen briefly before it fades out.

Technique: A mix of camera-controlled cel animation and computer effects.

Audio: The main theme of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, albeit with the pitch raised slightly. A male announcer can also be heard talking over it.

Availability: This logo is only known to have been used at the beginning and end of a trailer tape.

3rd Logo (1986-1994, 1999 in Malaysia)

Visuals: On a black-blue gradient background with stars dotted around it, the three pieces of the chain (the outer two in light blue and the center one in white) fly from the edges of the screen and form at the bottom center of the screen. A silver bar then flies in from the top of the screen, stopping were the chain is, and the two "C"s draw themselves in, starting from the bottom up to the top. All three letters are made of metal. "VIDEO" then flies in below, stopping under the CIC logo.

Variants:

  • On the UK, German, Australian, Brazilian and Argentine VHS releases, just before the logo settles in place, a bright flash engulfs the screen and dies down to reveal the print logo set against a light blue background.
    • Some releases have the logo zooming out to the top as a light blue marquee with white lines fades in below reading "GREAT FILMS", along with "from the Hollywood studios of PARAMOUNT & UNIVERSAL", which would lead into sneak previews of upcoming movies.
      • Another background variant of the above which has the logo zooming out to the top and then cutting to black also exists, which can be found on the 1986 UK VHS re-release of Woody Woodpecker and His Friends.
  • A still variant simply consisting of the logo in white on a light blue background is known to appear seen on some Japanese VHS, VCD and Laserdisc releases, as well as VHD releases (basically the country's version of CED).
  • One variant has the CIC Video logo (blue background version) "morph" into the 1986 Paramount logo (with a smaller Paramount Communications byline), which then morphs into the 1971 variant of the 1963 Universal logo. This can only be seen on some Brazilian VHS releases as the beginning of a promotional music video, celebrating 1,000,000 copies of CIC videotapes sold in Brazil.
    • A 1991 trailer VHS release has the common blue background variant flash into this particular variant. The 1986 Paramount logo also does not morph into the 1971 variant of the 1963 Universal logo.
  • At the end of the Spanish VHS release of Earthquake, an extended variant appears, where titles of movies scroll from bottom to top. After that, the logo starts playing, while the last piece of the text starts scrolling up. Once the logo finishes playing, the text "PARAMOUNT Y UNIVERSAL" stops scrolling and appears on top of the logo.
  • On an Italian promo, the logo is cropped, only leaving the CIC part of the logo playing.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: An ascending synth-choir note, ending with four synth notes that rise in pitch (sounding like "doo-doo-doo-doo") and a loud hit containing two more notes.

Availability: Seen on releases by CIC Video from 1986 until 1994.

  • This logo is seen on the original UK issues of The Naked Gun and Back to the Future Part II, among many others.
  • One VHS release that features the blue background variation is Police Squad: Volume One.
  • This logo may also come after a home video logo from that country (such as AVH in Argentina, HVH in Greece, and ITI in Poland).
  • The blue background variant with the marquee can be found on some VHS releases from the era, such as the original UK retail releases of Saturday Night Fever and Back to the Future, among others.
    • It can also be found on the Japanese Laserdisc releases of Back to the Future, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Ghost Dad, among others, although the "Great Films" byline hasn't been translated through subtitles.
  • Other releases to feature this logo include Back to the Future Part III, Ghost, Kindergarten Cop, Top Gun, Twins, The Naked Gun 2 1/2, Coming To America, The Godfather Part III, Beverly Hills Cop II, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Hunt for Red October, and Stepping Out, among others.
  • It was also spotted at the end on a late 1990s TNT airing of American Graffiti with the movie's end theme playing over.
  • It is also spotted at the beginning of a 1994 Brazilian VHS release of Dark Angel: The Ascent (1994), a Full Moon film released by Paramount, with the 6th logo appearing afterwards.
  • The version with the white flash is also seen on the 1988 UK VHS release of U2: Rattle and Hum and the 1991 UK VHS release of Jetsons: The Movie (1990).
  • This logo continued to be used in Iceland as late as 1997, having to appear on the VHS release from that nation of the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor.
  • The version without the white flash can also be found on the Malaysian VCD releases of Universal and Paramount titles released before 2000, such as The Blues Brothers, Kindergarten Cop, and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West!, among others.

4th Logo (1986-1992)

Visuals:

  • Opening: Starting out with the end of the previous logo's print logo variant, it zooms out onto a scrolling chrome filmstrip and settles into its respective space, slowly fading away as it scrolls off-screen. The filmstrip has three boxes in it. The left has the Paramount print logo (with the Gulf+Western byline) engraved in it, the middle box has the CIC Video logo in it, and the box on the right has the Universal print logo of the time (a wireframe globe inside a stylized U with "UNIVERSAL" below) in it. The filmstrip then shines, followed by the golden word "PREVIEW" scrolling in from the right. The word shines as the filmstrip begins to shine brightly, eventually engulfing the word and screen with white.
  • Closing: The white flash then recedes back into the filmstrip, revealing "PREVIEW" on a plain chrome filmstrip. The filmstrip then flips around to reveal the three logo boxes, as the CIC Video logo fades back to its original colors and then zooms in, engulfing the screen.

Technique: CGI.

Audio:

  • Opening: The music from the 3rd logo, then a deep bass sounder with a laser-like zap noise, and finally the "doo-doo-doo-doo" noise and the loud hit.
    • On Chilean VHS releases released by Video Chile, a voiceover is used.
  • Closing: The laser-like zap noise, with the deep bass sounder playing in the background, followed by an abridged version of the "doo-doo-doo-doo" noise and loud hit.

6th Logo (1991-1998)

Visuals: On a black-blue gradient background, cyan lights form up the "CIC" text, with the "C"s formed by wrapping in a spiral 4 times, while the "I" is formed by four lights dropping down one by one. Once the text is finished, "VIDEO" flips in via each letter individually flipping in and then a ping brings forth a white chain link, followed by a light blue one fading in, it splitting and arranging itself into the CIC chain link, and finally two pings quickly turning it into a proper link. Then one of the following things happens:

  • On Paramount movies, the logo zooms out to the left in a box against the same type of background. Then, in another box to the right, Paramount's 1986 logo animates.
  • On Universal movies, the logo zooms out to the right in a box against the same type of background. Then, in another box to the left, Universal's 1990 logo animates.
  • On Australian releases, the logo zooms up to the top, and two boxes play the Paramount and Universal logos below it, and then the animation essentially reverses.
    • The tail end of this variant (starting where the boxes with the logos fade out while the CIC Video logo sits on the center of the camera) was also seen on another Brazilian music video from 1991, this time celebrating 2,000,000 tapes sold.

Variants:

  • On some Czech VHS releases, the logo lacks the end animations, making it shorter.
  • One variant seen on a promo tape for The Naked Gun 2 1/2 has the word "NEWS" also appears below "VIDEO". This variant uses a generic uplifting orchestral piece, which is part of the promo's soundtrack.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A peaceful synth-orchestra tune.

Audio Variant: On some VHS releases, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation : Volume 22, the tune is higher in tone.

Availability: Seen on many PAL VHS releases in the UK (until 1993) and Australia.

  • Titles include The Nutty Professor, True Lies (Universal had the rights to the film internationally at that time), The Naked Gun 33 1/3, Forrest Gump, Clueless and Jurassic Park, among others.
  • The Universal/Paramount variant can also be found on the Australian VHS release of Tom & Jerry: The Movie, despite being licensed from Turner Pictures Worldwide (whose titles are currently owned by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment).
  • This logo also makes an appearance on the Chinese VCD release of The Jackal instead of the next logo.
  • This logo also makes appearances on the MTE and Universal Televsion productions, such as In the Company of Darkness, Problem Child 3: Junior in Love and Sliders, all of which were released on VHS in select international territories.

7th Logo (January 13, 1997-July 12, 1999)

Visuals: On a blue-purple aurora background, the CIC logo, now colored in light blue and lacking the chain, flips in and zooms towards the camera. The logo also starts off transparent, but glows more opaque and then shines once, revealing the chain engraved onto it. As it straightens out, the chain flashes and two beams of light wipe in "WELCOME" below, starting off white before fading to blue. The logo then zooms in slightly before the "I" glows white and the entire thing rotates 90 degrees towards the camera, engulfing the screen with white.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A peaceful chord-like tune accompanied by a choir and a button like sound when "WELCOME" is wiped in, followed by a whoosh sound.

1st Bumper (1982-1986)

Visuals: On a blue background, there is the italic text: "LOOK OUT FOR THESE GREAT TITLES FROM", and below it is the CIC Video logo.

Variants:

  • An earlier variant exists ,which has no chain on the "I" and thinner text.
  • A variant exists for horror films, with a light blue background and the words, "Look out for these great Horror Films from the studios of Paramount and Universal, brought to you by CIC Video..." in a white Times New Roman-like font.
  • The original pre-cert release of An Officer and a Gentleman features the text, "See RICHARD GERE in these two great films also available from CIC Video" placed above the company logo.
  • Another variant exists on early Australian tapes, which merely says "A PREVIEW OF ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE."
    • Other times, on either Rigby-CIC, or CIC-Taft Video releases, the bumper reads, "PRESENTS A PREVIEW OF ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE COMING SOON" or "PRESENTS A PREVIEW OF OTHER GREAT MOVIES".

Technique: Digital graphics.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases from 1982 until 1986, mostly VHS releases that have the first logo.

  • The horror variant can be seen on John Carpenter's The Thing.
  • The "A PREVIEW OF ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE" variant can be found on Australian Rigby-CIC/CIC-Taft VHS releases, such as Bustin' Loose and Urban Cowboy.
  • The 1986 CIC-Taft Video release of Best Defense also has the "A PREVIEW OF OTHER GREAT MOVIES" variant precede only one trailer, for Rustlers' Rhapsody, while it's the other way around on the 1985 VHS release of Thief of Hearts (the "A PREVIEW OF ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE" variant precedes trailers for Shogun and The Wild Life).

Visuals: A still shot of the CIC Video "Great Films" bumper with the words "COMING SOON" on the marquee.

Technique: Digital graphics.

3rd Bumper (1986-1992)

Visuals:

  • Opening: The 2nd CIC Video logo forms and transforms white-on-blue with a "flash". Then, it zooms out onto the scrolling filmstrip and "dissolves" into its respective space. The filmstrip has three boxes in it. The left has an engraved Paramount logo (Gulf+Western) in it, the middle box has an engraved CIC Video logo in it, and the box on the right has an engraved Universal logo in it (a wireframe globe inside a stylized U with "UNIVERSAL" below). then the word "PREVIEW" in gold with a big "V" scrolling past. The screen is then taken up by a white flash. On Chilean VHS releases released by Video Chile, a Chilean Spanish voiceover is also used.
  • Closing: It starts off with the white flash disappearing, and then flips back to the chrome filmstrip with three boxes in it. Suddenly, the CIC Video logo turns full color (that is, blue and white) and then zooms up, taking up the entire screen.

Technique: Digital graphics.

Audio:

  • Opening: The music from the logo, then a deep bass sounder with a laser-like zap noise, and finally the 'doo-doo-doo-doo' noise and the loud hit.
  • Closing: The laser-like zap noise, with the deep bass sounder playing in the background, followed by an abridged version of the 'doo-doo-doo-doo' noise and loud hit.

4th Bumper (Australia only) (1989-1991)

Visuals: On the black-dark blue gradient starfield background as seen on the CIC Video warning scroll, there is the text "Watch for the following movie at a theater near you."

Variant: On the 1991 Australian VHS release of King Ralph, the text instead reads "WATCH OUT FOR THIS MOVIE AT A THEATER NEAR YOU." It then fades out, and a "PG" rating symbol fades in. This appears at the start of the tape, before a trailer for Shout.

Technique: Digital graphics.

Audio: None.

Availability: The first variant debuted on the Australian VHS of Twins, between the end of the movie and a trailer for Uncle Buck.

5th Bumper (1992-1997)

Visuals: On a black-blue gradient background:

  • Coming to Cinemas (1991 only): There are the words, "COMING TO A CINEMA NEAR YOU", in a Times font, fade in and fade out.
  • Coming to Video (1991 only): There is the words, "COMING SOON FROM", in a Times font, fade in. After a second, the CIC Video logo (in the style of 1991-1997 logo) animates below them.
  • Cinema Releases (1991-97): There are an audience at the bottom with blue curtains at the front of the audience and a spotlight at the left side of the screen projecting a film on the curtains. The light dims as the words "CINEMA RELEASES" (for UK releases) or "FUTURE CINEMA RELEASES" (for Australian releases) appear on the screen and the curtains draw back.
  • Future Video Releases (1991-2005): There is a VCR. A spotlight shines on it, and it zooms right through it, revealing several blue-tinted crossfading shots of the inner mechanics of the VCR. After a few seconds, the shiny chrome text "FUTURE VIDEO RELEASES" flies out from behind a spool and settles in the middle. The background fades to blue while the text remains.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio:

  • Coming to Cinemas: None.
  • Coming to Video: The music from the 1991 CIC Video logo, beginning from about 1/3 into the music.
  • Cinema Releases: A much calmer version of the 1991 CIC Video logo music.
  • Future Video Releases: A tribal drum tune and a single long synth note, ending with a "BOOM".

Availability: So far, the "Coming to Cinemas/Video" variant is seldom seen, having appeared on the rental tapes of The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear and He Said, She Said, likely the first CIC Video rental releases to debut the 1991 logo. This possibly appears on other CIC tapes from the era as well. The "Cinema Releases" and "Future Video Releases" variants were used mainly on CIC Video tapes from late 1991-early 1997 available in the UK, such as Child's Play 3 and Drop Zone. It also appeared on Australian CIC tapes until 1999, and Paramount VHS releases until 2005, such as The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, Twister, Mercury Rising, In the Name of the Father, The Sum of All Fears, Jackass: The Movie, and Sahara.

6th Bumper (1997-1999)

Visuals: On the same aurora background from the 1997 CIC Video logo, except it is darker, a few aqua-colored crescent-like C's and spotlights appear. A teal CIC logo flying through the C's, and reveal the bumper text in an object:

  • COMING SOON (with cinematic spotlights, in gold color)
  • CINEMA RELEASES (with cinematic spotlights, in teal color)
  • AVAILABLE TO BUY (in white 3-D letters)
  • RENTAL RELEASES (also in white 3-D letters)
  • FEATURE PRESENTATION (inside an aperture center)

Then, the camera pans up, leading to the aperture with the CIC logo, except for the "FEATURE PRESENTATION" one, leading up to the start of the trailer, or on the "Feature Presentation" bumper, the period BBFC film classification symbol (which varies by film) on the same background as CIC's period warning.

Variants:

  • When there's in between trailers, the aperture with the CIC logo closing, then re-opening.
  • On the UK VHS releases with the behind-the-scenes featurettes, it takes place on the same background as the CIC Video logo, and the words "BEHIND THE SCENES" flipping in, and then it flashes to white.
  • The "FEATURE PRESENTATION" bumper has more crescent C's and the CIC logo bumps into them while flying, creating sparks. On some releases, as well as Australian VHS releases, the flash at the end of the bumper fades to black.
  • Early DreamWorks UK VHS releases, such as the retail version of The Peacemaker, just use a version where it shows the camera going through the C's, then "NOW AVAILABLE ON VIDEOCASSETTE", "CINEMA RELEASE" or "DREAMWORKS FEATURE PRESENTATION" flies in, before zooming close into the camera.
  • On the 1999 UK VHS release of The Italian Job, a special bumper is used, with a curtain background and text reading "THE ITALIAN JOB THEATRICAL TRAILER."

Technique: CGI effects.

Audio:

  • Available to Buy/Rental Releases/Behind The Scenes: A quick electronica tune with a low whoosh sound, a brief bump sound when the CIC logo flies through the bumper, and then a whoosh sound.
  • In between trailers: Two whoosh sounds.
  • Cinema Releases/Coming Soon: A quick electronica tune with a choir as the words appear, a metallic "clang" sound and then a whoosh sound.
  • Feature Presentation: A quick electronica tune with a few crash sounds when the CIC logo bumps into the crescent C's, an ascending whistle-like sound, and then a whoosh sound.

Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases during the era, such as:

    • Paramount Pictures: In and Out, The Education of Little Tree, Sliding Doors, Primal Force, Twilight, The Rainmaker, Daria titles, The Education of Little Tree, Beavis & Butthead titles, Good Burger, Rugrats titles, the first three Indiana Jones movies, Mission Impossible, Event Horizon, Saving Private Ryan, Sliding Doors, Til There Was You, Kiss The Girls and Harriet the Spy.
    • Universal Pictures (Including DreamWorks Home Entertainment): The Land Before Time VI, Dragonheart, Twister, The Frighteners, Daylight, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, A Simple Wish, An American Tail III: The Treasure of Manhattan Island, The Nutty Professor, Mercury Rising, Primary Colors, Liar Liar, The Chamber, Bulletproof, Small Soldiers (the last CIC Universal VHS release), The Peacemaker, Amistad, Mousehunt and Deep Impact (rental only).
  • The DreamWorks variants do not appear on the original VHS releases of Antz, Deep Impact (retail only), The Prince of Egypt and In Dreams (the last DreamWorks CIC title); they instead use variations of the North American bumpers.
    • However after Universal's UK branch changed distributors to PolyGram Video, Paramount replaced this bumper with a new bumper, which is on the same background as CIC's warning.

Germany

1st Bumper (1991?-1998?)

The first pattern of cut out on it scrolls up, as another strip with the same design, but purple, horizontal, and with the word "VIDEO" cut out on it, slides in, settling in the center. The screen then flashes, making the word "auf" ("on") in a cursive font appear above "VIDEO", which becomes colored.

  • Also Available: The word " AUCH" ("ALSO" in German) appears, "VIDEO" is filled in with white and the vertical strip is in pale blue.
  • Coming Soon: The word "DEMNÄCHST" ("COMING") appears, "VIDEO" fills in with pale blue and the vertical strip is in yellow.

Edit Section

Europe, Oceania and Southeast Asia

United Kingdom, Australia and Southeast Asia

1st Screen (January 1981-1989)

Visuals: On a powder blue background, the word "WARNING" in a large white font appears at the top, and the CIC Video logo does so at the bottom. Between them, the following white text scrolling upward, which reads "The copyright proprietor has licensed the film (including its soundtrack) comprised in this videocassette for home use only. All other rights are reserved. Any unauthorised copying, editing, exhibition, renting, exchanging, hiring, lending, public performances, diffusion, and/or broadcast of this videocassette or any part thereof is strictly prohibited."

Variants:

  • An early version exists where the background is bright blue, the text does not scroll, and the chain in the "I" in the CIC Video logo is removed. This was used until 1983.
  • Another variant exists, where the background is dark blue, with the text, again, not scrolling and the chain in the "I" in the CIC Video logo intact. This was used from 1983-86.
  • In the 1987 variant of the 1986 UK warning, "Not for sale or hire in Australia or New Zealand." is added to the end.
  • On Australian VHS releases, different warning text scrolls up with the word "WARNING", the CIC Video logo does not appear, the fonts may vary (depending on the tape), and after the warning text finishes scrolling, either the CIC Video logo or the Merlin Video logo appears. Also, on THG Video releases, the THG Video logo fades to the warning screen. Initially, the text is also in a Helvetica font, but it was later changed to a more futuristic font, before settling on a Courier New-like font, and eventually, a plain Times-like font.
  • Laserdisc releases have "videocassette" replaced by "videodisc". This was only used in the early 1980s, though.

Technique: Computer effects.

Audio: None. However, on very rare occasions, the music from the 1978-1982 MCA DiscoVision logo plays, either normal or high-pitched, likely due to the conversion to PAL for the latter. On some Australian VHS releases from Rigby-CIC Video or CIC-Taft Video, a male voiceover can be heard, reading the text.

Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases from the era, such as:

  • Paramount Pictures: Some Kind of Wonderful, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Heartburn, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Best Defense.
  • Universal Pictures: Bustin' Loose, Legal Eagles, The Thing, Silent Running, Scarface.

2nd Screen (1988-1994)

Visuals: A black-dark blue gradient starfield background fades in (or sometimes cuts). After two seconds, the word "WARNING" (in Helvetica) fades in at the top in white. Below it, the generic warning text (also in white) scrolls upward:

THE COPYRIGHT PROPRIETOR HAS

LICENSED THE FILM

COMPRISED IN THIS VIDEOCASSETTE

FOR HOME USE ONLY.

ALL OTHER RIGHTS ARE RESERVED.

THE DEFINITION OF HOME USE EXCLUDES

PART THEREOF IS

AND ANY SUCH ACTION ESTABLISHES

LIABILITY FOR A CIVIL ACTION

AND MAY GIVE RISE TO

CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

NOT FOR SALE OR HIRE

IN AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND.

Then it would segue to the era's CIC Video logo after the word "WARNING" fades out.

Variants:

  • On Australian releases, different warning text scrolls up with the word "WARNING". Later releases have a different font.
  • On Southeast Asian releases, "NOT FOR SALE OR HIRE IN AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND." is absent.

Technique: Computer effects.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases from the era, such as:

  • Paramount Pictures: The Untouchables, Shooter, The Hunt for Red October, Eddie Murphy: Raw, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Scrooged.
  • Universal Pictures: An American Tail, Out of Africa, Twins, Back to the Future Part III, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, The Land Before Time, Dragnet.

3rd Screen (1991-2002)

Visuals:

  • Opening: On a black/blue gradient background is this warning text in Times New Roman:

WARNING

The copyright owner has licensed
this video recording for home use
only. All other rights are reserved.

For further details please refer to
the end of the programme.

  • Closing: Over the same background, the warning text is longer and it scrolls upward, reading:

WARNING

The copyright owner has
licensed the film (including
it's soundtrack) recorded on
this video recording for home
use only. All other rights
are reserved.

The definition of home use
excludes the use of this video
recording at locations such as
clubs, coaches, hospitals,
hotels, oil rigs, prisons and
schools.

Any unauthorised copying,

kinds of trading, public
performance or transmission
by air, cable or otherwise of
this vide recording or any
part thereof is strictly
prohibited and any such action
establishes liability for civil
action and may give rise to
criminal prosecution.

Not for sale or hire in
Australia/New Zealand.

When it finishes scrolling upwards, it fades to black.

Variants:

  • Post-1994 releases have the font of the text changed to Helvetica.
    • At the end of 1994-97 releases, the warning text is changed to the aforementioned font and it is also made smaller.
  • On Australian releases, "WARNING" is sometimes not underlined, and it also has the different warning text.
  • Before 1994, the warning would segue to the era's CIC Video logo.

Technique: A still computerized graphic in the regular version, 2D computer animation in the alternate variant.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases from the era, such as:

  • Paramount Pictures: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation episodes, The Firm, early releases of Rugrats and Beavis and Butt-Head, Flight of the Intruder, Paternity, Forrest Gump, Drop Zone, Nick of Time.
  • Universal Pictures: Jurassic Park, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, Balto, The Flintstones, Waterworld, Casper, The Little Rascals, Beethoven, Beethoven's 2nd, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Cape Fear.

4th Screen (1997-2002)

Visuals:

  • Opening: On the same aurora background as the era's CIC Video logo is the underlined word "WARNING" and the same text from the previous screen in a white Russell Square Regular font. Behind the text is the faded CIC logo. The pattern in the aurora waves move in the background.
  • Closing: Against the same background with the faded CIC logo, the same longer set of warning text from the previous screens scrolls up. When the text is finished scrolling upward, the background stays on for two additional seconds before the warning fades out.

Variants:

  • On early DreamWorks Home Entertainment releases, which were technically under the CIC label, the faded CIC logo is removed and the text also has darker shadows. Additionally, the aurora background animation also has a noticeably different time loop.
    • When Paramount rebranded CIC as Paramount Home Entertainment UK and began self-releasing their titles following Universal's decision to pull out, the faded CIC logo is now permanently removed.
  • At the end of early DreamWorks Home Entertainment releases, the same longer set of warning text scrolls up as before, but scaled slightly, has minor spelling and grammar, and before the last paragraph of the warning text finishes scrolling upward, the background fades out early with it slightly. This was likely used as a prototype version.
  • At the end of later DreamWorks Home Entertainment releases and all Paramount Home Entertainment releases since the split, the typos and grammar (see "Editor's Note") are fixed and it finishes scrolling upwards before the background fades out.
  • On timecoded VHS releases, the opening screen starts off as the faded CIC zooms in to the center of the viewer's screen (in style of the 1996-1999 logo). Then, different warning text scrolls up in a Univers Condensed font.
    • On a timecoded VHS release of Snow Day, the text is in a different font and Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) is mentioned instead of CIC. Also, the faded CIC logo is permanently removed and the background animation is at a shorter time loop.

Technique: Computer effects.

Audio: None.

Availability:

  • Paramount Pictures: In and Out, The Education of Little Tree, Sliding Doors, Primal Force, Twilight, The Rainmaker, Daria titles, Star Trek: Voyager titles, Beavis & Butthead titles, Diagnosis: Murder titles, Good Burger, Rugrats titles, the first three Indiana Jones movies, Mission Impossible, Event Horizon, Saving Private Ryan, The Indian In the Cupboard, Sliding Doors, Til There Was You, Kiss The Girls and Harriet the Spy.
  • Universal Pictures (until 1999): The Land Before Time VI, Dragonheart, Twister, The Frighteners, Daylight, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, A Simple Wish, An American Tail III: The Treasure of Manhattan Island, The Nutty Professor, Mercury Rising, Primary Colors, Liar Liar, The Chamber and Small Soldiers (the last CIC-Universal title).
  • DreamWorks Home Entertainment (until 1999): The Peacemaker, Amistad, Antz, Mousehunt, Deep Impact, The Prince of Egypt and In Dreams (the last CIC-DreamWorks title).
  • The closing variant appears at the start of the 1998 Saudi Arabian VHS of Top Gun.
