The Federal Bureau of Investigation, or simply known as FBI, is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States and its principal federal law enforcement agency. An agency of the United States Department of Justice, the FBI is a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community and reports to both the attorney general and the director of national intelligence. A leading American counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal investigative organization, the FBI has jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crimes. The FBI maintains a list of its top ten most wanted fugitives.

1978-1984: "Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or exhibition of copyrighted motion pictures and video tapes. Criminal copyright infringement is investigated by the FBI and may constitute a felony with a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine." Here, the text is in a somewhat more modern-looking font and is properly centered.

Variants:

A black and white version is seen on classic films and shorts in black & white.
On Hanna-Barbera Home Video releases, the red background is much brighter.
On 1990s Worldvision Home Video releases, the drop shadow for the text is omitted, the font is different, and the background has a brownish tint.
There was also a variant with a black background spotted on the 1978 Magnetic release of The Sad Sack, the 1984 Embassy release of The Howling, and the 1983 Embassy release of Blade Runner.
Early Magnetic/20th Century-Fox/CBS-Fox videodiscs between 1981 and 1984 use a variant of this logo that removes "video tapes" and replaces it with "video discs", using a font similar to the 1984-1999 version of the warning.
On the original release of Blackadder's Christmas Carol, the red background is brighter.
On late 1988-mid 1990 prints of CBS/Fox Video releases (before they started printing their tapes at Rank Video Services America), during this screen, a still version of the 1984 CBS/Fox Video logo appears a couple of times, staying on the screen for about five seconds before cutting back to the warning. Usually, it goes warning, logo still, warning, logo still, warning, logo still; however, the full version, as seen on pressings of Broadcast News and Carousel, goes logo still, warning, logo still, warning, logo still, warning, logo still, warning, logo still.
On the 1988 VHS release of Wee Willie Winkle the background is blue instead of the black and white.
On certain Video Treasures releases, the background is composed of the gray Video Treasures logo wallpaper shown in the second Video Treasures logo.
On the 1995 US VHS of The Pagemaster, the warning appears onscreen for six seconds before cutting to black.
On Canadian releases from 1980-1999, instead of the warning, the INTERPOL warning scrolls up twice, once in English and French. Most other companies continued using the warning until 2003.
On the 1991 Canadian VHS of Home Alone, the text does not scroll up.
On DVDs from 1998-2003 and on VHS releases from 1999-2003, it cuts to the white word "ATTENTION" and the INTERPOL warning text below it, on the same background.
Starting in November 3, 1998 on DVDs and 1999 on VHS, a FOX name pattern is shown over the background.
On all Canadian VHS releases (before sometime in 2003) and all DVDs since December 2004, only the second screen is shown, and on Canadian releases, the warning text on the second screen changes to French.
On Spanish-language VHS releases, the FBI warning screen appears in English as usual, only to cut to a Spanish translation ("AVISO DEL FBI") several seconds later.
D-VHS cassettes uses this warning in the same aspect ratio as the feature presentation, and "FBI" is the same size as "WARNING". Additionally, "FBI WARNING" is centered, and the FBI seal is removed.
On Key DVD releases, the background is orange with a Key Video print logo pattern. The FBI seal is removed, and the text is aligned to the center. Also, on the second screen, the word "ATTENTION" is replaced by "INTERPOL WARNING".
On the 1999 special edition VHS of There's Something About Mary as well as the 1999 VHS of Office Space, the warning screen appears at the beginning rather than the end. This may be because these were the last tapes to contain this warning before the company transitioned to the second warning. The warning is also cut short.
On VHS releases from 1999-2004 the first screen is only shown.

Audio Variants:

On the 1982 VHS/Betamax of Star Wars and the 1995 VHS of The Empire Strikes Back, the closing theme fades as the warning fades in.
On the 1982 VHS of Hello, Dolly! and the 1983 VHS/Laserdisc of My Fair Lady, the closing music finishes over the warning.
On the 1987 VHS of Jumpin' Jack Flash, the last few seconds of audio from the movie play during the warning.
On the 1993 FoxVideo VHS/Betamax/Laserdisc release of Shock Treatment (but not on the original 1982 20th Century Fox Video VHS/Betamax/Laserdisc release), the title song plays over the warning, and ends just as the warning fades.
On the 2000 DVD of X-Men, static sounds are heard when the warning reappears, leading to the DVD menu.
On the 2000 DVD of Fight Club, an electricity sound is heard when an additional third warning screen turns off.
Descriptive Video Service VHS tapes feature some, all or the majority of the warning text being read by a narrator. Examples are Margot Stage on Home Alone, Peter Haydu on Speed, Independence Day, Alien, True Lies and The Sound of Music, Wendie Sakakeeny on Rookie of the Year, Frances Kelley on Miracle on 34th Street, Chloe Leaman on Mrs. Doubtfire, Kim Mai-Guest on Cheaper by the Dozen (2004), Miles Neff on X-Men, and Rena Baskin on Cocoon and The Full Monty.

2nd Screen (November 1979-May 29, 2007)

Visuals: On a black background, there is a box which contains a black square on the left and a white square on the right. In the black square, it contains the standard FBI symbol in white and the "FBI" text in a white Univers Condensed font. In a white square on the right, it contains a red piece of red Helvetica Bold Condensed text reading "WARNING" and another piece of text either reading the "Title 17" info or "$250,000 fine" info.

Variants:

Throughout the screen's lifespan, several text fonts were used.
Some screens can sometimes either have the FBI seal with color or the white square with a rounded right side.
- Sometimes, the white square is a black color and the "WARNING" text and the warning info in a white color.
PolyGram Video releases have the black square a red color.
- PBS Home Video and HBO Video releases have the red square more smaller with the FBI symbol being colored.
On assorted tapes from 1981-1986, the whole thing is on a white background.
- Turner Home Entertainment releases uses a smaller black square and the "WARNING" text is joined with the warning info.
- Manga Entertainment releases has the black square and the warning text swapped places.
There is also a version where the whole thing is on a blue background.
- On 1980-1983 Walt Disney Home Video releases, the "WARNING" text is in a yellow color and is above the black square and the warning info. This also follows another piece of text on a blue background reading "Licensed for private home exhibition only. Any public performance, copying or other use is strictly prohibited. All other rights reserved.
  - A variant exists where the screens are shown in the opposite order.
  - Canadian releases have the second screen replacing the FBI screen and another screen is shown reading "Duplication in whole or in part of this videocassette is prohibited."
    - French-Canadian releases from Quebec use the variation but is translated into French.
- Some release has the black box a white color.
  - DEJ Productions uses a smaller box and the warning info now reads "Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution or exhibition of copyrighted motion pictures, video tapes or video discs." This follows to another screen which reads "WARNING" and "This videocassette is for private home viewing only. It is not licensed for any other use. Any public performance, copying or other use is strictly prohibited."
  - Some releases have the black box and text in a white color and the FBI seal in blue. This also follows an interpol reading with two piece of text reading "WARNING" and "International agreement and national laws protect motion pictures, videotapes and sound recordings. Unauthorized reproduction, exhibition or distribution of copyrighted motion pictures can result in severe criminal and civil penalties under the laws of your country. The International Criminal Police Organization - INTERPOL has expressed its concern about motion picture and sound recording piracy to all of its member national police forces. (REsolution adopted at INTERPOL General Assembly, Stockholm, Sweden, September 8, 1977.)"
    - New Star Video Movies releases used a maroon color for the background.
    - Monarch Home Video releases only show the first screen.
  - Super Video Inc. releases has the white square and the white text a lot smaller, and the FBI seal is removed.
- Some release have the black box surrounded by a white border.
  - Cannon Video releases have the word "WARNING" outside the white border.
- Studio Entertainment releases uses a blue-black gradient and the "FBI" text, the FBI symbol and the warning info is in a yellow color.
- E Realbiz releases uses a graphic design for the warning.
  - Some releases sometimes have the colors inverted.
There is also a version where the whole thing is on a red background.
- On 1983-1984 Walt Disney Home Video releases, the "WARNING" text is grey.
- Columbia Pictures Home Entertainment releases uses an additional screen before the FBI warning screen where a piece of text is on a blue background and is seen scrolling up which reads "THESE FILMS ARE SOLD FOR HOME USE ONLY. ANY DUPLICATION, REPRODUCTION, PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, OR COMMERCIAL USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED."
Embassy Home Entertainment releases used a version on a purple background, with "WARNING!" having an exclamation mark and sandwiched between two paragraphs.

Audio Variants:

On all three Bugs Bunny's Animal Kingdom videos, the soundscape of wind and birds fades in a second after the warning appears as it leads into the series' promo.
On the 1980 VHS/Betamax release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the closing theme of the Special Edition plays over the last two screens, with the music ending after the end of the second warning screen. When the film was issued on Laserdisc in 1981 by CPHE, the same warnings were used, but came after the closing theme had ended. The 1980 release can be indicated by the appearance of the print version of the Columbia Pictures Starburst.
On the 1979 VHS release of Shamus, the Columbia Pictures logo music (along with the beeps during the countdown of the slate that comes before it) plays faintly over the last two screens.
On Descriptive Video Service tapes, a DVS narrator reads out the warning. Depending on the film, a different narrator is used.

Variants:

On a few early RCA/Columbia releases from between 1986 and 1987, the background portion with "FBI" and the FBI logo is orchid-colored.
There is an early version of this warning, which has a bit bigger text and a little bit of space between the "WARNING" and the text.
There is a variant where the words are in a different font.
1997 widescreen DVDs use the 1987 version of the warning with blue borders at the left and right ends of the frame.
On DVDs starting with widescreen releases from June 1997 and widescreen sides of DVDs, the top blue part is larger, the font used is Frutiger Bold, and "FBI" and the seal is larger as well. The seal is also now in color and is slightly spaced away from "FBI". Full-screen DVDs began using this version in 1998; before that, the 1987 version was used on such DVDs.
In 2002, the VHS FBI logo was replaced with a colored version. It is similar to the aforementioned DVD variant, but the top blue part is a bit darker and the font is bolder.
On the 1998 VHS of Godzilla (1998) and the 1999 VHS of Big Daddy, the warning screen's duration is slightly more than one second.
A black and white variant of this warning exists.
DEJ Productions releases uses a marbled background.

On the 1993 VHS of The Bride, the very end of the 1993 CTHV logo's music echoes into the start of the warning.
On the 2002 DVS VHS of Spider-Man, Miles Neff says "An FBI warning" and immediately goes into the warning text, leaving out "...video tapes and video discs." and finishing it over the modified screen.
On Baby Bumblebee releases, a female announcer says "Please stay tuned after the program for information about other releases available from Baby Bumblebee."

Unbreakable (2001): After a few seconds, a light is seen shattering the warning screen with pieces flying away to a black background.

1984-1991: Similar to the 1979 screen except the screen is on a white background, the black box is now red and is the same height as the screen itself, and the white text is now red and reads "WARNING" and "FEDERAL LAW PROVIDES SEVERE CIVIL AND CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR THE UNAUTHORIZED REPRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION OR EXHIBITION OF COPYRIGHTED MOTION PICTURES, VIDEO TAPES, OR VIDEO DISCS. CRIMINAL COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI AND MAY CONSTITUTE A FELONY WITH A MAXIMUM PENALTY OF UP TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON AND/OR A $250,000 FINE." 2000-2022: The background is now in a navy blue color and the second screen and the duplication screen are merged together and reads "This [video format] is for private home viewing only. It is not authorized for any other use. Duplication in whole or in part of this [video format] is prohibited. All other rights reserved."

Variants:

Throughout the screen's lifespan, several text fonts were used.
On Canadian releases only, there is a variant in which a text fades into a duplication notice with reads "DUPLICATION IN WHOLE OR IN PART OF THIS VIDEOCASSETTE IS PROHIBITED." This has been used until 2000 where it was merged with the second screen.
An early prototype version exists for the 1984 screen where the text says "MOTION PICTURES AND VIDEO TAPES ARE PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHTS ISSUED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT. FBI INVESTIGATES ALLEGATIONS OF COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT DONE WILLFULLY AND FOR PROFIT. CONVICTION MAY RESULT IN FINE UP TO $1,000 AND/OR IMPRISONMENT UP TO ONE YEAR. TITLE 17, UNITED STATES CODE, SECTION 104. CIVIL DAMAGES UP TO $5,000 MAY ALSO RESULT (TITLE 17, U.S. CODE, SECTION 101)."
Walt Disney World videos had a grey background on the first 1984 screen, the warning text beside the FBI symbol is black instead of the usual red and the text reading "ANY PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, COPYING OR OTHER USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED." is included on both screens.
On Disney Educational Productions releases, the 1984 screen uses a lavender-prawn gradient and the second screen now reeds "WARNING: LICENSED FOR FACE TO FACE INSTRUCTIONAL USE ONLY. AS AUTHORIZED BY A WRITTEN LICENSE AGREEMENT. ALL OTHER RIGHTS RESERVED. ANY COPYING, OR THE PERFORMANCE, OR OTHER USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. THIS VIDEO CASSETTE IS THE PROPERTY OF DISNEY EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTIONS."
A few language versions exist in both Spanish and French.
- The 1984 Spanish screen uses the same shape and format from the 1985 screen.
- The 1985 Spanish screen has square edges.
Later versions of the 1991 screen use a different piece of text for the second screen which reads "THIS [video format] IS FOR PRIVATE HOME VIEWING ONLY. IT IS NOT LICENSED FOR ANY OTHER USE. ANY PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, COPYING OR OTHER USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. ALL OTHER RIGHTS RESERVED."
On Feature Films for Families releases, the logo, minus the text, is seen behind the second screen and the duplication screen text.
Starting in mid-2003, the text for the second 2000 screen was expanded where it now reads "This product (including its soundtrack) is authorized for private use only. All other rights are reserved. Unless expressly authorized by law or in writing by the copyright owner, any copying, public performance or other use of this product or any part of it is strictly prohibited. This product is not to be exported, re-supplied or distributed by way of trade without authorization from the copyright owner. Unauthorized reproduction, exhibition or distribution may result in severe criminal and civil penalties."
U.S. DVD releases from Sanctuary Visual Entertainment, such as Meat Loaf: Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, have the warning screens stretched to 16:9.
Some releases, including those from Preschool Prep Company, has the FBI seal removed.

On Disney's August/September 1986 demo tape for video dealers, audio of Little Richard performing "Great Gosh A'Mighty" (from Down and Out in Beverly Hills) begins to play over the second screen and continues into the start of the preview segments.
On the Shout About series, a rock tune is heard.
On Descriptive Video Service tapes, a DVS narrator reads out the warning. Depending on the film, a different narrator is used.

5th Screen (1987-1996)

Visuals: On a sky blue background, there is a large transparent white FBI logo in the center. The black text superimposed over it reads:

Variants:

Another version of this warning has the underline run through the rest of the header, and has a period in place of the price value's comma. The warning is also more faded in color.
- A 16:9 version exists on a couple widescreen Classic Media releases.
On releases from CBS Music Video Enterprises, the underline is white and extended through the entire header, a comma is added after "reproduction", and the background is a dark blue/indigo gradient.
On the 2005 Elmo's Easy as ABC DVD, it's set against a black background. A different font is used, and there is no underline.

The Simpsons Movie (2007): An additional warning from the Environmental Protection Agency is shown on the same background explaining the organization's actual objective, as the organization is lampooned extensively in the film proper.

Visuals: On a blue/white gradient textured background, the colored FBI symbol is seen at the top along with a white box in front of it containing piece of text reading "FBI ANTI-PIRACY WARNING". Under it, a piece of white text reads "The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."

Variants:

Sometimes, the warning text will be rearranged.
The warning exists in both widescreen and fullscreen versions.
An eariler variant has been spotted on Warner Home Video releases where the warning is on a blue gradient background.
An enhanced version was used on some DVDs, UMDs and Blu-rays, in which the texture is different, the text and logo are smaller, and the text doesn't have a drop shadow.
On Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases, the font is no longer outlined and the FBI Anti-Piracy Warning seal is smaller.
An enhanced variant exists on Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Blu-rays, where a different background is used, the seal is bigger, and the text is rearranged.
A few language versions exist in both Spanish and French. It can be accessed by changing the language options on the player the disc is being played on to "Spanish".
A squeezed 4:3 version appears on The Story of Star Wars, a Walmart exclusive bonus disc included with Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.
On an awards consideration DVD of The Descendants, the screen crossfades to the "ATTENTION" screen of the 1998 warning.
On Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment releases, the text is in a different, more narrow font.
- On the 2005 VHS of Sky High and the special edition VHS of Tarzan, the warnings are played in reverse order,.
On the 2014 Eagle Rock Deluxe Edition DVD of George Strait: The Cowboy Rides Away - Live from AT&T Stadium, the warning is stretched to a 16:9 ratio.
Blue Underground releases uses a black background and the FBI symbol uses a red glow.

Visuals: On a black background is the "FBI" symbol at the top from before, this time aligned to the left. To the right of the logo is the Department of Homeland Security symbol. Below is the warning text. Then it switches to another screen, this time it has the Intellectual Property Rights Center logo. Below is the text: "Piracy is not a victimless crime. For more information on how digital theft harms the economy, please visit www.iprcenter.gov".

Variants:

The warning exists in both widescreen and fullscreen versions.
Sometimes, the "www.iprcenter.gov" text is in a teal color and has an underline.
A Spanish-language version of both the DVD and Blu-ray variants exists. It can be accessed by changing the language options on the player the disc is being played on to "Spanish".
On early releases from 2012-2015, the screens were in reverse order, and features the second screen crossfading into the first.
Some movies only show either the first screen or the second screen.
MPI Home Video releases uses the same blue textured background from the 2004 screen. The second screen also contains the shadows of the symbols from the first screen.
Circle Collective releases has the DHS symbol removed and the FBI symbol along with the warning text is in an outlined black color and is placed on a white background.
