Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Amber is an unpromoted Lance Cavalier that joins the player's army at the stat of Chapter 8. Amber sports a notably high personal strength base of 9, along with the tied-highest personal strength growth in the cast. This gives him notable damage output, especially when combined with the Silver Greatlance or other strong lances that allow him to one-shot certain physically frail enemies such as enemy Mages. Amber also has a high enough lance rank at base to use the Ridersbane, with effective damage he can easily one-shot most cavalry units. Upon increasing his weapon rank and getting access to the Brave Lance, Amber can serve as a potent player phase nuke for a large number of problematic enemies. Aside from his strength, Amber sports a high growth in HP and decent growths in defense and luck allowing him to be able to take a hit, however Amber's speed is quite mediocre, while his bases and growths in magic and resistance are notably low, making him vulnerable to magic users. Finally, Amber sports a decent base stat in dexterity, but low growth in said area.
Amber's personal skill, Aspiring Hero, combines well with his base class, where thanks to his higher mobility he will be able to pick off isolated enemies and thanks to the massive boost of +20 hit, he will likely not have any problems hitting his target, even with some of the more inaccurate lances and against some of the harder to hit enemies, such as Wolf Knights. Amber can also inherit the Divine Pulse skill in order to maximize his accuracy.
Due to coming at level 11, Amber has the option of immediately promoting to either the Paladin or Wolf Knight class. The Paladin class gives Amber more strength, HP, and access to the S-rank lance Brionac, which pair excellently with Amber's role as a player phase nuke. Wolf Knight does not improve Amber's strength, but it give a significant boost to his speed along with access to daggers, making it the better class if the player desires to try and fix Amber's speed. When combining the Wolf Knight class with speed boosting abilities such as Speedtaker and meals at Somniel can allow Amber to take off and start doubling most enemies, though the fastest enemies, such as Swordmasters, are out of his reach. This combined with daggers will give Amber potent 1–2 range combat allowing him to one round or significantly cripple enemies. However, speed boosting abilities such as the aforementioned Speedtaker are in high demand among the playable units in Engage and as such will need to be evaluated if other units that are close to reaching doubling thresholds are more valuable to the player's army.
On the topic of reclassing, Amber performs well in the Wyvern Knight class due to the class's high strength cap and flying mobility, the Warrior class grants Amber superior offensive growths, access to bows and the ability Merciless for even higher one-shotting potential. Halberdier is another offensive reclass option, granting Amber the skill Pincer Attack, which guarantees a follow-up attack if an ally is located on the opposite side of a foe that Amber attacks, if his weapon allows it. This lets him circumvent his mediocre Speed entirely to deal enormous amounts of damage on all but the toughest lategame opponents, even with very heavy weapons that slow him down.
Finally, when it comes to the question of which Emblem Rings suit Amber the best. The Ring of the Holy Knight synergizes well with Amber's base class, granting him additional movement, the Momentum skill, the engage attack Override and finally the skill Canter. This Emblem Ring allows Amber to maximize his one-shotting potential, while simultaneously granting him higher movement and the ability to retreat immediately afterwards with Canter. The Ring of the Young Lion is also a potent option for Amber as it grants Amber additional stats and Rise Above granting Amber a notable power increase, finally Hold Out is an invaluable skill for a frontline unit like Amber allowing riskier plays than usual. Amber can also use the Ring of the Lady of the Plains if the player desires to give Amber the means of reaching the doubling threshold for most enemies, even on Maddening, with the aforementioned Speedtaker skill, but this ring and said skill are in heavy contention among multiple units.
Overall, Amber offers little utility to the player's army, aside from being a potent player-phase nuke. However, considering his join time and personal skill, Amber is among the best units in terms of powerful player phase damage without needing an Emblem Ring throughout the entire game. If the player is willing to put in the work Amber's speed can be fixed in order to reach the doubling treshold, which allows Amber to become a potent enemy phase unit as well. Ultimately, Amber can provide notable damage to the player's army at the cost of lacking much other utility.
