Bison Film Company
Bison Film Company was an American film studio that operated from 1909 to 1917 and a label of the New York Motion Picture Company.[1] Founded in New York, the company quickly established a presence in Los Angeles, becoming one of the early film studios to set up in the burgeoning West Coast industry. Bison Film Company was known for producing a significant number of silent films, particularly Westerns, and partnered with entities like Miller Brothers 101 Ranch to create authentic sets and narratives.
During its period of activity, Bison Film Company released hundreds of films and featured early silent film stars such as Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Hoot Gibson, and Will Rogers, and film directors such as Henry MacRae (later director at Columbia Pictures). The company was also notable for its efforts in filming on location across California and Nevada, utilizing natural backdrops in areas like Big Bear Valley, Death Valley, and the Owens Valley. Bison Film Company eventually became associated with larger entities in the evolving film industry, including a period of merger with the Universal Film Manufacturing Company.
