Set up Logic Pro for spatial audio mixing

Mixing in spatial audio with Logic Pro is CPU intensive and requires a higher sample rate and large I/O buffer size. As such, recording audio or performing live with software instruments while mixing in spatial audio is not recommended. Instead, create a spatial audio mix from an existing stereo or surround mix.

WARNING: If you are creating a spatial audio mix from a finished stereo or surround mix, you may want to save a copy of your project or create a project alternative to avoid overwriting settings and parameters in the earlier finished mix.

Project sampling rate

Spatial audio mixing supports native sample rates of 48 kHz and 96 kHz. In projects with sample rates of 44.1 kHz or 88.2 kHz, bed and object tracks are converted in real time to 48 kHz or 96 kHz, respectively, before they are rendered by the Dolby Atmos plug-in. This conversion may affect performance depending on the nature of your project and available computing power. Therefore, setting the sample rate of your project to 48 kHz or 96 kHz at the outset is recommended if you plan to mix in spatial audio.

I/O buffer size

If your project has a sample rate of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, you will need to set the I/O buffer size to 512 samples. If your project has a sample rate of 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz, you will need to set the I/O buffer size to 1024 samples. See Devices preferences in Logic Pro.

Spatial audio and surround format

When you create a spatial audio mix from an existing stereo project, Logic Pro automatically changes the surround format to 7.1.2 when you turn on spatial audio. If you want to use 5.1 or 7.1 as your surround format for your bed tracks, you can change it in your project settings. See Set the surround format in Logic Pro.

If your project surround format is set to 7.1.2 and you use the Dolby Atmos plug-in to monitor your mix in 5.1.4 or 7.1.4, any bed track signals routed to the top two channels of the surround bed are balanced between the top four channels of your monitoring format.

Output routing and project frame rate

When you turn on spatial audio in the project settings, Logic Pro makes the following additional changes to your project:

  • Changes the outputs of all channels set to Stereo Output to Surround.

  • Creates a surround master channel strip in the Mixer with the Dolby Atmos plug-in inserted on an Insert slot.

  • Hides the Stereo Output channel strip.

Any existing effects in the Insert slots (of output channel strips) are hidden and no longer processed. The original insert configuration is memorized, so when you remove all surround outputs, the original output channel configuration is restored.

  • Changes the project frame rate to 24 fps.

Set up your project for spatial audio mixing

In Logic Pro, do the following:

  • Increase the I/O buffer: Choose Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio, click Devices, then from the I/O Buffer Size pop-up menu, choose 512 Samples for a project sample rate of 44.1 kHz or 48kHz (or choose 1024 for a project sample rate of 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz).

  • Turn on spatial audio: Choose File > Project Settings > Audio, click General, then choose Dolby Atmos from the Spatial Audio pop-up menu.
