Record software instruments and audio simultaneously in Logic Pro

You can record software instruments using MIDI input devices and audio using microphones, electric, electronic, and acoustic instruments simultaneously. You can choose to record a single music keyboard to a software instrument track while simultaneously recording audio tracks, or you can record multiple MIDI input devices to separate software instrument tracks while simultaneously recording audio tracks.

Record a software instrument and audio simultaneously

Before you start recording, make sure you create tracks for each instrument you want to record and connect a music keyboard to your computer. Also, follow the procedures outlined in Before recording audio in Logic Pro.

In Logic Pro, click the Record Enable button in the track header of each track you want to record to. Each clicked Record Enable button on an audio track blinks red to indicate that the track is ready for recording. Each clicked Record Enable button on a Software Instrument track turns red to indicate that the track is ready for recording.
Select one of the software instrument tracks.
Move the playhead to the point in the ruler where you want to start recording.
Click the Record button in the control bar (or press R) to start recording.
Recording begins after the predefined count-in.
Use a MIDI keyboard, the Musical Typing window, or onscreen keyboard to record software instrument parts and start singing or playing instruments to record audio.
Click the Stop button in the control bar (or press the Space bar) to stop recording.

Record multiple MIDI input devices and audio simultaneously

You can record multiple MIDI input devices simultaneously, each device representing a unique performance and triggering different sounds, on multiple software instrument tracks at the same time you record multiple audio sources. You need to configure each MIDI input device that you are recording to transmit on a unique MIDI channel. Consult the documentation of your MIDI input device for information on how to change its MIDI output channel.

When Enable Complete Features is selected in Logic Pro > Preferences > Advanced, you can record multiple MIDI input devices simultaneously to multiple software instrument tracks.

In the Track inspector for each software instrument track, use the MIDI In Port and MIDI In Channel pop-up menus to choose a unique MIDI port and MIDI channel that matches the MIDI output port and channel for the MIDI input device sending to that specific track.
