Create Logic Pro for Mac projects

You start working in Logic Pro for Mac by creating a new project. In the Project Chooser, you can choose a template to use as the starting point for a new project.

Each project has project properties including the project tempo, time and key signature, and more. You can edit some project properties in the Project Chooser when you create a project, and change them later while you’re working. You can choose to have Logic Pro create a project folder that contains the project file, along with subfolders for assets and other files used in the project (including audio files, impulse responses, sample instruments, samples, and Ultrabeat samples).

In the lower left corner of the Project Chooser, you can click the Get More Sounds button to open the Sound Library and download additional sound packs containing Apple Loops, patches, drum kits, and other material that you can use in your projects. See Download additional sound packs.

Create a project

In Logic Pro, choose File > New from Template (or press Command-N).
In the Project Chooser, select an option from the list on the left:
- To create a new, empty project: Click New Project.
- To see recently open projects: Click Recent.
- To open a Live Loops starter grid: Click Live Loops Grids.
- To choose a project template: Click Project Templates.
- To choose a user-created template: Click My Templates.
Select the type of project you want to create.
To edit project settings for the project, click the Details triangle in the lower-left part of the Project Chooser and do any of the following:
- To have regions in the project use the musical grid: Select the “Use musical grid” checkbox. See General project settings.
- To turn on flex for newly imported files: Select the “Use Flex Time for imported audio” checkbox. This also sets the Set Imported Files To pop-up menu in the Smart Tempo project settings to On (Use File Tempo). See Smart Tempo project settings.
- To set the project tempo: Drag the Tempo slider, enter a tempo in the Tempo field, or click the Tap Tempo button several times.
- To set the key signature: Choose a key signature from the Key Signature pop-up menu.
- To set the time signature: Click the arrows to change the number of beats, or double-click the time signature and enter a new time signature.
- To set the audio input: Choose an input source from the Input Device pop-up menu (for audio tracks only).
- To set the audio output: Choose an output (device) from the Output Device pop-up menu.
- To set the project sample rate: Choose a sample rate from the Sample Rate pop-up menu. See General Audio project settings.
- To set the project frame rate: Choose a frame rate from the Frame Rate pop-up menu. See General synchronization project settings.
- To set whether the project uses Spatial Audio: Choose Dolby Atmos to create a Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos project; otherwise, choose Off. See Create a Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos project.
- To set the surround format for surround projects: Choose a surround format from the Surround Format pop-up menu. See Overview of surround formats.
Click Choose.
The new project opens.

The first time you close the project, close Logic Pro for Mac, or create a project alternative, the Save dialog appears so that you can set the project name and location.

You can also choose whether to save the project as a single file (package) or a folder, and select which assets are saved in the project. For more information about saving projects, see Save Logic Pro projects. For more information about project assets, see Manage project assets.

Create an empty default project

In Logic Pro, choose File > New (or press Shift-Command-N).
In the New Tracks dialog, choose the track type and number of tracks to add to the project.
Click Create.

You can also set Logic Pro to create a project automatically on startup by choosing a startup action in the Logic Pro > Settings > General > Project Handling pane. See Project Handling settings.
