Set the sample rate of a project in Logic Pro for Mac

When working with digital audio, a key concept is the sample rate (the number of times an analog audio signal is sampled per second when being converted to a digital audio signal). Higher sample rates generally produce higher-quality (higher-fidelity) digital audio files.

For best results, the sample rate of audio files in a project should match the sample rate of the project itself. A mismatch in sample rates between an audio file and the project can result in the audio file playing back at a different pitch. To have Logic Pro automatically convert the sample rate of audio files to match the project sample rate, go to File > Project Settings > Assets, and select the “Convert audio file sample rate when importing” checkbox. You can also convert the sample rate of audio files to the project sample rate in the Project Audio Browser.

The higher the sample rate used, the higher the audio quality, and also the more audio processing power is required when working on the project. The CD standard uses the rate of 44.1 kHz, while video formats commonly use 48 kHz. Modern recordings can use rates of 96 kHz up to 192 kHz.

Important: If you change the project sample rate, any audio files in the project may no longer match the project sample rate, and may not play back correctly. In general, don’t change the project sample rate after you have recorded or added audio files in your project.

Real-time sample rate conversion

When you set the project sample rate in Logic Pro, the audio device selected in Logic Pro Audio settings is also set to the project sample rate, ensuring the proper playback of all audio files in your project.

If you open a project with a project sample rate (for example, 192 kHz) not supported by the selected audio device (internal or external) you are using for playback, Logic Pro performs a real-time sample rate conversion. For example, the 192 kHz audio files are played with the sample rate converted to 48 kHz. Nothing is lost in the process of conversion. Any internal processing and bouncing is always performed at the original sample rate, and at the highest quality level. Real-time sample rate conversion allows you to work on projects originally created on high-end audio systems using a lower-end setup.

Set the project sample rate

  • In Logic Pro, choose File > Project Settings > Audio (or use the Open Audio Project Settings key command), then choose a sample rate from the Sample Rate pop-up menu.

Note: When the Display is set to Custom, you can also view and edit the sample rate in the Display. Control-click the control bar and choose Customize Control Bar from the shortcut menu. In the Display column, select the Sample Rate/Buffer Size checkbox. Now you can click the sample rate shown in the Display and choose a new sample rate from the pop-up menu.

Match a file’s sample rate with the project sample rate

  1. In the Logic Pro Project Audio Browser, do one of the following:

    • Select an audio file, then choose Audio > Copy/Convert File(s) from the Project Audio Browser menu bar (or press Control-K).

    • Control-click an audio file, choose Copy/Convert File from the shortcut menu, then replace the file in the project.

  2. In the Copy/Convert dialog, choose the new sample rate from the Sample Rate pop-up menu.

The native software sample rate conversion function matches the sample rate of any audio hardware, thereby allowing the playback of projects on virtually any audio system, even if the hardware is not compatible in sample rate terms. Nothing is lost in the process. Any internal processing and bouncing is always performed at the original sample rate, and at the highest quality, even in cases where the hardware doesn’t support a particular sample rate. This feature allows you to work on projects originally created on high-end audio systems, with lower-end setups.

For example, imagine a project was created with audio hardware set to operate at 96 kHz. Moving this project to another computer (for example, a notebook computer) that doesn’t support the original project’s sample rate will result in the wrong playback speed. The native real-time sample rate conversion function will counteract this effect, allowing correct playback of the project on the portable computer, at any sample rate.

Note: Higher sample rates not only use up more disk space, but also require more processing.
