DNS Settings device management payload settings for Apple devices
You can configure DNS Settings settings for users of an iPhone, iPad, Shared iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro that enrolls in a device management service. Use the DNS Settings payload to specify apps that need to use specific DNS settings.
The DNS Settings payload supports the following. For more information, see Payload information.
Supported payload identifier: com.apple.dnsSettings.managed
Supported operating systems and channels: iOS, iPadOS, Shared iPad device, macOS device, visionOS 1.1.
Supported enrollment methods: Device Enrollment, Automated Device Enrollment.
Duplicates allowed: True—more than one DNS Settings payload can be delivered to a device.
You can use the settings in the table below with the DNS Settings payload.
Setting | Description | Required |

Protocol | The encrypted transport protocol used to communicate with the DNS server. The options are HTTPS or TLS. | Yes |
Hostname | The IP address or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the proxy server. | No |
Server addresses | A list of DNS server IP address strings, which can be a mixture of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. | No |
Server URL | The URL (starting with https://) used to validate the server certificate. If this field is empty, the hostname or address in the URL is used to determine the server address or addresses. Required if the Protocol is HTTPS. | No |
Matching domains | A list of domains used to determine which DNS queries use the DNS server. If this list is missing, the default DNS server is used. You can also use a single wildcard * prefix. For example, both *.melardclothing.com and melardclothing.com match against mydomain.melardclothing.com and your.domain.melardclothing.com but don’t match against mydomain-melardclothing.com. | No |
