Doctoral Award

Funding to support PhD level research for all health and social care professionals.

Our simplified Doctoral Award now includes our Doctoral Fellowship, Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship and Doctoral Local Authority Fellowship. 

This training award offers health and social care professionals from all backgrounds protected time to undertake a PhD in applied health or social care research. Your research project must be within our remit for personal career development awards.

Benefits include:

  • 3 years of protected time to undertake a PhD by research
  • funding for your full salary, including national insurance and superannuation, based on your full-time equivalent (FTE) for the duration of the award
  • full costs for the approved research project, training and development plan which will lead to further professional development, and associated conference fees up to £3,000
  • the option to maintain your clinical or professional competency by including up to 20% paid clinical or practice time within the award, if applicable

Who: all early career researchers working within health and social care settings including those in local authorities, academia and the NHS.

What: 3 years of fully funded protected time to undertake a PhD by research.

When: funding opportunities open twice a year in April and October.
