The Jet Star is a star-type Air Ride Machine that appears in Kirby Air Ride and Kirby Air Riders. As its name implies, its most remarkable trait is how its speed skyrockets the moment it goes airborne.

Appearance[edit]
The Jet Star is of average size. It has a very stylized and jagged design. Its basic structure is like an arrowhead, with the front tip split into two small wings extruding forward, and the back end with two small wings extending to either side. Beneath these two back wings are two smaller, metallic protrusions that end in hook-like shapes. Interestingly, the rear wings retract for a moment whenever the machine gets a large boost from either a perfect landing or a boost charge. The machine has a metallic surface that is mostly a blue-green hue, with black edges near the outside of its shape. The blue-green portions of the machine glow white the longer the machine is in the air. Its main source of propulsion is a single large engine in the rear, which expels jet-like yellow flames to give the vehicle velocity.
In Kirby Air Riders, the Jet Star retains the same design and shape as in the prior game, though the turquoise sections of it no longer glow white while it is airborne. The darker portions of the Jet Star now take on a rubbery texture with a subtle hexagonal pattern. The engine expels a yellow jet surrounded by a thin blue flame, akin to one seen on a stove. When the machine receives a speed boost either via boost charge, launching off of a ramp, or by simply being in the air, the jet gets stronger and takes on a blue-green color. As in the original game, when the Jet Star leaves the ground or releases a boost charge (regardless of amount charged), its wings also momentarily retract; however, instead of fully retracting as they did before, they now contract and bend backwards before reverting to their original position. When gliding, trails of air are visible from its primary wings. The engine of this machine also emits a long, turquoise trail behind itself when it is in normal motion.

Mechanics[edit]
The Jet Star has a unique mechanic where its speed suddenly spikes whenever it goes airborne. Additionally, the acceleration it gets from a perfect landing, as well as the rate it charges while airborne, is incredibly high. Despite this, it is below average in terms of actual glide distance, though ironically it is also the third-highest glider in the entire game, outdone only by the Wheelie Scooter and the legendary Dragoon. It notably has a very low top speed of only 20.5 mph (32.99 km/h) while on the ground—the fourth-worst in the game (superior only to the Rocket Star, the Compact Star and the Shadow Star)—but this can usually be overcome with even the smallest of jumps. In most other areas, the Jet Star is relatively balanced, with some areas only slightly above or below the average.
These factors combined allow this machine to race relatively well on any Air Ride course where gliding or jumping—even for short distances—is commonplace. It does, however, have significant trouble on the flat course that is Nebula Belt. In City Trial, it can be very versatile, and has a decent chance in most of the city's Stadiums. Despite being a decent glider, the machine ironically has a tendency to do poorly on Target Flight, as the Jet Star often propels through the air too quickly to properly aim.
How to unlock[edit]
To unlock this machine for use in Air Ride, the player must race with any machine in the Machine Passage course for at least two minutes. The mode—standard, Time Attack, or Free Run—does not matter. If the user covers 4500ft (1371.6m) of ground in under two minutes, the Jet Star will be unlocked.
In City Trial, the Jet Star can occasionally be found randomly throughout the city and be mounted like most other air ride machines. It is always available in City Trial's Free Run as well, stored in the same basement with the other machines if not selected.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
In Kirby Air Riders, the Jet Star makes a return as one of the Air Ride Machines that can be used in Air Ride, Top Ride, City Trial, and Road Trip. It functionally remains the same as in the original game, with it gaining extreme speed boosts upon leaving the ground. With Kirby and on the ground, it reaches a low top speed of 20 mph (33 km/h), but upon launching off of a ramp it briefly jumps to a speed of 52 mph (84 km/h) before settling to a maximum aerial speed of 36 mph (58 km/h). It also boasts surprisingly good handling and turning capabilities, and is heavier than one might assume. This weight, however, does work against its high lift stat, causing it to be unable to remain in the air for as long as its gliding contemporaries, such as the Winged Star.
Like in the original, the Jet Star's performance in Air Ride mode is highly dependent on the track. In courses such as Nebula Belt or Mount Amberfalls that contain relatively few ramps, the Jet Star will struggle. However, on courses with a large quantity of them (such as Celestial Valley), it will excel. Despite generally being regarded as a flying machine, the Jet Star's relatively high weight can put it at a disadvantage in Stadiums like High Jump and Air Glider by comparison to its contemporaries. It is a solid machine to collect Patches with in Skyah due to its good handling and somewhat decent HP, too.
How to unlock[edit]
The Jet Star must be unlocked to be used in the main modes. This can be done through the Miles Shop (where it costs 6,600 Miles to buy one), or through the Checklist. Additional machines unlocked will be available to modify in the My Machine mode.
- City Trial: Field - Stray too far from Skyah's edges and get struck by lightning
- Road Trip: Stadium - Ride a total of 5,469 yd (5000 m) during Stadium Challenges
In Road Trip, it must be unlocked by jumping onto it on the road or purchasing it at a shop. It can be found in Mega-Blossom Meadow or Glowtree Garden Drive.
