myVTax User Basics

The myVTax user experience for is similar for most forms and submissions. Features shown here don’t occur in every form, but they are all in some of the longer submissions in myVTax. Here are some general tips about working with myVTax. For additional help with myVTax, contact tax.myvtax@vermont.gov.

Validate an Address

Except for foreign addresses, myVTax requires that addresses entered are valid U.S. Postal addresses. Most often, this provides the Department of Taxes with an address to send mail to. Some forms also require a physical address, such as a homestead location or business location.

With an address entered on the form, click Validate Address.

" "

If the address is valid as entered, the Validate Address hyperlink will change to Validated.

" "

If there are one or more known alternate versions of the address, a pop-up offers choices. Select the most accurate address. After the window closes, the Validate Address hyperlink will change to Validated or Verified.

" "

Many forms have a box to mark if a physical address is the same as a mailing address. If you have mail sent to a P.O. box or a different address, leave the box unmarked and enter the appropriate address where indicated.

Many forms also have box to check if the address is a foreign (non-USA) address.

Getting Around: The “Previous” Button

Don’t use your browser’s “back” arrow.

" "

If you need to go back to a previous page to view or make a correction, use the Previous button, located on the lower right of the screen to the left of the Next (or Submit) button. Do not use your browser’s back function. Doing so returns you to the starting point. It causes you to lose all the unsaved information you have entered. You will need to start over from the beginning or, if you saved it earlier as an unfinished draft, from where you last saved.

Getting Around: Breadcrumbs

The breadcrumbs feature provides another way to go back to a previous screen.

" "

Breadcrumbs are the blue checkmark circles connected by lines at the top of the screen. You can click on breadcrumb to go directly to any previous section of your submission. Breadcrumbs can only be used to go backward, though. Use the Next button located on the bottom right to go forward.

" "

To go back to a breadcrumb that is hidden from the range of view, click on the left-most visible crumb. This will slide the view over to the right so you can select earlier steps.

Add a Record, Copy a Record, Delete a Record

Some forms, such as the Landlord Certificate form and the Current Use Application, use “record” tabs for entering people’s information. This enables you to enter information for multiple people using one submission. Each person is one record.

Create Record creates the first record, and Add Record creates a new blank record tab.

Copy Record duplicates the last open record. This is useful if you have multiple people at the same address. Complete the details for the first record, then copy it. This creates a new record with the same name, address, etc. Just change the parts that are different.

Use Delete to delete extra record tabs if you made too many for any reason.

Sample: Landlord Certificate

Save a Submission Draft

While you are working through some forms, you may need to step away, take a break, or pause to gather information. If you don’t do any actions for 15 minutes, myVTax times out. To be sure you don’t lose progress, it’s better to save the draft periodically.

" "

Select Save Draft is located on the lower left of the screen. It allows you to save your submission progress for up to 90 days from the date you start it. You will receive an access code to resume the form. You do not need to create a login account to resume editing a form. The verification code remains the same, even if you save the draft multiple times.

" "

Enter your email address in the pop-up and click OK.

The next screen is the confirmation. It shows the email you entered and a Verification Code. Write the code down, because you need it to access the saved request later.

You can save the submission multiple times and come back to it using the same verification code.

" "

Click Continue Editing to return directly to the submission, or click Finish Later to come back another time.

Access a Saved myVTax Submission (or Request)

On the myVTax home screen, select Access a Saved myVTax Request in the Submissions & Correspondence pane.

" "

You might need to access a submission right after you have filed it, or you might need to continue completing a form in myVTax.

If you completed a submission, you received a verification number to use along with your email. If you saved a partially completed form, you entered your email and received a Verification Code

Use the email and Verification Code. For a saved and partly completed return, the code remains the same, so you can leave and come back multiple times using the same code.

Enter your email address and the Verification Code and click Submit.

" "

For a saved return (the Current Use Application is shown here), the next screen shows your form submission where you last saved it.  At the top of the screen, click Continue Editing in one of the two places it appears.

" "

myVTax then brings you back to your submission.
