The person in this role ensures the accuracy of revenue reports and disbursement documents, reviews reconciliations, performs ledger researcher, compiles and analyzes data, and assists with preparation of reports during the Department's annual audit. If you have a background in finance and a passion for public service, this job may be for you! The annualized salary for this position ranges from $65,600 to $102,800. Tax Auditor I, II, III, V

The Department of Taxes’ Compliance Division is seeking a motivated professional to conduct audits that ensure the fair and accurate administration of Vermont’s tax laws. You’ll review and analyze taxpayer returns, prepare assessments and adjustments, conduct on-site audits when appropriate, and communicate with taxpayers, their representatives, and stakeholders during appeals and settlement discussions. The ideal candidate is curious, collaborative, digitally savvy, self-driven, enjoys learning new tools, and communicates clearly about complex or sensitive topics. Tax Analyst IV, V
Montpelier, VT | Application Deadline: August 26, 2026
Are you looking for an opportunity to use your background in business and customer service to improve both local and state government, while assisting Vermonters with work that impacts virtually every person in our state? The Tax Analyst works closely with Vermont Department of Taxes staff, taxpayers, and many other state agencies and towns, providing support through phone, email, and in-person interactions, as well as reviewing returns for accuracy, correcting mistakes, or requesting additional information. The ideal candidate has extension tax knowledge, experience in business or fiscal duties, knowledge of local government, strong communication skills for explaining complex topics to diverse audiences, and a desire to continue to learn and grow. This position is being hired at two levels: the annual salary for Level IV ranges from approximately $65,000 - $102,00; the Level V hiring range is $69,700 - $109,000. Both positions come with excellent State of Vermont benefits.
