Need Tax Prep Help?

Eligible Vermonters can get free help preparing and filing their taxes. See if you qualify for any of the four programs listed below.

Before you visit a filing help location, make sure you have what you need to file.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program (TCE)

The IRS sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. In Vermont, these programs are provided statewide by Vermont Community Action Agencies

American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax-Aide Program

You don't need to be an AARP member to use the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program

If you have a complicated return that uses less-common forms, check with the service location first or call 1-800-906-9887.

United Way's MyFreeTaxes Service

MyFreeTaxes is provided by United Way in partnership with VITA and AARP. It helps people file their federal and state taxes and claim credits in person or online for free. You may:

  • File your own taxes: File online for free if your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) in 2025 was $89,000 or less. This option takes most filers an hour or less to complete. Free email, chat, or phone help is available if you need it.
  • Have your taxes prepared for you: Have your return prepared for you online or in-person if your AGI is $69,000 or less in 2025. This option typically takes 2-3 weeks.
