Capture a recent audio performance in Logic Pro for Mac

Using Flashback Capture, you can capture a recent audio performance to an audio track, even if Logic Pro for Mac wasn’t recording while you were playing. You can capture audio only while the project is playing. While a project is stopped, no audio is captured. To capture multiple sections of audio, you can stop playback, move the playhead to a different position, and restart playback.

Flashback Capture saves your performance when there is an incoming audio signal on the track but not when there is silence. The project must play for a minimum of four seconds. Flashback Capture can save up to one minute of audio. The settings of the last focused audio track are used for the captured recording. For example, if you last focused an audio track that you’d set to record in stereo using channel inputs 1 and 2, subsequent captured recordings also use these settings.

Note: The Flashback Capture button  in the control bar and Flashback Capture in the shortcut menu change from a dimmed state to an active state to indicate that audio has been captured and can be added as a region to your project.

Use Flashback Capture to recall a recent audio performance

  1. In Logic Pro, click an audio track to give it focus.

  2. Click the Play button in the control bar to start playback. Sing or play your instrument.

    Any incoming audio is captured while the project is playing.

  3. To create a region containing your recent audio performance, make sure the audio track is in focus, then do one of the following:

    • Click the Flashback Capture button  in the control bar (or press Shift-R).

    • Control-click the Record button  in the control bar, then choose Flashback Capture from the shortcut menu.

      An audio region containing the performance is created at the position where the incoming audio was detected.

      Note: If you stopped and restarted playback in step 2, you can repeat step 3 to create separate audio regions corresponding to the times when the project was playing.

Use Flashback Capture to create take regions in Cycle mode

  1. In Logic Pro, choose Settings > Recording, then in the Overlapping Track Recordings area, choose Create Take Folder from the Audio Cycle On pop-up menu.

  2. Turn on Cycle mode.

  3. Start playback and sing or play your instrument.

  4. When you’ve finished your performance, do one of the following:

    • Click the Flashback Capture button  in the control bar (or press Shift-R).

    • Control-click the Record button  in the control bar, then choose Flashback Capture from the shortcut menu.
