Change the color depth of an image in Pixelmator Pro on Mac

Color depth (or bit depth) refers to the number of unique color values or shades (in grayscale images) available in a single pixel. The higher the bit depth, the more color information a pixel can store.

When you create a new document in Pixelmator Pro, you can choose whether to work with 8 or 16 bits per channel. 8-bit color, also known as true color, includes 16 million color values, making it closer to the human eye’s viewing limit of 10 million colors. 8-bit color is sufficient for most digital photo editing, and is capable of handling basic edits and compositional changes to an image. 16-bit color, also known as deep color, includes 281 trillion color values and is recommended for color-sensitive work, advanced corrections, and print workflows where color accuracy is paramount.

You can also change the color depth of an existing document.

  1. In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, open an image.

  2. Do either of the following:

    • Click the More button in the toolbar, then choose Color Depth.

    • Choose Image > Color Depth.

  3. Select 8 Bits/Channel or 16 Bits/Channel.

  4. Click OK.
