Export a Spatial Audio project to an MP4 file in Logic Pro for Mac

In addition to the uncompressed Dolby Atmos ADM BWF master file, you can export your Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos project in Logic Pro for Mac to a compressed MP4 file. This special type of master file is used for quality control to play back your mix on a consumer device, simulating the user experience by using the same encoding that streaming services use.

You can export two types of MP4 files: Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos and Dolby AC-4 L4, which differ in their encoding and embedded content. Both use the Dolby encoder based on the Dolby Atmos ADM BWF export of your project.

  • MP4 (Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos)

    Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos is an encoded audio format used by streaming services such as Apple Music and Amazon Music to deliver your Dolby Atmos mix to listeners. The file contains a rendered surround version of the Dolby Atmos mix with embedded metadata stored in the Dolby Digital Plus bitstream. This metadata allows the decoder to recreate the original Dolby Atmos mix from the downmix.

    You can choose from two profiles in Logic Pro:

    • Film: Used for video-based content such as movies, TV shows, and streaming video. The exported MP4 file contains the Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos audio stream and an embedded video track with a black frame. You can set the bit rate to 448 kbit/s or 768 kbit/s.

    • Music: Used for music-based content such as music or podcasts. The exported MP4 file only includes the Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos encoded Spatial Audio mix, optimized for Apple Music with a fixed bit rate of 768 kbit/s.

    Note: The Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos format ignores the binaural render modes set in the Dolby Atmos plug-in.

  • MP4 (Dolby AC-4 L4)

    The audio codec Dolby AC-4 is the successor to Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) using lower bit rates (Logic Pro uses 448 kbit/s). L4 stands for Level 4, a more advanced profile with higher channel counts and object-based audio in immersive mixes.

Export a Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos mix to an MP4 file

  1. In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

    • Choose File > Export > Project as Spatial Audio.

    • Choose File > Bounce > Project or Section (or press Command-B) to open the Bounce window, and then click the Export as Spatial Audio button.

  2. In the Export Spatial Audio File as dialog, select:

    • Project: Export the entire project.

    • Selection: Export the currently selected cycle range, marquee selection, or the range determined by the beginning of the first selected region and the end of the last selected region.

  3. Choose one of the following from the pop-up menu:

    • Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos

      Choose the Film or Music profile and the corresponding bit rate.

    • Dolby AC-4 L4

  4. If you need the ADM BWF file in addition to the MP4 file, select the checkbox “Also export an uncompressed Dolby Atmos ADM BWF master.”

  5. Enter a name in the Save As field at the top of the dialog and navigate to the location where you want to save the file.

  6. Click Save.
