Surround MultiMeter Loudness and Level in Logic Pro for Mac

The Loudness Meter and the Level Meter are always visible in the plug-in window regardless of the selected view (Full, Compact, or Meters).

Loudness Meter parameters

The Loudness Meter to the left of the Level Meter shows the momentary loudness level. Loudness meters measure the perceived loudness of a signal which is indicative of human hearing, making it a useful reference tool when mixing or mastering. It is measured in Loudness Units, relative to Full Scale (LUFS), where each LU unit is equivalent to one dB. Loudness measurements are not performed for individual channels, they measure the summed signal of all channels of your surround signal, excluding the LFE channel.

Surround MultiMeter provides three Loudness meters and the Target Level handle, conforming to the EBU R 128 specification:

  • Integrated Loudness meter: The numeric LU-I display shows Loudness Unit-Integrated, measured from the time you start playing back your project until you stop. The value is reset when you start playback again.

  • Short-term Loudness meter: The numeric LU-S display shows the Loudness Unit-Short term, measuring the most recent 3 seconds of the input signal.

  • Momentary Loudness meter: The single bar shows the Loudness Unit-Momentary (LU-M), measuring the input signal with a 400 ms integration time.

  • Target Level handle: You can drag the yellow vertical line on the meter bar to set the Target Level. It functions as a visual reference where the color of the meter bar and numeric display changes from blue to yellow.

Level Meter parameters

The Level Meter displays the current signal level on a logarithmic decibel scale. The signal level for each channel is represented by a blue bar. Signals (above the draggable target level) approaching the 0 dB level are represented by a yellow bar. When the level exceeds 0 dB, the portion of the bar above the 0 dB point turns red.

The numeric values can display levels based on the three different meter characteristics, Peak (Sample Peak), RMS, and TP (True Peak). The numeric value above a Level Meter shows the highest measured value (peak hold) for the meter characteristics chosen in the Level pop-up menu (Peak, RMS, or TP). Click a numeric value or the Reset button to clear all displays.

  • Level pop-up menu: Choose a display setting using Peak, RMS, Peak & RMS, True Peak, or True Peak & RMS characteristics.

    • The two RMS characteristics show the effective signal average and provide a representative overview of perceived volume levels.

    • The Peak characteristic, also referred to as Sample Peak, measures the actual level of each individual sample.

    • The True Peak characteristic is the most accurate level meter, using oversampling to detect peaks that often can be higher than the actual sample peak.

  • Return Rate pop-up menu: Choose how quickly analyzed signals return from peak/maximum levels to zero or incoming signal levels. This is expressed in dB per second.

  • Peak pop-up menu: Choose the hold time for the Level Meter. Choose 2, 4, or 6 seconds—or infinite.

    Note: The Hold button must be turned on for the selected time value to have an effect.

  • Hold button: Turn on to show a small colored segment above each level bar which indicates the most recent peak level.

  • Reset button: Clear all numeric values and peak hold segments.

  • Target Level handle: Drag the yellow line on the meter bar to set a target level. Signals (and numeric values) above this level and below 0 dB are shown in yellow. The LFE and center channels each have their own handle. All other channels are set with a single handle.
