Warriors: Three Hopes

I have been searching for you. And look what you brought me—the three who fancy themselves sovereigns, ruling over that abomination's wretched spawn. What unexpected luck. I do hope you are all prepared to face death this day.
— Epimenides

Epimenides is the penultimate boss in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. A powerful mage who lived during the War of Heroes, fighting alongside Nemesis. They manage to achieve immortality by transferring their core into Arval, and eventually Shez, hellbent on seeing the death of Sothis.

Biography

Epimenides is first introduced in Warriors: Three Hopes, where they are the penultimate boss if Byleth is recruited. He wields the Hrotti tome, although it is unclear where he gained it.

Despite much of his background and motivations unknown, quite a bit can be assumed. Empimenides is most likley Agarthan due to his appearance and knowledge of Zaharas, as well as recognizing members of Those Who Slither in the Dark.[1][2] To this end, he shares their hate for Sothis and her followers, allying himself with them and the Liberation Army, seen in the game's opening cutscene.

Epimenides's goal is simply to destroy humanity, which he believes to be nothing but beasts. Ironically, he accomplished this in a manner similar to Seiros. His method was to create Arval, who he used to house his entire soul. Eventually, Arval, now at this point unknowing of who they actually were, found Shez, and through what few memories they had, wished to destroy Sothis. This plan of his was likely in place since the War of Heroes.[3]

Role

Epimenides is the boss of Chapter 16 of all routes if Jeralt and Byleth are recruited. He is also featured in Arval's paralogue, Cycles of Nostalgia, speaking while Arval fights through a memory of battling Seiros and her arny.

Personality

Epimenides, like the rest of his Agarthan brethren, detest the goddess and all those who follow them. They are motivated by the salvation of their world and the death of Sothis. In a similar vein, they are quite self centered. As a skilled mage who has mastered immortality, he is arrogant, believing himself to be greater than all others. This extends to fellow Agarthans, evident in his willingness to kill Solon in order to cast the forbidden spell of Zaharas and his supposed differing of methods to Thales.[4] In his paralogue, he begrudgingly fights for Nemesis, still calling him a beast throughout.[5]

He enjoys toying with people, as shown when he summoned the specters of friends and allies in Into the Chasm. He also seemingly enjoys setting people up, as when he summoned said specters, he taunted them for cutting them down.

  3. "???: I created you. The cycle of the world... The rehousing of souls... How desperately I sought this secret art! But it demanded precision. One defect—one essence wrongly transplanted—would lead to consequences most irreparable. I knew I must oversee the process myself in order to save my beloved people.
Arval: When my consciousness first initialized, I was nothing. I remember the sound of water... Of bubbles. The sound of a massive object slowly lurching along... I thought the noise would continue for eternity. But then...a change. Something gave way. The water began rushing rapidly. Pale shadows closed in around me. Amidst deafening sounds, I walked desperately in search of light.
???: That was an unforeseen accident. I was sure all had been lost to the waters. It was fortunate I had created you, for you proved useful in a way I never expected...It pains me to do this to you, but alas, all was written from the beginning." — Epimenides to Arval, Event - A Fleeting Dream, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
  4. "I know Thales has his methods, but they don't sit well with me." — Epimenides, Cycles of Nostalgia, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
  5. "Mysterious Soldier: Nemeisis has retreated, Lord Epimenides. We would be wise to do the same.
Epimenides: Go. I will hold the enemy at bay. Worthless beast though he may be, Nemesis is our ally for now. We cannot abandon him.
Mysterious Soldier: His is a useful sort of madness——we should be certain to wring all we can from him before we discard him." — Mysterious Soldiers to Epimenides, Cycles of Nostalgia, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
