The Axe Knight or Axe Cavalier (Japanese: アクスナイト Axe Knight) is a basic mounted class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It is one of the four weapon-specialist versions of the Cavalier, specializing exclusively in axes as its name suggests, and is a counterpart to the Free Knight/Sword Knight, Lance Knight and Arch Knight/Bow Knight.

Axe Knights are statistically very similar to their counterpart base mounted classes, but owing to their exclusive axe use their performance varies in practice. They are slowed down substantially by the sheer weight of their weapons of choice, but in exchange deal significantly greater damage on average with the higher might of axes. They also tend toward having bulkier defenses than their counterparts, with somewhat higher HP and defense. In Thracia 776, Axe Knights are forced to dismount to operate indoors, which forces them to wield swords instead of their usual axes, thus reducing the burden of axe weight upon them and making them faster and more accurate fighters.

In Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776, and Radiant Dawn, Axe Knights promote to the Great Knight class (translated as Axe Paladin in Radiant Dawn), which in the latter game in turn promotes again to Gold Knight. In Path of Radiance, they instead promote to Paladin like their counterparts and have a choice of a new weapon type to wield upon promotion. In Engage, they can promote into Paladin or Wolf Knight.
