Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, based on Swahili Uganda (“Buganda, the kingdom”), from Luganda Buganda (“the place of the Ganda”). In the 19th century, Swahili traders rendered the name of the kingdom of Buganda as Uganda, a form subsequently adopted by the British. The name, originally referring to Buganda, was then extended to the larger territory under British rule and ultimately to the modern country.
Compare the parallel international adaptations Norwegian Nynorsk Uganda, Danish Uganda, Swedish Uganda, German Uganda, French Ouganda and English Uganda.
Pronunciation

- 2026 June 2, Anita Haslie and Fredrik Lyngås Pedersen, “Uganda”, in Store norske leksikon[3]:
- Uganda er et land i Øst-Afrika.
