      Etymology

      [edit]

Internationalism, ultimately from Italian Eritrea, the name assigned to the Italian possessions on the Red Sea coast when they were constituted as the colony of Eritrea on 1 January 1890. Italian Eritrea was originally an ellipsis of Colonia eritrea (“Erythraean colony”), with eritrea the feminine form of eritreo (Erythraean; of the Erythraean Sea).

The Italian adjective is from Latin erythraeus (reddish; Erythraean), ultimately from Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, red), from Proto-Hellenic *erutʰrós (red), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rudʰrós (red), from the root *h₁rewdʰ- (red, ruddy). The name therefore ultimately refers to the Red Sea, known in Latin as Mare Erythraeum (“Erythraean Sea”).

Parallel international adaptations include Danish Eritrea, Swedish Eritrea, German Eritrea, Dutch Eritrea, French Érythrée and English Eritrea.
