Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, based ultimately on Arabic مُرَّاكُش (murrākuš, “Marrakesh”), the Arabic name of the city of Marrakesh, possibly from Zenaga. The country name was transmitted through European forms including Spanish Marruecos and Portuguese Marrocos. The city name came to be used for the country as a whole; the deeper etymology of the Arabic name and the immediate transmission route into Norwegian are uncertain.
Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Marokko, Danish Marokko, Swedish Marocko, German Marokko, Dutch Marokko and English Morocco.
