Israel launched a wave of devastating attacks on southern Lebanon and Beirut on Wednesday, killing as many 254 people as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted the Iran war truce does not include its campaign against Hezbollah.

A further 1,165 have been injured in the attacks.

The UN rights chief Volker Turk said the scale of the attacks in Lebanon is "horrific", urging the international community to help end the unfolding "nightmare".

"The scale of the killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific," Turk said in a statement. "Such carnage, within hours of agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran, defies belief. It places enormous pressure on a fragile peace, which is so desperately needed by civilians."

The strikes came despite Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, which engaged in the Middle East war on 2 March, not claiming any operations since 1am (Tuesday 2200 GMT).

Israel renewed an evacuation order for an area more than 40 kilometres inside Lebanon, saying "the battle in Lebanon is ongoing".

It followed another warning to evacuate a building in the southern Tyre region, which Israel then struck, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency.

NNA reported several strikes across the south.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has acted as a mediator in the conflict, said the two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US applied "everywhere including Lebanon", but Netanyahu later said the country was excluded.

Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreed by Washington and Tehran, saying he hoped his country would be included in the regional truce.

Aoun said Beirut "continued efforts to ensure that the regional peace includes Lebanon in a stable and lasting manner", according a statement from the presidency.

Red Cross 'outraged' by 'death and destruction' in Lebanon
11:21 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The Red Cross said it was "outraged by the devastating death and destruction" in densely populated areas across Lebanon Wednesday as Israel launched a massive wave of attacks.

Heavy explosive weapons with wide-area effects struck bustling neighbourhoods, including the capital Beirut, without effective advance warnings, the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement.

"People across Lebanon were holding their breath for a ceasefire agreement, but a wave of deadly strikes plunged the country into panic and chaos," said Agnes Dhur, the ICRC's head of delegation in Lebanon.

"Many who had begun thinking of the moment when they might return to their homes have been rushing to streets and hospitals, searching for missing loved ones or seeking a safety that feels increasingly out of reach."

Greek PM says tolls for ships to cross Hormuz 'unacceptable'
10:39 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday it would be unacceptable for ships to have to pay a fee to cross the Strait of Hormuz as Iran has suggested, and such a move would set a dangerous precedent for freedom of navigation.

Greece controls one of the largest merchant fleets globally in terms of cargo-carrying capacity. Amid ceasefire talks with the US. and Israel, Tehran, which controls the chokepoint, has proposed fees or tolls on vessels to safely pass through the strait.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested the US and Iran could collect tolls in a joint venture, while the White House said the priority was reopening the strait without limitations.

Mitsotakis said the strait always had freedom of navigation and that needs to continue.

"I don't think that the international community would be ready to accept Iran setting up a toll booth for every ship that crosses the strait," Mitsotakis told CNN. "That seems to me to be completely unacceptable."

The centre-right leader added that a separate international agreement regarding the strait may be necessary.

"But this agreement cannot, I repeat, cannot include a sort of a fee that ships will have to pay every time they cross the strait. This was not the case before the war started and it cannot be the case after the war finishes," he said.

"We would be setting a very, very dangerous precedent, if that were to happen, for the freedom of navigation."

7:53 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

"The deep historical distrust we hold toward the United States stems from its repeated violations of all forms of commitments -- a pattern that has regrettably been repeated once again," Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said in a statement posted on X, listing three violations of the Iranian proposal.

"Now, the very 'workable basis on which to negotiate' has been openly and clearly violated, even before the negotiations began. In such (a) situation, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations is unreasonable."

Israeli forces damage UN convoy vehicle in Lebanon: Rome

The convoy immediately stopped and returned to base.

The incident, in which no injuries were reported, prompted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to call on Israel to cease attacks in Lebanon.

"The continued Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which have already caused too many deaths and an unacceptable number of displaced people, must cease immediately," Meloni said in a statement in which she condemned the incident.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani summoned the Israeli ambassador in Rome on Wednesday evening after earlier telling parliament "Italian soldiers in Lebanon are not to be touched".

Tajani told parliament that only one vehicle had been damaged, but Crosetto spoke of "minor damage to the vehicles".

"It is unacceptable that Italian soldiers deployed under the UN flag, tasked exclusively with guaranteeing peace and stability, should be exposed to risky situations by the Israeli army," Crosetto said.

KSA's oil pipeline bypassing Hormuz damaged in Iran attack
2:11 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Saudi Arabia's crucial East-West oil pipeline, currently its only outlet for crude exports, was hit in an Iranian attack and other facilities in the kingdom were also targeted, an industry source told Reuters on Wednesday. The pipeline was diverting around 7 million barrels per day (bpd) from the kingdom's oil heartland in the east to the Red Sea port of Yanbu after Iran effectively shuttered the Strait of Hormuz, trapping huge volumes of oil and gas and sending world energy markets skyrocketing.

Flows through the pipeline are expected to be affected, the source said, adding damage was being assessed. That could exacerbate what experts have called the world's worst energy crisis.

Aramco uses about 2 million bpd domestically, leaving roughly 5 million bpd for export. Yanbu loadings averaged a near-capacity 4.6 million bpd in the week starting March 23, shipping data shows, despite attacks targeting the hub on March 19.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement on Wednesday it hit several targets across the region with missiles and drones, including what it called oil facilities of American companies in Yanbu.

Trump said on Tuesday the attacks would be paused after the two sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire.

Trump has called for countries that depend on oil from the Gulf region to break Iran's chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, but European countries are unlikely to join mine-clearing or other missions to free up navigation as long as hostilities continue, according to two European diplomats.

Iran has vowed to obstruct the vital chokepoint with mines until the war ends.

Lebanon's army warned people against returning to the country's south on Wednesday, where the Israeli military is still launching attacks, as Israel said the ceasefire with Iran did not include its conflict with Hezbollah.

"In light of regional developments and reports circulating about a ceasefire, (the army) urges citizens to wait before returning to southern villages and towns and to avoid approaching areas where Israeli occupation forces have advanced... since they may be exposing themselves to the ongoing Israeli attacks," the Lebanese army said in a statement.

European shares climb as Middle East ceasefire sparks relief

European shares jumped more than 3% on Wednesday as a two-week Middle East ceasefire sparked a relief rally across global markets, raising hopes that oil and gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz could soon resume.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 3.6% at 611.73 points, as of 0713 GMT, and poised for its best session in a year, if current momentum persists.

Regional markets also mirrored the move, with Germany's DAX up 4.6%, while London's FTSE 100 climbed 2.3%.

Market reaction was swift after U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, less than two hours before his deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, where 20% of the world's oil transits, or face devastating attacks on its civilian infrastructure.

Beyond the immediate relief, investors are waiting to see whether the truce can pave the way for a lasting resolution.

Energy markets also responded swiftly, with Brent crude futures falling 15% below $100 a barrel, offering some respite after weeks of elevated oil prices.

European equities have been under intense pressure since the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran erupted on February 28, with the continent's heavy dependence on oil imports through the largely blocked passage amplifying the pain.

Sectors linked to travel, industrials, and banking advanced between 5% and 7%, as they are typically seen as prime beneficiaries of lower energy costs and falling bond yields.

Meanwhile, energy sector lost 4.2% as crude prices tumbled.

Investors will turn their attention to euro zone retail sales and producer price data, due later in the day, which could provide further insight into the economic impact of recent energy market volatility.
