Female authorship at leading institutions

Female gender ratios are shown for institutions, which are ranked according to their Share in the Nature Index of authors whose genders can be reasonably inferred (see methodology).

This analysis includes a metric that calculates the expected values for the proportion of female authorships at an institution, based on how much research they publish in male- or female-heavy sciences. If an institution’s actual proportion of female authors surpasses this calculated value, it would suggest that the institution is outperforming expectations in promoting gender diversity.

Gender was inferred by feeding unique combinations of first name, last name and origin country/territory to an algorithm. The analysis counts authorship instances rather than individual authors and so reflects publication activity rather than a strict headcount of individuals. Limitations of the data include only binary genders (male/female) being included and uneven exclusion rates for specific countries/territories. See methodology for more information.
