UMC's role in the WHO PIDM
As a WHO Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, UMC handles the operational aspects of the programme to promote safer use of medicines and vaccines globally.
UMC carries out the following activities as a WHO Collaborating Centre to support the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring (WHO PIDM):
- Provide pharmacovigilance tools that support well-functioning pharmacovigilance systems for WHO PIDM members.
- Provide technical support to WHO to inform its work on improving access to information in the global medicines safety database.
- Support WHO’s efforts in countries to address gaps in pharmacovigilance development plans and meet regulatory requirements, following WHO’s benchmarking activities.
- Help build capacity in the WHO PIDM by conducting training and developing educational materials on pharmacovigilance best practices.
- Provide technical input to WHO to inform scientific investigations and development activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of medicine- and vaccine-related problems.
- Support WHO in improving knowledge-sharing across the WHO PIDM.
For almost 50 years, UMC has worked side by side with WHO to put medicines and vaccine safety at the heart of healthcare globally. UMC's role in supporting capacity building through education and training, strengthening pharmacovigilance systems, and maintaining VigiBase is integral to the programme's mission.
Sharing global safety insights in VigiBase
VigiBase is the WHO global dabase of adverse event reports for medicines and vaccines. It is the world’s largest source of post-marketing safety data with more than 40 million reports shared by programme members.
This unique resource, bringing together reports from around the world, makes it possible to uncover hidden patterns in reporting that might otherwise be missed in national databases.
