Failure cannot be an option!!
"When diplomacy fails, you get the call!."
— Back of the English Flyer
An attempt from Sega at rebooting Space Harrier that surrounds four people from earth called the Hyper Soldiers trying to save the planet when evil forces threaten to dominate it.
Planet Harriers has tropes like:
- Adapted Out: The protagonist from the prior Space Harrier games seemingly makes no appearance.
- Batter Up!: Nick can strike enemies with a baseball bat as part of his baseball player motif.
- Denser and Wackier: While Space Harrier's elements are quite fantastical for its time, Planet Harriers scales this up with fantastical, funky characters and more variable stages thanks to the improvements in graphical technologies.
- Easter Egg: The Final Boss can mold itself into the Sega Dreamcast logo.
- Expy: The Final Boss takes on multiple forms just like Seven Force.
- Giant Medical Syringe: Cory wields one as her main weapon as part of her nurse getup.
- Heart Container: Planet Harriers featured heart containers purchasable from the shops at the end (and sometimes in the middle) of levels. This was a game where you were jetpacking through planet landscapes.
- Musical Assassin: X rocks with his guitar to best enemies.
- Modesty Shorts: Cory wears a pair of shorts under her nurse-like outfit.
- One-Letter Name: X is the only character in X’s name.
- Secret Character: Opa Opa appears in the game as a character that can be unlocked.
- The Smurfette Principle: Cory is the only female out of the four main characters.
- Video Game 3D Leap: The game takes a step from 2d sprites and gameplay into three dimensional graphics.
