Hello Kitty Island Adventure (Video Game)

Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a Life Simulation Game based on the Hello Kitty franchise developed by SUNBLINK in collaboration with Sanrio, and is available on Apple Arcade for iOS, macOS, and Apple TV. It was released on July 28th, 2023, with a Nintendo Switch and Windows release in January 30, 2025, and a PlayStation 5 release on August 5, 2025.

You have been invited by My Melody to join her on a trip to a tropical island, where she plans to open a gift shop in the island amusement park. What began as a leisurely trip with her and her friends suddenly turns into a bigger adventure when the airplane starts malfunctioning, forcing all the passengers to evacuate. Then as it turns out, the island itself is mysteriously abandoned. With Hello Kitty and co., you are tasked to restore the theme park back into the paradise it once was.

The game includes the following DLC*:

  • The Deluxe Edition (released for non-Apple Arcade platforms alongside the base game) includes three deluxe bundles to let new players get up to speed with veteran Apple Arcade players, even including event content from the game's first year.
  • Wheatflour Wonderland DLC (released on September 18, 2025 for Apple Arcade, Windows and Nintendo Switch, with a PlayStation 5 release on October 2nd, 2025) features a fantasy world made of wheat and the character Cogimyun.
  • City Town DLC (originally an expansion released on Apple Arcade on September 18, 2024 for free, later released as paid DLC on April 16, 2026 for other platforms) features the titular imagination-powered town along with the character Usahana.
  • Tea Garden DLC (a content pack released on August 6, 2026 for all platforms) includes new clothing, decor, and food recipes as well as a new questline involving a mysterious tea party.

Compare Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which the game takes inspiration from.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure contains examples of:

  • Ability Required to Proceed: While you can get around most of the island with enough stamina and persistence, flippers are required to start swimming, Retsuko's lava-swimming friendship ability is required for the Caldera Plunge challenge, and a few out-of-the-way areas in Cloud Island and Merry Meadows can only be accessed with potions or help from friends.
  • Accent Slip-Up: Although there is an official "English (United Kingdom)" locale in addition to the regular "English" one, the translators slipped up often and led to cases like Pochacco saying "Nothing energizes me" and that it was a good day for "soccer", and other characters also had sporadic "z/s" grammar mistakes.note  Those 2 of Pochacco's slip-ups were fixed in late November 2024.
  • A.I.-cronym: TOPHAT stands for Tons Of Playful Hugs And Thrills.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The player character does not have a specified gender, nor is the character referred to as having one. The character editor can however be used to make the character look male or female, or to remain ambiguous, and all aspects of the character can be changed on demand by clicking on a mirror.
  • Ancient Artifact: Chococat is always excited to find these on Friendship Island, to the point that in a quest in the second arc (or the postgame, depending how you view it) he assumes everything My Sweet Piano finds when he takes her on an archaeological dig is a priceless ancient artifact... including his own book he dropped earlier. He does, with the player's help, find the Merry Meadows temple, which he identifies as predating the Big Adventures Park infrastructure... which has some interesting implications about the Nuls.
  • Animated Music Video: An official music video for the game was published in July 2024, for a song that was commissioned specifically for the music video. The music video is also a spoiler for most of the postgame, including a giant squid called the Island Spirit, making it an extreme case of Trailers Always Spoil.
  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • If the player gets stuck in a spot they can't easily get out of while exploring, the game will automatically teleport them out of it.
    • Most Companion abilities help make grinding Friendship XP or completing challenges a bit easier.
    • The game won't stop you from creating food you don't have a recipe for yet. The only restriction is that some require two ingredients or not being far enough in the game to have one.
    • After update 2.5, Keroppi's Critter Chic quest toned down the amount of critters you need for each item across the board.
    • Update 2.14 of the Apple Arcade version raised Usahana's maximum friendship level from 20 to 35. Having her at level 20 on all platforms will have her start giving you Usahana Boxes so those players that already had her maxed out wouldn't feel left behind.
  • Artistic License – Chemistry: The animations for the cooking stations do not always align with the dish output. The egg pan animation involves cracking and frying an egg regardless of the dish. Dishes that can be cooked on the egg pan include omelets and crêpes, which require different cooking processes.
  • Ascended Meme: The title stems from a famous joke in the South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft", where Butters says that the then-nonexistent game was the only one his parents allowed him to play. The devs claim it's a coincidence, and they didn't know about the South Park line, however.
  • Benevolent A.I.: TOPHAT, who acts polite, bowing, and formal, especially as his memories gradually get opened up. He was created by the Little Twin Stars to keep Big Challenges company, who had previously run the archipelago facilities on his own.
  • Betting Mini-Game: A small seahorse racetrack is located near Hangyodon's underwater club. The player can bet Game Tickets on which of the three seahorses that will win that race, and will win some form of reward regardless of the result.
  • Big Dam Plot: One of the quests is about smashing tunnel boulders with a pickaxe, as the boulders block the waterflow to a dried-out lake.
  • Bland-Name Product: All of the video games Moppu references in his dialogue and quests, aside from the actual playable minigames, are references to other games, like Wyvern Era, Hello Knight, and Twirl Twirl Disco.
  • But Thou Must!: During quests, around 95% of the dialog options have the same outcomes, which is to proceed with the quest. Although the player can occasionally pick snarky options among them, the other characters will most of the time not react to it as being snarky and will instead respond normally to the player.
  • CAPS LOCK: TOPHAT's name is consistently spelled in all-caps, to fit that he is a technological hologram.
  • Catchphrase: Pekkle uses the phrase "Cheese and Crackers!" on many occasions when the player character talks to him, to the point that it's noted in-universe.
  • Cave Behind the Falls: A quest in the early postgame leads into a Lost World with a very lush garden with grass and flowers everywhere, in addition to lakes and stone walls, despite seemingly being under the ground. Its resident Caring Gardener is Wish Me Mell. Once contact has been made, the gardener will have no qualms with leaving the cave from time to time into the rest of the archipelago.
  • Character Customization: The player can choose to be a canine, a feline, bird, rabbit, horse, sheep, or rodent during the Character Creation screen, with different options for fur patterns, noses, beaks, etc. depending on what they choose. This can be changed at any time in Tuxedosam or My Melody's shops, or at any tall mirror found elsewhere.
  • Character Title: Being a Sanrio property, Hello Kitty's name is featured in the title.
  • Cheesy Moon: Moon Cheese can be found on Cloud Island and the Moon itself, and Chococat studies the Moon to see if it really is made of cheese and concludes it is.
  • Christmas Episode: The annual "Give & Gather" event that runs from late November to roughly the 25th of December.
  • Collection Sidequest: Gudetama shows up in various small-sized food products or meals spread across the archipelago, which the player can add to their count by using their portable camera to take a picture of them. Taking photos of many enough Gudetama appearances will reward the player with Gudetama-related items from Pochacco.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: Mount Hothead will eject players that accidentally fall in the lava pools, but then later you're prompted to make it active. You go right through the volcano without issue afterward.
  • Cooking Mechanics:
    • The player can use the kitchen set in Hello Kitty's shop to make a variety of dishes that can be eaten by the player or given away as gifts to other characters to increase their friendship levels.
    • Further into the game, the player also becomes able to cook pizza, ice cream, pudding, coffee, cotton candy, and soda from various devices.
  • Cryptid Episode: The 2026 Sunshine Celebration cutscene where Pikki tries to hunt a cryptid for an off-brand-Girl-Guides merit badge. The cryptid doesn't exist — it's a hoax perpetrated by Badtz-Maru pulling pranks — but Keroppi declares she's shown her work so she still deserves the badge.
  • Cuteness Overload: The entire game runs on this, which is something to be expected given it's a Sanrio game.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: When using game controllers with Apple Arcade, various crafting tools are normally activated by pressing the secondary action button.note  But if the crafting tools are placed in a house, the crafting tools are instead activated with the primary action button, note  while the secondary action button instead enters furniture editor mode.
    • Most visitors' dialogue options after unlocking them as permanent residents have "Will you change outfits?" (if applicable) before "I love having you here!", but for Nina it's inverted. This has led to an embarrassing amount of accidental navigations to Nina's outfit menu.
  • Deserted Island: The player and Sanrio characters venture to one in hopes of restoring it to its former glory. It turns out it isn't completely deserted, however, as the characters discover that the Nul populate the islands and befriend them.
  • Easy Level Trick: Some puzzle rooms can be easily circumvented with Pompompurin's jumping ability, or Kuromi's thermal updraft.
  • Elephant in the Living Room: The largest building on the main resort street, located between My Melody's store and the Gudetama sign, is hardly acknowledged or noticed by anyone, despite the building being there since the very start of when the characters arrived at the resort. The player character can get on its roof to collect comic issues, but even they will never talk about it in dialogs either. Presumably it's Pochacco's house as his default location is standing in front of it, but unlike the other characters' homes, it doesn't double as a shop or game.
  • Fell Asleep Standing Up: Pompompurin can occasionally be found doing this as an idle.
  • Fetch Quest: The Sanrio characters give the player quests that require them to retrieve and bring them items for various reasons, such as Badtz-Maru asking the player to gather materials to craft a water balloon for him so that he can start a prank war with My Melody. The player starts lampshading this heavily after the first few times.
  • Fishing Minigame: Once the player has crafted a fishing rod, they can fish in most bodies of water with the optional use of food as bait. Reeling in a caught fish uses a slider akin to the grind sliders in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Extra items can occasionally be acquired from caught fish.
  • Fitness Nut: Pochacco talks a lot about fitness and can be seen at the center of the resort doing stretches at all hours of the day unless interacted with. When starting a specific quest, he brags about having a mile time of 7 minutes when properly nutritioned. Although that's 3 minutes behind the real-life world record, it's reasonably fast for a hobby jogger along paths.
  • Flash Step: Cinnamoroll does this in a few dialogs at such high speeds as to be a non-space version of Shipless Faster-Than-Light Travel, to the player character's bafflement who see it as if he remained in the exact same position throughout the dialog.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: The main basis for the "Swimming Lessons" quest is that Retsuko can't swim. If the player character had Retsuko as their companion prior to the quest being started or unlocked, she had no problems swimming along with the player.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: The Warp Whistle mailboxes aren't just a player convenience — other characters, especially Cinnamoroll, use them to quickly cross large distances too.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Both main friends and visitors will often mention other visitors as if they aren't on the island yet. Chico's quest when you get him as a permanent resident has him tell the player who Nina is like they've never met her, even though Nina can become a permanent resident before he does. Many of the friend characters will wistfully wish their friends and family could come to Friendship Island even when they've been living there for years.
  • Grave Robbing: A mild example. Various graveyards are found in Spooky Swamp. The top surface of the graves occasionally have mushrooms or comics issues spawn on them, and none of the characters or the game itself have any objections to the player character grabbing those items and running off with them. The graves themselves are never dug up, if there even is anything beneath the graves given the game's plot about renovating a theme park.
  • Green Aesop: A mild example. After the player character has obtained a freediving kit, bags of rubbish will spawn in the area around Hangyodon's comedy club and can be collected. After a later quest, a very large plant becomes able to recycle the bags into either rare keys that can open large water-themed chests or to seed spores that can be placed on underwater rockbeds. The bags of rubbish respawn more often than other collectibles, and are primarily found close to Hangyodon's standup club. The reasons for this are never made clear.
  • Guest-Star Party Member:
    • The player can ask a character to be their companion. If the companion is not considered critical for a quest and the quest can therefore be started with the companion still with them, this will make the companion an extra team member in that quest. The game has no problems with this and can handle it perfectly well, and can in fact give the player additional companion abilities, although minor oddities like only 3 characters riding a minecart when 4 characters are in the quest can occur.
    • It is also possible for a quest's designated team and the companion to both tag along to do another quest entirely without having completed the original quest, resulting in 4- or 5-member teams handling tasks that the player was normally supposed to do solo.
  • Guide Dang It!: After having completed the quest to progress from Merry Meadow Fields to Merry Meadow Plaza, the game does not provide any proper hints on where to find a second giant seed to progress further there. Even increasing the friendship meter with Wish Me Mell could seem like a dead end due to several friendship meter quests passing by without any giant seeds, with the intended solutions being to either increase Wish Me Mell's friendship meter to 12, or to break a very obscurely hidden boulder south of Outer Cloud Cabin on a floating platform that can only be reached with help from islanders or potions. The location of the fourth giant seed planter that leads to the Gazebo also requires a potion or Kuromi's ability to reach.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Pekkle's default outfit is a blue-red shirt and no pants. The player character can also optionally choose not to wear pants.
  • Happy Dance: The main idles of My Sweet Piano and to some extent Pekkle.
  • Healing Checkpoint: The Rainbow Reef mailboxes can be used as this, as using one to warp to the same mailbox will refill the freediving Sprint Meter.
  • The Hilarity of Hats: The Nul, a species of non-verbal green squid-like creatures, are big fans of wearing hats of various types. Giving or taking away hats are the only interactions the player can do with most of their individuals.
  • Hint System: If Chococat is at friendship level 10 or higher and is a companion to the player while they are in a dungeon, talking to Chococat gives a one-paragraph hint as to how to solve the dungeon's puzzle.
  • Hitbox Dissonance: The hitbox when catching insects or small animals is very generous, with the net being able to catch insects that are almost a meter away from where the net is being swiped.
  • Identity Amnesia: TOPHAT has ended up with this by the time the main questline starts. He gets his memories back by the time you need to enter Icy Cave.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: While the Sanrio franchise has many different spellings and names for their bigger characters, the character names in the game generally correspond to those used on Sanrio USA's websites. Some characters do have fairly inconsistent spellings regardless as of version 2.1.1:
    • LittleTwinStars and Little Twin Stars are used interchangeably.
    • Gudetama is usually spelled in his official lowercase name ("gudetama"), but is spelled with a capital G ("Gudetama") in the titles of quests about him.
    • The quest description for "Boggy Memories" in the "English (United Kingdom)" version refers to My Melody as "MyMelody".
    • Usahana is often referred to in promo material by her full name U*SA*HA*NA.
    • Until late November 2024, Wish me mell was sometimes spelled in title case ("Wish Me Mell") in all Latin-alphabet game versions except the standard English version.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible:
    • Big Challenges speaks primarily by repeating the sound "Gao" over and over, but all other characters immediately understand the exact sentences he is trying to say.
    • Milk communicates with sentences consisting entirely of Emojis. In contrast to the above example, there are no subtitles for the player to rely on, instead having to rely on the order of Emojis to figure out what he is saying.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Cinnamoroll. A very fluffy creature flying around with fluffy ears, with a cat-like facial expression (even though he's a dog), who by default wears pink clothing, whose Best Friend outfits include pink pastel frills, and who likes baked goods, ice cream, and coffee.
  • In-Universe Game Clock: The game operates on two different clocks. The real-time 24-hour day that determines character gifting, touring visits, and collectible items, and a 1-hour day that handles in-game day/night lighting and the appearance of some insects and fish. The latter can be fast-forwarded by having the character go to bed, while the former can not.
  • It's Up to You: Downplayed Trope. While the player is tasked with almost everything, such as retrieving and crafting items for the characters, decorating, and so on, the player can ask characters to be their companions depending on certain friendship levels (Hello Kitty and My Melody at level 2, Cinnamoroll as high as 18) and if they are not busy with quests, and these characters will assist them in performing various tasks, but it will still be up to the player to complete it.
  • Lethal Lava Land: The Red Hot Rampage minigame in particular, with lava pits and lava geysers frequently encountered. Red Hot Ruins and Lava Ruins are also full of lava pits, but are for the most part less dependent on crossing them with jumps.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Some sidequests task the player with collecting or crafting a set number of items, which normally takes some time due to limited daily resources. The counters count when the needed items are obtained through any means, regardless of the intended methods, as long as the items are neither tied to the inventory stock or to be gifted. Going inside a house, placing the needed item, removing the item, and doing this over and over again will make it possible to complete the quests within a few minutes.
    • Companion abilities (except for Chococat's Hint System) are deactivated during dungeon puzzles, but temporary potions can still be used while in the dungeon, with the Thermal Potion in particular making some of the dungeon puzzles far easier to reach the goals of, by floating onto higher platforms that players were normally intended to solve box-stair puzzles to get to.
  • Marathon Level: Though it's not a level as such, bribing Wish me mell from ❤0 to ❤20 in order to continue the main postgame questline, takes more than 3 months in real time, even if the player gifts her every day and also uses tools like Hello Kitty's friendship ability, Friendship Bouquets/Flowers, and certain daily quests that allow gifting 4 times a day instead of 3.
  • The Maze: A relatively small maze in Spooky Swamp is used for both a Game Ticket time trial and for a purple switch time trial. A larger maze is found in section 7 of the Haunted Mansion quest.
  • Mean Boss: When the player tries to strike up a chat with Retsuko, she will usually be angry about her boss calling and texting her while she is on vacation, before moving her attention to talk with the player. Watching her series will confirm this, as Ton is every bit as horrible as she says.
  • Meaningful Name: Big Challenges lives up to his name, willingly getting involved in high-stakes construction projects and extreme sports like surfing and mountain climbing.
  • Memory Match Mini-Game: The Game Ticket challenge room in Gemstone Town (Not to be confused with Gemstone Corral's chicken catch challenge) is a memory match with gambling elements. The player pays 1 Game Ticket to enter the 4x3 grid. Correct guesses will give collectibles, in particular the otherwise-rare iron rocks and iron ingots; getting a full grid cleared will give furniture or a music album. 2 wrong guesses will send the player back to the cashier where they would have to spend another Game Ticket to get back into the room, with the grid positions being retained between sessions until the grid is cleared.
  • Merit Badges for Everything: During the 2026 Sunshine Celebration, which is themed to summer camp and has uniforms reminiscent of Scout camp, if you have both Keroppi's siblings as permanent residents, Pikki goes on an expedition trying to hunt a cryptid for a critter identification merit badge.
  • Mind-Control Music: Pekkle's "Dance All Night" ability that allows to change the in-game day/night cycle. If the player asks him to change the time, it works through Pekkle telling the willing player to dance with him for the entire duration of the change's timespan, which can range up to 80% of an in-game day cycle. The player then regains proper consciousness at the end of the dance, with anything after the start of the dance being Missing Time for them as if they were asleep, but they find themselves still at standard energy, at the same place they started, and ready to run around like usual.
  • Minecart Madness: Most cave areas have minecart rides in parts of them, in particular the ride to obtain floating gemstones to make soda with. The ride in the first volcano quest has a boulder constantly follow the carts, but no control inputs have any effect and the quest team Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing despite the boulder always being mere centimeters behind Chococat's cart.
  • Mythology Gag: The kintsugi vase outside of My Melody's shop is likely a reference to the Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures episode "Imperfection", Keroppi's comment about missing being able to play the trumpet may be a reference to "Keroppi Faces the Music", and Kuromi mentions Chococat's time machine from "Back to My Friends".
  • Never Split the Party: Badtz-Maru shoots down My Melody's suggestion to split up and look for their other friends after landing on the island, which Hello Kitty attributes to Badtz-Maru's obsession with horror movies.
  • No Antagonist: None of the characters act hostile to each other at any point, the closest being Badtz-Maru saying to Hangyodon that some of his jokes weren't funny. Even the ex-companion TOPHAT is looking for has never done anything mean.
  • No Fair Cheating: Trying to time travel by changing the system clock will lock you out of any time-limited events and quests that happen in between now and the latest date you changed to.
  • No Hugging, No Kissing:
    • Averted; Dear Daniel appears as a visitor in the game and is explicitly stated to be Hello Kitty's boyfriend. One of the conditions for attracting him to the main island is that the player decorate a house near the resort so that he can be close to her. A postgame questnote  has the player set up a date between the two of them as well.
    • Ruby also appears as a visitor, and is explicitly referred to as Pekkle's girlfriend.
    • Played straight with Retsuko, who shows no indications of the lovesickness she had in Aggretsuko. Haida's crush on Retsuko is still present, however.
    • Some of the parent and grandparent characters will talk about their spouses and how happy they are together, but this is rare, and usually they'll talk about their child/grandchild or their hobbies instead. They also cannot share rooms in a cabin and do not need to be in the same expanded cabin either, though they will need to be in the same general area (for example, both George and Mary White need to live somewhere in the Seaside Resort for proximity to their daughters).
  • Once More, with Clarity: When TOPHAT's memories start coming back, his memories are still fuzzy so there's parts that are glitched out. After he fully remembers everything, the glitches are removed to reveal Big Challenges.
  • Opening the Sandbox: Once you complete a some initial quests and open the first gate, a large amount of the rest of the map becomes open to you. While you'll need some items and abilities to visit some places, you have a lot of freedom on what you want to pursue from then on.
  • Our Angels Are Different: The Little Twin Stars show up sporadically in the latter half of the main questline, mostly to thank the player for collecting sets of glowing crystals and to give exposition for the last quest, and then vanishing again almost as soon as they arrived. In the postgame they have a sky area of their own, and characters debate on whether they're actually angels or just aliens.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: After completing a quest to make other characters able to attend Hangyodon's standup show, some of the characters can become mermaids if they are companions to the player. Some characters including Chococat and those attained after the first main questline cannot, instead continuing to rely on freediving (though the Under the Sea event in 2026 extended mermaid form to Cinnamoroll, Tuxedosam, Pompompurin, and even Hangyodon). The player can only become a merspecies by wearing a 3-set of scale clothes, which greatly extend their air meter. A later quest allows the player to transform while in any other clothes by automatically switching to one of their mermaid outfits. The companions will remain in their normal legged forms while underwater if the player goes underwater through a mailbox warp or if the characters are spawned at the Kelp Maze photo spot.
  • Oxygen Meter: Your stamina meter doubles as your oxygen meter when you dive, so increasing your stamina also increases how long you can stay underwater. You can make the timer last even longer once you can don a mermaid-themed clothing set.
  • Pass Through the Rings: The underwater challenge courses task you with swimming through a series of rings within a time limit.
  • Perky Goth: Kuromi tries to live up to this, having a feisty personality and clothing, and selected her vacation area in advance to be in a gloomy swampy semi-haunted forest on top of a plateau. She is periodically seen brewing magic potions and wearing witch hats, though she does not perform acts of magic.
  • Play Every Day: With the daily and weekly challenges, giving each character gifts daily, visitors to the archipelago only staying for a few days at a time, collectible resources being replenished daily, and the occasional login bonus, you are heavily incentivized to play every day.
  • Power-Up Food: Though the player isn't shown eating them, Stamina Apples give the player a permanent significant extension of the Sprint Meter for rock climbing and freediving.
  • Quest for Identity: The main questline of the game is to gradually restore TOPHAT's memories.
  • Relationship Values:
    • Island Residents have a friendship level you can increase by completing quests and giving gifts. Higher levels let you bring one along as a companion with special abilities, give you items, unlock new quests, and more.
    • Island Visitors have a star rating that goes up as you complete their requests. At five stars, you can make them permanent residents.
  • Scaling the Summit: The last maingame quest involves climbing up to Icy Peak, a climb that is very windy and snowy, given that it is High-Up Ice-Up and in a state of Endless Winter. Only one wildlife species has endured up there without freezing solid (The "Woolox", a wooly critter), and the only fauna is the Snowcicle and the postgame watering can flowers. While there are many signs of sentient activity including wood paths, fences, crates, lit fire lamps, and a mailbox, there are no permanent residents there.
  • Sequence Break:
    • A relatively mild example. The respawn mechanic for when getting stuck, can make the player respawn inside Icy Peak when the entrance is still blocked, letting them enter as early as when the gate to Spooky Swamp has been opened, and can reach the top with just one Stamina Apple. The skip can be made permanent by walking to a nearby mailbox on the top to make it able to warp to from elsewhere. Though the skip has no impact on the story progression, and the player must have deduced the storyline's events or know obscure Sanrio history to realize the frozen alligator on top is TOPHAT's companion, knowing that will figure out most of the plot more than 50% earlier in the game than intended.
    • Much bigger breaks were averted by the developers, who went far to try to ensure that players could not skip the southern islands before the timber gate was opened, placing palm trees at conspicuous spots to make many of the best routes virtually impossible (especially Moon Island to Mount Hothead), with attempts able to land mere centimeters from the shore but never quite onto dry land.
  • Shout-Out: Has its own page.
  • Side View: The Red Hot Rampage minigame is a 2D platform time trial, with the goal of collecting as many of the 14 collectible food items as possible within 3 minutes. Many of the jumps are very tight if the player does not use assistance tools like potions, companions, or multiplayer, with lava pits on most of the level as well as lava geysers in several of the pits.
  • Sliding Scale of Linearity vs. Openness:
    • Level 5. Once the gate to Spooky Swamp has been opened, the player is free to run and climb around on almost all of the archipelago to their heart's content. There is a de facto maingame related to the questline to restore TOPHAT's memories, but there's plenty of sidequests that are unlocked in parallel as well. A few overworld areas would be tricky to access right off the bat (For instance the volcano crater, Icy Peak, most underwater areas), but they too eventually become accessible to the player who can then explore those too freely.
    • The postgame worlds Merry Meadow and Cloud Island are relegated to Level 4 due to their heavy use of invisible walls.
  • Socialization Bonus: Playing in multiplayer has its benefits. You can complete a weekly quest for Friendship Beads you can exchange for old event furniture, and completing Friendship Tasks increases your level with your friends, granting additional abilities and emotes.
  • Spark Fairy: Variably called Guiding Light or Guide, who leads the player to their destinations if they have chose to enable it for a particular quest. The characters never acknowledge the light, let alone treat it as a character in its own right. It is good at leading to quest targets but struggles much more with finding hidden objects within designated areas.
  • The Speechless: The Nul species and Corune communicate by body language alone. The other characters usually understand what they're trying to tell them.
  • Sprint Meter: The player character can climb the sides of certain mountains, but their stamina bar depletes quickly, making longer climbs more difficult.
  • Sprint Shoes: Having Pochacco as a companion will give the player character this effect. The effect will increase if Pochacco's friendship meter is increased furthermore with food bribing.
  • Squee:
    • Some of the characters have this reaction when you give them their three-heart gifts.
    • In the "Mini Mode" quest, My Sweet Piano squees over how adorable the Dessert Machine is.
    • Upon meeting Milk, Retsuko can't help but gush over how cute he is, making her want to have kids of her own one day.
  • Strange Soda: One of the possible soda fountain flavors is the "Joke Soda" with tofu flavor.
  • Stuck Items: The swimming fins and diving mask will be listed as "Always Active" when the player has obtained them. The character will however never be shown actually wearing them, despite their effects being active.
  • Studio Audience: Hangyodon occasionally says to himself "Hangyodon was filmed before a live studio audience", before apparently being surprised by his own statement and says "...What?" When he says all this, there's usually no audience anywhere in sight besides the player, potential companions, and some Nuls standing in corners.
  • Suddenly Shouting: During the tutorial where cupcakes are thrown around, Badtz-Maru exclaims in mostly caps "I have HAD IT WITH THESE CAKES ON THIS PLANE!"
  • Sugar Bowl: The setting and story are extremely cute, positive, and harmless, to the point of being Lighter and Softer even than its closest competitor, Animal Crossing — even the fishing mechanic is catch and release.
  • Summer Campy: The 2026 edition of the Sunshine Celebration was themed around summer camp and involved the player collecting jars of fireflies to exchange for various camp-related clothes and furniture. While it's a lot happier than most examples, the gang still has to deal with running their own activities, which often go very wrong (like Ganta stealing pastries for an activity or Pikki deciding to get a merit badge by hunting a dangerous cryptid even if it turns out to be a prank from Badtz-Maru).
  • Super Drowning Skills: While the player character cannot drown, they cannot even approach the water's edge without the game reminding them that they need flippers to swim. They have no problems swimming after completing the quest to obtain flippers, however.
  • Super-Scream: Retsuko has several such moments in most of the quests she appears in, which breaks nearby boulders or causes lava to rise. Later quests have the player, Keroppi, Hangyodon, and Pekkle help her out occasionally, but they are much more joyful about it.
  • Sweet Tooth: Several of the characters love sweets if the player bribes them with them. Hello Kitty likes apple sweets in particular, Pompompurin loves puddings, and Cinnamoroll loves coffee and luxury candy.
  • Tattle Tail: Several of the characters waggle their tails if the players give them 3❤ gifts, including Pochacco, Chococat, Retsuko and Wish Me Mell.
  • Theme Naming:
    • Though Big Challenges is merely a Meaningful Name when he is first interacted with, many of the later quests and objects related to him are directly based on his name, including Big Challenges' Big Challenges, Bigger Challenges, and The Greatest Challenge.
    • Nearly all of the quests in the Tea Garden DLC have two-part Alliterative Titles with both parts separated by an ampersand, referencing Pride and Prejudice.
  • Through His Stomach:
    • One of the main mechanics of the game is to bribe the other characters with food, or in some cases with items or insects, to increase the friendships between the player and the characters. Doing these bribes is all but mandatory to unlock missions and complete the storyline.
    • The only significant characters who can not be bribed are TOPHAT before Big Challenges has been rescued and visiting tourists. The latter means that the tourists will have to visit the archipelago several times before they would decide to stay.
  • Time Keeps On Ticking: The air meter continues to drain while the pause menu is open while underwater.
  • Time Loop Trap: Cinnamoroll claims this is what happened to his airplane at some point, which makes it always positioned just south of the main island and can be repeatedly skydived from.
  • Time Trial:
    • The islands have various optional timed platforming races that are initiated by stepping on a purple switch with a flag tied to them. Winning the races allows players to craft victory trophies.
    • The Game Ticket challenge in Spooky Swamp is a straightforward time trial run, and becomes trivially easy if Pochacco is the companion and provides his Sprint Shoes effect.
    • The Game Ticket challenge in Mount Hothead is also a time trial, where many of the platform jumps are fairly narrow to do.
  • Took a Level in Smartass: The player character gets increasingly more snarky dialog options when they gradually realize during the game that they keep being sent to fetch quests very often.
  • Trip to the Moon Plot: A post-game quest has Big Challenges' roller coaster rocket blast the player so high they land on the Moon, which can be explored like any other area.
  • Unintentionally Unwinnable: When City Town was released on the rest of the platforms and all its quests with it, there were sometimes quests that couldn't be completed first due to not finishing another quest that triggered around the same time (like being stuck on "Last, But Not Least" before completing "Inspo Buddies", which gives you an item needed to complete the former). Thankfully, the devs always patch these out soon after being alerted of the issues on the game's Discord server.
  • Veganopia: The extensive cuisine of the islands is entirely vegetarian, including the pizza meals. Milk for advanced recipes is found underwater as collectable objects, although eggs for advanced recipes are produced from poultry to make for instance omelette and breakfast pizza. Even the fish and seafood that can be used as ingredients late in the City Town storyline is considered imaginary tech.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Kuromi and Badtz-Maru regularly snark at each other or about each other, but they still get along fine.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting:
    • The player character can change between being a chicken, a cat, a dog, a rabbit, an equine, a sheep, or a rodent on demand by clicking on any mirrors in the game.
    • Certain characters become more or less voluntarily merspecies when entering water after the Hangyodon standup show quest, including Hello Kitty, My Melody, Keroppi, Badtz-Maru, and Kuromi. They instantly return back to their regular species when exiting water.
  • Warp Whistle: The player can activate and use various mailboxes located through the world to teleport to different areas, saving them the trouble of having to go there by foot.
  • Water Is Air: The player character and any nearby characters can talk perfectly normally to each other while they are both underwater, even if neither of the two are merspecies.
  • Water-Triggered Change: Hello Kitty, My Melody, Keroppi, Badtz-Maru, and Kuromi after the Hangyodon standup show quest, except in specific circumstances where they retain their legs underwater. This also applies to the player while they are wearing a three-set of scale clothes, with a later quest involving Chococat and Tuxedosam assisting the player in limiting a three-set of scale clothes to be worn in water only to remove the complications of repeatedly swapping outfits on land and in the water. In addition, starting with the 2026 Under the Sea Celebration, this applies to Cinnamoroll, Tuxedosam, Pompompurin, and Hangyodon as well.
  • Weather Report: The pause menu has a weather forecast on the left. For most of the game until very deep into the postgame, it always shows sun with light clouds, with the forecast becoming rather incorrect if the player is at the very windy and snowy Icy Peak.
  • Who Is Driving?: In the intro tutorial, the plane in mid-flight has problems with a cupcake baking machine in the cockpit that throws cupcakes throughout the cabin. All passengers on the plane are told to evacuate by skydiving with parachutes, all of their luggage is spread across the archipelago, and the nominal operator of the aircraft (Cinnamoroll) also evacuated, leaving the plane still flying forwards with no pilots and no passengers, and with no indication of where and how it landed afterwards, with the plane still being on autopilot when Cinnamoroll accidentally traps himself in the Comedy Club's mailbox, and he had left the Mailbox Key on the plane. The plane had remained in operative condition with no known refuelings throughout that timespan, with Cinnamoroll later claiming the plane has been trapped in time.
  • The Wild West: Gemstone Town resembles it, especially after the barndance building and the chicken pen have been restored.
  • World of Funny Animals: The only humanoids in the game altogether are the Little Twin Stars and Nisetama, who shows up for photoshoots during an annual festival in May.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: The quest you get when unlocking Fenneko as a permanent resident implies this is happening, as she and Retsuko "don't get that much vacation" and for her it's only been a couple days, while the player and their friends have accomplished so much on Friendship Island and forged bonds that took weeks or months. It would also explain what's going on with the plane, which is still suspended in the air at the moment it went haywire, and why visitors often have just a day between their "vacation" visits.
  • You Mean "Xmas": Plenty of real-world holidays are given fictional equivalents for events, such as Give & Gather (Christmas), Lighttime Jubilee (New Year's), Luck & Lanterns (Lunar New Year), Colorblaze Carnival (Holi), Paper Parade (Pride), or Scholastic Celebration (back-to-school). While Halloween is mentioned by name as Kuromi's birthday, in this universe it seems to be just one day in the larger Spooky Celebration.
