Heir (Video Game)

"If you can dream- and not make dreams your master
If you can think- and not make thoughts your aim
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
"

Heir is a Platformer and a tribute to Shadow of the Colossus by Antony Lavelle. The setting is the kingdom of Sofie, which is being besieged by the Great Golems of Old. The aged and childless king promises that whoever slays them will become his heir, and the mysterious Pale Man of the North is up for the challenge.

Can be played on Newgrounds here.

Contains examples of:

  • The Cake Is a Lie: Instead of a kingdom, the Pale Man gets a knife in his gut and is thrown out the window.
  • Checkpoint: One white dot, which serves as a restart point.
  • Death Is a Slap on the Wrist: You teleport to the last checkpoint you touched, and that's it.
  • Leap of Faith: Some of the jumps might not be safe, as the destination is off-screen. The player can zoom the display out if standing still, but it cuts into completing the game quickly.
  • Marathon Level: For a Flash game, the levels are absolutely massive — especially given that they're completely continuous with no screen transitions of any sort. The author openly stated that part of the point was to see just how big a movie file he could make each individual level.
  • Oxygen Meter: You start taking damage rapidly when it runs out.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The first golem.
  • Seahorses Are Dragons: The third golem is shaped like a sea horse, with wings. It will fly out of the water once you enter it.
  • Soft Water: If you land in water, you take no fall damage whatsoever.
  • Spikes of Doom: Some surfaces are covered in spikes, and there are also parts where spikes poke out periodically. Both kill in one hit.
  • Time Trial: You can complete individual stages, and see how fast you complete them. In case of Kongregate, you get a badge if you complete the colossus within the designated time (130, 190 and 210 seconds)
  • Underwater Level: Two levels partly take place in a plain underwater environment — where the golem is tortoise-shaped, and sea-dragon shaped.
