Grand Theft Auto: Forelli Redemption is a total conversion mod for Grand Theft Auto III created by Barcode Studia
.The mod was originally released in October of 2021 for the PC version of the game, and was subsequently followed up by releases for the iOS and Android mobile devices, the PlayStation Vitanote and even the PlayStation 2, being the first major GTA III mod to be ported to the latter. A "Reissued" version of the mod is currently in the works, which plans to add more content than the original release of the mod, such as additional missions and extra interiors.
The mod's story focuses on the Forelli crime family, specificially the Player Character Giovanni Forelli, the 26-year old son of the long-dead Don Sonny Forelli and nephew of the current Forelli boss Giorgio, who were lucky to survive the destruction of Fort Staunton in 1998. Forelli Redemption is also a P.O.V. Sequel to III, as the mod's events happen around the same time as the vanilla game's story, similar to the Episodes from Liberty City expansions for Grand Theft Auto IV.
Grand Theft Auto: Forelli Redemption provides examples of:
- The Cameo: The fight club minigame features James Earl Cash, the main protagonist of Manhunt, as one of the opponents.
- Continuity Nod: The confrontation between Giovanni and Claude takes place at the Portland Rock lighthouse, the same place where Toni Cipriani fought Massimo Torini in the final mission of Liberty City Stories.
- A Day in the Limelight: As the mod's title suggests, the story obviously focuses on the Forelli family.
- Death by Adaptation:
- Besides Salvatore Leone dying like in vanilla III, other members of the Leone family bite the dust as well, including Mickey Hamfists, Toni Cipriani, Luigi Goterelli and Joey Leone.
- While vanilla III leaves it ambiguous as to whether Claude killed Maria at the end, she is shown to be alive in this mod... only to be killed by Giovanni as she leaves the opera performance at City Hall, after the Forellis assume Claude is in the limo.
- Towards the end of the mod's story, Claude is also killed by Giovanni.
- Difficulty Levels: This mod includes two difficulty settings - Soldier (easy) and Boss (hard), which affect the difficulty of certain story missions.
- Hero of Another Story: Claude, the main protagonist of GTA III, is mentioned throughout the mod and makes a few appearances, and later dies at the hands of Giovanni.
- Klingon Promotion: The death of the high-ranking Leone crime family members leads to the remaining Leones merging with the Forelli family.
- Sequel Hook: The mod's story ends with Giovanni calling Tommy Vercetti, the man who murdered his father Sonny back in 1986.
- Shout-Out:
- The mission "Max Pain" is an obvious pun on Max Payne. The game even goes into Bullet Time during the shootout at the Bank of Liberty in said mission.
- El Burro's mission "Fair Game" is the mod's take on the mission "Fair Play" from Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. The first part of the mission involves Giovanni stealing a fast car from a racing driver before the big race, driving it to a mechanic to tamper with the car, and then taking it back. The second part of the mission involves Giovanni taking part in the race after El Burro's driver broke his arm.
- Unseen No More: Sonny's cousin Giorgio, Berkley, El Burro and King Courtney make physical appearances in the mod. Both El Burro and King Courtney had voice-only appearances in III, with El Burro only being depicted through official artwork and King Courtney making a physical appearance in Grand Theft Auto Advance, and Giorgio was only mentioned in Vice City and Vice City Stories, as was Berkley in San Andreas.
