If there’s anything we're entitled to, it's having our faces left alone. We spend our whole lives making sure our heads don't get punched or worse by saying the wrong thing to someone. But for most people, hands touching their face is the least of their concerns. The last thing anyone wants is to have a more gross or awkward body part, like the foot, shoved in their face without consent. Sometimes, though, no matter how hard we try to avoid that, it ends up there anyway.

In fiction, the trope often plays out at night or in the morning when people are trying to sleep in the same space, usually if one of them is in an awkward sleeping position. One character can't sleep because the other's feet are directly next to their face, or even worse, directly on their face. It either serves as a wake-up call, or it keeps them from sleeping entirely, with its kicking and/or odor. And the sleeping character never knows what's happening, at least not until morning mostly.

Of course, this isn't limited to just the feet, as it can just as easily be one's butt, arm, or even their own face. Other instances where this can occur include when characters are trapped in a confined or tight space, or when a character does it deliberately during a fight or a scuffle, whether it's a shove or a kick. Pretty much always is this trope Played for Laughs, and is used the most in family-themed media — much like another certain trope involving feet, since kids tend to find the concept humorous.

Not to be confused with Cruelty by Feet, in which one's foot is intentionally used to hurt someone who is powerless, in a brutal, humiliating manner. It can also overlap with Dismissive Kick or its Sister Trope Someone's Touching My Butt, although the humor there stems mainly from the ambiguity in a situation (mainly in the dark), along with the occasional Double Entendre, instead of focusing on the reaction one has when an unwanted body part is all up in their space.
