The Ardygun Family

    In General
A family of "Trailers", a catch-all term in Super Robot Wars W referring to people who are hired to perform any duty in space other than salvage and combat (but that won't stop them from doing either if the job calls for it), the Ardyguns operate aboard their spaceship Valstork. They are close associates and friends of Lowe Gear and the "Junk Guild".
  • Ancestral Weapon: The Valstork and Valhawk were handed down generation after generation in the Ardygun family, with no one knowing where it really comes from. It was Blessfield who built them, with some help from extraterrestrials after being sent back in time 15 billion years ago into the previous universe.
  • Badass Family: They're a tightly knit family who work together to make their Space Trucker business work and fight off any threat they come across, either helping run the Valstork or protecting it as pilots.
  • Combining Mecha: The "Valhawk" is a Transforming Mecha that is powered by a "Proton Drive" and is capable of combining with the Valstork to form the "Valguard". When "Applicant" of the Database defects to Neue Wärter, the Valguard can combine with Aria's "Arm Arcus" and Applicant's "Arm Stoma" to become the "Valzacard".
  • Family Business: Every member of the family helps run the Trailer family business by making sure the Valstork runs smoothly.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Like a lot of Trailers, they're often assumed to be opportunistic Space Pirates who would do anything for money, but they have a strict moral code.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Kazuma mentions they're constantly on the verge of bankruptcy for as long as he can remember.
  • Space Trucker: They're all "Trailers", which basically means they roam all over space doing all kinds of odd jobs, usually involving transporting people or things.

Main protagonist of W, 16-year-old Kazuma is the only son of Blessfield Ardygun. An extremely Hot-Blooded boy, Kazuma is determined to get rid of the common stereotype that Trailers are no different than Space Pirates, alongside making a name for himself as a Trailer, like his father has in his youth. On Blessfield's request, Kazuma writes in a journal daily, recording all of the events that have transpired. When the Earth Sphere is threatened by multiple extraterrestrial prescenes, Kazuma and his family are recruited by the "Gutsy Geoid Guard", the "Space Knights" and the "Preventers", with assistance from the "Photon Reasearch Institute", "Mithril" and the "Nergal Heavy Industries", to form "Wärter". Unfortunately, the group is disbanded following an encounter with Inference and the mysterious Database.

Six months later, He joined with the mercenary "Serpent Tail", going by the alias "Kite". "Neue Wärter" is reorganized from the remnants of Wärter, as a response to multiple events, such as the "Bloody Valentine Incident", the invasion of the Radam and the threat of the Evoluders. Kazuma rejoins his former allies with Serpent Tail and newcomers Junk Guild and the Archangel battleship, alongside defectors "Regulate" and Aria Advance of the Database.

Kazuma begins using the "Valhawk", a Transforming Mecha with his younger sister Mihiro serving as his co-pilot. The machine is powered by a "Proton Drive" and is capable of combining with other machines to become the "Valguard" and "Valzacard".

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After the Time Skip, he survives but blames himself for his father's sacrifice and is so ashamed to face his family that he takes up the alias "Kite" and wanders off, working as a pilot-for-hire but only for transport and refusing to get into combat. It's not until he accidentally reunites with his family that he comes to his senses.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: The Valzacard is only usable near the end of part two of W. Even if the player doesn't bother to upgrade the Valhawk, whose upgrades carry over to the Valzacard, it's still one of the strongest units towards the end of the game.
  • Armed Legs: The Valhawk has a pair of "Heat Edge" spikes on top of its feet that form the tip of its nose when it transforms into its "Air Force" mode. It uses them in its "Beam Shot Launcher" and "Ray Blade" attacks, and in the latter, the Heat Edge is ignited.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: At one point, it's suggested that Kazuma also attend school alongside the likes of Sousuke and Heero, but he declines due to feeling it would be more useful for him to train his skill as a pilot. Unluckily for him, Melissa Mao and Lucrezia Noin take him up on this. In addition, much later he realises to his annoyance that those who actually went to school have found girlfriends, belated realising that due to him only staying aboard the Valstork he has no chances to meet anybody (and the various cute girls who make up the Neue Wärter are mostly already in relationships).
  • Berserk Button: He's really not a fan of Space Pirates and how they give Trailers a bad name and due to his mother Yumi being killed during a pirate attack. Implying that Trailers are a form of pirates is an easy way to set off his Hair-Trigger Temper.
  • BFS: Valzacard's "Dimension Breaker", where it wields the Arm Arcus in its "Sword Mode" as a sword hilt to generate a blade of crystal energy. The power of the attack is amplified by Regulate, which allows it to break apart the walls of dimensions.
  • Big Brother Mentor: To Kira Yamato, despite being roughly the same age. Kazuma is, among other things, a very experienced and capable pilot versus Kira who had only just fallen into the Gundam's cockpit. Much to Kira's embarrassment, Kazuma is also surprisingly good at chatting up girls like Flay, which leads Kira to asking him for advice. For his part, Kazuma settles into the role of a mentor fairly easily, since he's used to looking after others due to being responsible for Mihiro growing up.
  • Book Dumb: He never went to school and was raised in space by his family, so his academic knowledge is quite poor.
  • Brother–Sister Team: With Mihiro. She acts as his support while he does the actual piloting of the Valhawk. Mihiro provides up-to-date data, Kazuma uses that data to execute manoeuvres. Because they're so close, the official gag manga even describes them as "the brocon/siscon duo".
  • Butt-Monkey: The W Yonkomas don't treat him kindly.
  • Captain's Log: He's in charge of maintaining the log for the Valstork, which allows the audience to hear his thoughts and a convenient summary of events at the start of most missions. He lampshades that his father is the one who should be doing it, since he's not the actual captain. After the Time Skip, it gets taken over by Mihiro when he's on his self-exile.
  • Chef of Iron: Post-Time Skip, the first thing he's asked to do after his return to the Valstork is to cook for the crew, because he was the most experienced chef of the crew.
  • Chick Magnet: Ironically, despite not being in a relationship throughout W, he's really good at talking with the girls of Neue Wärter, especially post-Time Skip. Something of a subversion though because not many of them really fall in love with him.
  • Combination Attack: "Proton Cannon Focus", where the Valhawk uses the "Dual Proton Cannons" of the Valstork to unleash a Wave-Motion Gun. In essence, three of the four attacks of the Valzacard are also this, since they use the Arm Arcus and Arm Stoma.
  • Covert Pervert: He doesn't hit or perv on women despite his loneliness, but when he hears Mao and Testarossa are having a mock battle and the loser has to go Streaking, he tries to skip on training with Noin so he can watch.
  • Expy: The Valhawk seems to be an expy of the R-1 and by extension, to the Zeta Gundam. Similar weapons, especially to the latter (Beam Rifle, Vulcans, Ley Sabers), aesthetics and the ability to transform into a plane show obvious inspiration, but the addition of the Heat Edges and having no specialized super-pilot systems and relying on the pilot's skill alone make it different.
    • Compare the Valzacard to the Super Robot Type-X Altered "Banpreios"; bonus points for the fact that at the end of each unit's respective game, neither one has unlocked its true capabilities yet.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: His abrasive nature and Hair-Trigger Temper get on the bad side of a lot of characters, but he tends to befriend them during the actual missions where he proves his worth in battle (and can channel his temper into the actual enemies).
  • Forklift Fu: In one early mission, Kazuma fights a Tekkaman with an industrial power loader, and somehow doesn't die instantly.
  • Generation Xerox: Post-Time Skip Kazuma looks like a younger, non-Perma-Stubble version of Blessfield. Lampshaded by the multiple members of Neue Wärter.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He's pretty temperamental and easy to enrage, especially in the first half. One of his first scenes has him almost punch Duo just for being snarked at.
  • Has a Type: He's attracted to older women like Mao and Noin and also says he likes women that pack "big guns" like Minato and Mikoto.
  • Heroic BSoD: The loss of his father was enough for Kazuma to leave his family during the Time Skip.
  • Hot-Blooded: Actually, Kazuma learns to be this over the course of W. Near the beginning, he's overwhelmed by the attitudes of other characters like Guy Shishioh, Kouji Kabuto, and Jiro Yamada Gai Daigoji; by the end, he's on par with the best of them.
  • Humongous Mecha: The Valhawk is roughly a 30-meter-tall, medium-sized machine, but the Valzacard towers at over 212 meters, making it one of the largest original mecha in SRW history. By contrast, the Geant Chevalier is 110 meters long, and more than half of its length is its lance-like BFS.
  • Instant Runes: Part of the Valzacard's EXA Nova Shoot Over's "Dynamic Kill" animation.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: He's very protective of Mihiro, to the point of being overzealous at times, such as when he accused D-Boy of being a paedophile when he mistook her for his own little sister Miyuki.
  • Jack of All Stats: The Valhawk is fairly mobile, but not extraordinarily powerful (though on par with other Real Robots), but strong enough to be effective at all ranges, has all three basic defensive abilities and has the transformable Air Force mode for added movement. While not great in any aspect, unlike most units in W, it has no real weaknesses.
  • Just a Kid: It's often dismissed as just a kid in the first half of the game by other characters, much to his irritation.
  • Leitmotif: "Bullet Striker" (pre-Time Skip), "Sail On Future" (post-Time Skip) and "Just One Chance" (during Valzacard's EXA Nova Shoot Over)
  • Magikarp Power: The Valhawk quickly gets outclassed by numerous stronger units, with its saving grace its upgrades being able to carryover to the Valguard, which receives a boost in power and is matched up with many units, until the later parts of the Time Skip. Once the Valzacard is available, it's one of the best units in the game.
  • Middle Child Syndrome: He's a middle child and the only male in his family, which contributes to the fact that he feels unappreciated by his father, who assigns more responsibility to his older sisters and dotes on Mihiro.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: His sprite always has a Band-Aid on his cheek, as a visual cue to him being a reckless Hot-Blooded Idiot Hero.
  • The Power of Love: In this case, familial love; however, this leads to Unlucky Everydude (see below).
  • Resentful Outnumbered Sibling: He's a bit frustrated at having to grow up as the only boy among 3 sisters.
  • Running Gag: The inability of Kazuma to get a date or girlfriend, in spite of being able to say some very flattering things to the girls of Neue Wärter.
  • Ship Tease: Has some with Ryoko Subaru and Flay Alster, to the point where Kira asks him for tips to deal with the latter.
  • Swords Akimbo: In the Valhawk's Ray Blade attack, it uses one of this weapon, but follows up with an additional Ray Blade stored in its knee for Dual Wielding.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Deliveres one to Natarle Badigruel after she reappears as captain of the Dominion battleship
  • There Will Be Toilet Paper: Judging by the bandage on his face, Kazuma consistently cuts himself while shaving in the exact same spot throughout the entire 21-month span of W.
  • Took a Level in Badass: At the beginning of the story, where he's harassed by his family for wasting ammo unnecessarily and for every nick and scratch that the Valhawk suffers, to the point of relying on his copilot-slash-sister Mihiro for constant corrections on both targetting and manoeuvring. After the Time Skip, he's become an Ace Pilot due to his experience with such a fast mech giving him skills tremendous enough to impress, and join, a seasoned mercenary group, to the point of repeating the same dodging patterns on a civilian transport ship! As Horis Horion points out after Kazuma rejoins the Valstork, he "left as a child, but returned as a man".
  • Training from Hell: His dad assigns him to be trained at the hands of Melissa Mao and Lucrezia Noin early in the story, which starts with them literally throwing him out of bed early in the morning. The training is so strenuous that he picks up a part-time job just so he has an excuse to get away from them.
  • Unlucky Everydude: Kazuma has the dubious honour of being the first original SRW character to have the "Love" Spirit Command, yet not be in a relationship. He spends a good portion of W bemoaning this, while also realising it was his own fault because he hadn't realised until too late that he can't find a girlfriend if he doesn't go out to meet new people.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Kazuma's stats are slightly above average for a real robot pilot; unfortunately, he has no stat-increasing abilities nor does the Valhawk have a unique ability to cover them. However, he makes up for it by having the best native skill set of any series protagonist in the game ("Sword Cut" note , "Gun Down" note , "Shield" note , "Support Attack" note , "Support Defend" note  and "Combo Attack" note ). You can invoke this by pumping up his "Skill" stat to make him even more of a defensive powerhouse, being untouchable due solely to outclassing basically anything in the game.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: He has Middle Child Syndrome and feels he's The Un-Favourite of the family due to his father constantly criticising him or treating him like a fool. This makes him act more recklessly in order to try to prove himself, which earns him more criticism, forming a vicious cycle.

    Blessfield Ardygun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blessfieldardygun.png

A legendary Trailer, who had many run-ins with law enforcement agents such as Heinrich Freeman and Kotaro Taiga, 45-year-old Blessfield at one point clashed with Taiga over the same woman named Yumi, who would become Blessfield's wife. Since then, Blessfield has fathered four children: Shihomi, Akane, Kazuma and Mihiro. Known as "the legendary Trailer", his reputation has garnered him the nickname "Hawkeye".

  • Accidental Time Travel: When performing his Heroic Sacrifice to save Kazuma, his Boson Jump sends him into a 15 billion years into the past, leaving him stranded there with no way to get back to his family. This led to the events that caused the creation of the Database, which are the reason he had to perform a Heroic Sacrifice in the first place.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Blessfield is from Mars, and like all Martians, he has the ability to initiate "Boson Jump", which allows instantaneously travel through space and time with the help of "Chulip Crystals". In many cases, the "Jumper" may even wind up going backwards through time. During a major battle with Inference and the Database, Blessfield instinctively protects Kazuma from an explosion by using a Boson Jump, but accidentally sends himself back 15 billion years into the past (shortly before the Big Crunch that proceeded the Big Bang that created the W universe). Stranded, Blessfield nearly loses all hope until a chance meeting with an ancient civilization called the "E's", teaching him the importance of memories. Working alongside them, Blessfield creates the "Knowledge Records" and the "Record Plant", inevitably bringing the Database to life. The Valstork would be his final legacy, intended to be handed down to his ancestors in the future, 15 billion years later.
  • Big Good: Shares this with Taiga; this traits is carried on well after his apparent death in the form of Applicant.
  • The Captain: He's the captain and ultimate authority on the Valstork.
  • Chick Magnet: Some of the female characters in W comment on how his roguish good looks, even though the majority are much younger than he is.
  • Connected All Along: He has an Old Friend with higher-ups in a lot of unfluential factions in the Earth Sphere, like Freeman and Taiga.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's pretty jovial for his age and is able to talk with the youngster captain Yurika while clearly understanding all her slang and mannerisms.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Blessfield knew that sooner or later the Database will become a threat to other civilizations and cultures in the new universe, thus created two failsafes - the first was to copy his personality and a part of his mind into Applicant, making him the "overseer" of the Database in secret, while the second was to create the Valstork with the ability to combine with the Arm units, provided that two Database personalities "break down" from the rest of them.
  • Crutch Character: Blessfield helms the Valstork with three other characters, meaning an exceptionally large list of Spirit Commands to use, a MAP weapon for the Valstork, good stats and Blessfield's own superb set of Spirit Commands surprisingly filled with a lot of them that are usually earned late-game. He's likely one of the best battleship commanders in Super Robot Wars and for good reason: he's only playable in the first part of W; by the second part, the Valstork by itself is useless when it can combine with the Valhawk to form the more powerful Valguard, and he's replaced by Kazuma, who gets the best list of Spirit Commands to use with six pilots when the Valzacard is available.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: He finds his "title" as "Hawkeye" to be embarrassing, but Kazuma doesn't find out why until halfway through the story: It's not because he has a keen aim or judgement, as most people assume, but because he has a keen eye for women, as he fell in love for a beauty like Yumi before he even found out what she looked like, since he always wore a hood.
  • Fake Special Attack: Supposedly, Blessfield has 2000 special techniques, but they're all mundane and basic. Some examples include "Hiding in the Clouds", "Kidnapping", "Reversed Grudge" and "Playing Dead".
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He sacrifices himself to save Kazuma during a climatic battle against the Database. He technically didn't die, as he used his Boson Jump ability to get away, but sent himself billions of years into the past, ensuring that he'd never see his family again anyway.
  • In-Series Nickname: His name is Blessfield, but he insists on being called Bless.
  • Leitmotif: "Departure ~ To the Endless Sea of Stars".
  • Lovable Rogue: He still has a lot of dirty tricks up his sleeve from his days as a Space Pirate, but tends to use them to help and save others and and he often helps people he runs into, even when they're not paying him.
  • Love at First Sight: Describes how he was dumbstruck by Yumi from the very first time that he saw her.
  • Odd Name Out: He's the only member of his family that has a Western first name, the rest of the family are Japanese-named.
  • Old Shame: He's not proud of his actions as a Space Pirate when he was young and tries to keep it a secret from his children.
  • The Patriarch: He's the male head of the Ardygun family.
  • Red Baron: He is known as "Hawkeye", and his acquaintances from the past refer to him by that name. Even characters like Duo Maxwell have heard of him, and are curious if he lives up to his legend.
  • Reformed Criminal: He used to be an actual hardcore Space Pirate based on Mars until he met Yumi and reformed his ways, going legit as a Trailer.
  • Supreme Chef: He's a really talented cook, winning over a suspicious Duo just by cooking for him once. It's implied that this is a common tactic of his to win over clients.

    Mihiro Ardygun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7411e682b72c2f25fe1d144f4db4b424.jpg
Click here to see her post-Time Skip

The youngest daughter of the Ardygun family, 10-year-old Mihiro is the co-pilot of the Valhawk, who assists with aiming and evasive programs. After the death of their mother Yumi, Kazuma was the one to take care of her, as the rest of the family was too busy with their Trailer duties. She's very attached to her older brother.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Downplayed. Kazuma adores Mihiro, and she him, but he sometimes finds it annoying how much she nags him for his Hair-Trigger Temper.
  • Big Brother Worship: Understandably, as Kazuma was the one who looked after her following the death of their mother Yumi, so she's extremely attached to him. The official gag manga even goes so far as to label the pair "the brocon (brother complex) siscon (sister complex) combination". Part of the reason she's so torn up when she discovers he's actually alive post-time skip is because she wonders why he wouldn't come back to her.
  • Brother–Sister Team: For the first part of the game, she pilots the Valhawk alongside her brother.
  • Bootstrapped Leitmotif: When she pilots the Valhawk by herself, she uses her sister Shihomi's Leitmotif.
  • Captain's Log: Takes over recording a Captain's Log for the ship during the period of time he's gone after the Time Skip.
  • Idiot Hair: She is actually pretty smart though.
  • Little Miss Badass: Since Kazuma wasn't with them, Mihiro had to use the Valhawk alone to defend the Valstork against the Radam. She eventually gets herself into a mess when fighting a group of Moebius mobile armors because she didn't want to kill fellow human beings.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: She is 11 after the Time Skip, and as Kazuma was missing during that time she has had to pull her weight more than before. For example, while previously she was simply Kazuma's support on the Valhawk, she has had to learn how to pilot it herself.
  • Took a Level in Badass: With Kazuma missing during the Time Skip, Mihiro took the time to learn how to pilot the Valhawk herself. She is even able to fight off some enemies, but she's woefully inexperienced compared to Kazuma.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She's understandably tremendously upset when she realises that Kazuma is alive and operating under the false name "Kite", but after slapping him after his return she's just glad to have him back.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite her young age, she's much wiser and emotionally mature than her Hot-Blooded older brother, often being the one to rein him in if he gets too heated.

    Shihomi Ardygun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shihomi.png

The eldest Ardygun child, 22-year-old Shihomi serves as the main operator of the Valstork.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's usually a nurturing Team Mom and The Ever-Calm, but she's said to be quite scary the few times she does get angry, which is why everyone in the family tries their best to avoid her wrath. This is better exemplified when Kazuma returns from his self-exile. While she seems her usual calm self at first, her method of forgiving him is to slap him five times, one for their father, one for the family as a whole, one for their missing friends, one for herself and one for Carret since he's too short to reach his face. She then allows Akane and Mihiro to give him a punch of their own too.
  • Bridge Bunny: Alongside Akane and Horis, she acts as one of these for the first half of the game. As the eldest, she is also effectively the Number Two to their father Bless.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Kurz is appreciative of how well-endowed she is. She apparently inherited her mother's curves, which is implied to exacerbate Akane's A-Cup Angst.
  • The Captain: After Blessfield's disappearance Post-Time Skip, she becomes the captain of the Valstork and new head of the family.
  • Dude Magnet: A lot of the passengers that the Valstork end up being attracted to her, such as an early missing having Kurz fantasising about seeing her in just an apron.
  • The Ever-Calm: She is always the calm and composed voice of reason in the family. According to her family, it's rare to see her upset, and when she does it's a case of OOC Is Serious Business.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: She's said to be an excellent judge of character, with the family trusting her judgment when it comes to some of the more suspicious and unstable characters that join the Valstork, like D-Boy and Shinya.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She always has her eyes closed, making it look like she always has a content expression. According to her family, she only opens her eyes when she's really angry. Though according to one Yonkoma, she also opens them when deep in thought.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She's a Girly Girl, almost as good in the kitchen as her father is, in contrast to her tomboy sister Akane, who's a Lethal Chef. Horis bemoans after the Time Skip that when she's too busy to cook, the crew is stuck having Akane as the main chef. However, it's mentioned that Bless and Kazuma are actually better cooks than her.
  • Generation Xerox: People who know her mother often talk about how similar the two are, in both appearance and personality.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Slapped Kazuma when he was confused after realizing that Applicant might be their father, reminding that even if that's true, he's still their enemy and is trying to kill them.
  • Iron Lady: After the Time Skip, she becomes less emotional in order to better fuffil her role as captain of the Valstork and keep her family in line.
  • Leitmotif: "Determination ~ Pride and Memory in the Heart", once she takes over the Valstork.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Her long hair is a visual cue that she's the feminine sister in the Ardygun family, contrasting with Akane's Boyish Short Hair.
  • Money Dumb: While she's usually one of the most mature members of the family, she's said to have a tendency to overspend when shopping, racking up quite the tab during the family's stay at GGG Island. One mission has her topping up Sousuke into being her Human Pack Mule, and even he has trouble handling it.
  • The Smart Girl: She's considered the brains of the family, due to her calm demeanour, keen judgement and talent at handling the sensors and coms of the ship.
  • Team Mom: Played With. Following the death of their mother, Shihomi was the oldest female presence on the ship and plays the role by looking after her younger siblings.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: Is mentioned to have a talent for sewing, fitting with her being a Girly Girl.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the Girly Girl that has several traditional feminine traits that contrast with her tomboyish sister Akane.
  • You Are in Command Now: As the eldest sister, she has to step up and become the new head of the family after her father is gone, taking charge of the Family Business and becoming The Captain of the Valstork.

    Akane Ardygun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akaneardygun.png

The second oldest daughter of the Ardygun family, 20-year-old Akane is a rather cheerful, but stern woman. Aboard the Valstork, she is the weapons operator.

  • A-Cup Angst: Kazuma and Horis often make disparaging remarks about her washboard figure. She's very self-conscious over it, especially since her mother and older sister have buxom figures.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Her family refers to her as "Kanny".
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her short hair is a visual cue that she's the tomboyish sister in the Ardygun family, contrasting with Shihomi's long hair.
  • Bridge Bunny: Her role throughout the game. As the weapons operator, she is in charge of targeting the Valstork's weapons as well as identifying incoming units.
  • Butt-Monkey: She's often the butt of jokes thanks to her gullible personality and lacking chest being Running Gags during the story.
  • Fangirl: She's a massive fan of Uppo-kun; she even has a hug pillow (or at least, a large stuffed animal version) of it. This gets played with as Akane's nearly retcons the appearance of EI-13, the Zonder based off of Uppo-kun. Then Sōsuke Sagara shows up as "Bonta-kun" and ruins the moment.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She considers it an embarrassing secret due to her tomboy attitude, but she does have some stuffed animals that she uses as a hug pillow in her room.
  • Has a Type: She claims to prefer "tough" men, like wrestlers and Hot-Blooded men. She even gets a crush on Goldy Marg.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: She's known for being a crackshot, which is why she's in charge of handling the Valstork's gunnery system during battles.
  • Lethal Chef: Kazuma and Horis often bemoan her cooking due to her putting mayonnaise on everything she cooks. The first thing Horis asks of Kazuma post-Time Skip is to replace her as chef of the Valstork.
  • Super Gullible: Her gullible personality makes her an easy target for Horis' teasing, with him and others often fooling her with outrageous stories or Blatant Lies.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's a Tomboy who has several traditional boyish traits that contrast with her feminine elder sister Shihomi.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's the sister with boyish short hair and a hot temper, and she's stated to serve as the ship's gunner, but Akane is also shown to have a soft spot for cute mascot characters and plush animal pillows.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She drowns every kind of food in mayonnaise.
  • Tsundere: Is implied to be attracted to Horis and is always incensed that he keeps teasing and messing with her. Calling him stupid might as well be her Catchphrase.

    Horis Horian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/horis.png

Twenty-four-year-old Horis is currently employed by the Ardygun family as a freelancer. Knowledgeable about many things, he is the navigational operator of the Valstork and has excellent controls with the battleship.

  • Alliterative Name: Horis Horian.
  • Becoming the Mask: He was dispatched to keep an eye on the Ardygun family, as they were well-known enough to be a potential source of concern to various factions such as the Organization of Zodiac and the like. He decides that he quite likes the Ardygun family, becoming especially fond of Akane.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's always making quips, often at the expense of others (usually Akane or Kazuma).
  • Family of Choice: He's so close to the Ardygun's he's considered an honorary member of the family. He sometimes jokes that someday he'll make it official by marrying one of the daughters. This happens in the finale when he marries Akane.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it "Horian", "Horion" or "Horaian"? While the latter is closest to the katakana spelling of his name, it sounds phonetically odd. Most players stick with either "Horian" or "Horion."
  • Loving Bully: He picks on Akane, trying to trick her into thinking she's misspoken or mixed up expressions and pointedly suggesting he could marry any of the other Ardygan daughters but her. Yet she's the one he proposes to eventually.
  • The Mole: Horis is actually an intelligence operative from the Organization of Zodiac, who infiltrated the Valstork to investigate its capabilities and technology, but decided to stay behind rather than report to his superiors after growing too attached and fond of the Ardygun family and how well they treated him.
  • Official Couple: In the ending, he proposes to Akane; she accepts.

    Carret
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carret.png

A general-purpose robot on the Valstork, Carret acts as the communications and signal analysis officer.

  • Black Box: Carret contains data on the origins of the Valstork.
  • Captain Ersatz: Of the Haro and Ropet.
  • Robot Maid: He does the cooking, cleaning, laundry and other small chores in the Valstork.
  • Robot Buddy: He's the support robot made alongside the Valstork to help run the ship, with the rest of the Ardyguns considering him part of the family.

    Yumi Ardygun
Blessfield's wife and the mother of all his children.

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: She was The Heart of the Ardyguns, and nobody has anything bad to say about her, to make her death as tragic as possible.
  • In the Hood: She was infamous for always wearing a hood when she was a young Trailer. According to Bless, it was due to her shyness.
  • Red Baron: She was known as "The Hooded Trailer" back when she was active, due to wearing a hood all the time.
  • Posthumous Character: She's been dead for 10 years by the time the story begins having been killed during a pirate attack, but is frequently discussed by the rest of the family, and her absence is still felt within the family's dynamics.

The Database

    In General
The "Scribes of Knowledge", more commonly referred to as the Database, they are the main antagonists of Super Robot Wars W.

Led by "Inference", with "Critic", "Applicant" and "Regulate" as his advisers, and Aria Advance as their field commander, the Database seek to go from civilization to civilization, assimilating all the knowledge each possess, then eliminate them to make that knowledge rarer and more valuable.

Tropes associated with multiple characters of the Database:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot
    • Beings created by the Precursors of the previous universe to store all knowledge and let their civilizations survive in some fashion? Well, of course they won't turn evil!
    • Critic is moreso than other members of the Database: it was he who suggested they destroy the recorded civilizations. Secondly, Critic is the only Database individual created without emotions or a personality.
  • Captain Ersatz: An artificial intelligence that wishes to control all known information in the universe, and kill billions to keep that knowledge secret. Are we talking about the Database or Brainiac?
  • The Dreaded: Despite the Evil Versus Evil nature of enemy factions in W, all are deathly fearful of the Database, with good reason.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Inference and Applicant in the second half of the final scenario of a New Game Plus, with Applicant surviving his Heroic Sacrifice and Inference fully switching sides instead of dying and embracing evil respectively.
  • Evil Twin: With the exception of Critic, the Database is physically and mentally identical to Blessfield, Yumi, Mihiro, and Kazuma Ardygun barring some cosmetic anomalies. Applicant, Regulate, and Aria eventually defect as a result of their templates as Bless, Yumi, and Mihiro bleeding through, but Inference only has a change of heart in a New Game Plus — otherwise, him regressing into Kazuma's personality just drives him completely insane.
  • Identical Stranger: With the exception of Aria and Critic, the Database characters are modelled after the Ardygun family - Inference to Kazuma, Applicant to Blessfield, and Regulate to Yumi.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Inference was taught the importance of keeping memories, which is why he and the database record knowledge of civilizations. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way Critic came to reason that the recorded knowledge gains more value the scarcer it becomes, leading the Database to exterminate civilizations after recording them.
  • Musical Spoiler: If you listen closely, the Database Leitmotif "Eternal Memory" is a rearrangement of Kazuma's "Bullet Striker". Now consider what Inference is to Kazuma.
  • Stable Time Loop: They were originally created to seek out and preserve all knowledge in the universe by a civilization called the E's of the previous universe, who were at that point waiting for the Big Crunch to occur, the Database were inspired to do so by Blessfield Ardygun, teaching them the importance of memories, after he was thrown back in time 15 billion years into the past during a battle with the Database, the very same group he helped create.
  • We Wait: They lie in wait for eight months before commencing their plan.

    Inference

The commander of the Record Plant, Inference is the leader of the Database, piloting the "Scentia". Calm and collected, he has an unusual tendency to act irrationally whenever angered.

    Aria Advance
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aria.png

With a physical appearance 16 year-old, Aria is one of the frontline commanders of the Database, piloting a custom Arm Arcus. She sees Applicant as a paternal figure, even addressing him as "papa". Due to the mechanical nature of the Database, Aria is socially inept at establishing relationships, though during her encounters with Mihiro, she grows oddly attached and fond of her, yet cold and callous towards Kazuma.

  • Beam Spam: Arm Arcus' "Totoum Schlopetum", combined with a Wave-Motion Gun at the end. The attack features both over-the-shoulder and hip-mounted cannons, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Freedom's "Hi-MAT Full Burst" attack.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Arm Arcus' "Luna Gladius", with a Gory Discretion Shot.
  • Evil Laugh: She engages in this on several occasions, most often when facing Kazuma.
  • Foreshadowing: It's hard to notice, but during one scenario where Aria is forced to fight alongside Neue Wärter, notice how Aria's stats and Spirit Commands are identical to Kazuma. This is long before The Reveal she is his opposite sex personality clone.
  • The Heavy: She's the field commander for the Database, thus is the one who confronts the protagonists the most from the early portions of the story, while the other members only become active after the Time Skip.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She defects from the Databse alongside Regulate late into the story.
  • Kill and Replace: Her "objective" in her first few appearances is to kill Kazuma so she can take his spot in the Ardygun family.
  • Leitmotif: "Soul Stranger"
  • Me's a Crowd: The Arm Arcus can split itself into five solid copies for short durations during its attacks. Presumably, this ability is integral to how it transforms into the Valzacard's sword and bow, considering the tremendous difference in size between the two.
  • No Social Skills: Aria was trained for combat, and the fact that the Database makes use of machines means that she's never had reason to learn how to communicate with people. This causes her to feel confusion over, for example, feeling a sense of attachment to Mihiro.
  • Opposite-Sex Clone: Unlike the other Database characters, Aria is a clone of Kazuma, more specifically a "personality clone" of him. This explains why she feels more affectionate for Mihiro and despises Kazuma, because she wishes to be rid of him so she can replace him in the Ardygun family.
  • Send in the Clones: Male clones of Aria called "Deceiver" are made to pilot mass-produced versions of the Arm Arcus and Arm Stora after Aria and Regulate defect.
  • Ship Sinking: When Kazuma notes that Aria is "kind of cute", Regulate steps in and very insistently observes she hopes that Kazuma and Aria will get along "as brother and sister".
  • Wave-Motion Tuning Fork: A literal examples, as the blades of the Arm Arcus look like tuning forks which double for melee use.

    Applicant

The one in charge of managing the Database, Applicant uses the "Valarm" first before replacing it with the Arm Stoma.

    Regulate
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/regulate.png

Acting as an enforcer for the Database, Regulate heads to fight in the frontlines to support Applicant.

  • Foil: To Applicant, as they always fight alongside one another. More or less a Battle Couple, since she's based on Blessfield's wife Yumi.
  • Only Sane Woman: Her designated role, hence a regulator. When she was aware there was something wrong with the Database's methodology, she defects along with Aria.
  • Team Mom: Post-Heel–Face Turn, Regulate develops a deep maternal personality.

    Critic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/critic.png

An advisor for Inference, Critic endorses his actions and the Database's. However, his personality often clashes for playing second fiddle to Inference, thus is often suspected by other members of the Database to have ulterior motives.

  • The Dragon: He serves as Inference's main advisor and right-hand man. In reality he's just manipulating him for his own goals, as he's the one who really wants to destroy the recorded civilizations.
  • Leitmotif: "Eternal Memory", if he is the Final Boss.
  • Treacherous Advisor: He's in charge of "making critical decisions" based on the collected data and advising Inference but his advice is treacherous and he manipulates him by taking advantage of his strong emotions.
  • True Final Boss: On New Game Plus, he succesfully betrays Inference, becoming the Final Boss of the game.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: In the final scenario of New Game Plus, Critic reveals he was only keeping Inference around because he didn't know how to control the Sapientia.
