Luggy is a 2016 Iranian feature-length animated film distributed by Fantastic Films International, and animated as a coproduction between Aran and Thought Frame Animation Studios.
Luggy is a guitar case owned by a musician who, one day, sets off to the airport for a flight to a music festival. While waiting at the airport, Luggy accepts an invitation to see a bag band perform… only for the performance to be busted, and the musicians, and Luggy, to be thrown into lost luggage jail. Luggy then spends the rest of the movie figuring out a way to escape, reunite with her master, and overcome the airport’s nefarious janitor.
Tropes in Luggy include:
- Air-Vent Passageway: This is how the bags escape the back room; the Fat Comic Relief bag can only barely manage to squeeze through.
- Animate Inanimate Object: The premise of the movie revolves around luggage bags secretly being alive, a la the toys in Toy Story or the appliances in The Brave Little Toaster.
- Artistic License – Music: The bag band has a miniature electric guitar which somehow sounds exactly like a real one, despite pitch being inversely proportional to the length of the string,
- Bannister Slide: The rebel bag slides down the bannister of an escalator at one point; the cleaner tries to pursue him, but ends up falling off.
- Chekhov's Gun: While the bags sneak through the airport, the oversized one messes with a pay phone and ends up ripping the cord out of the holder. Luggy later uses the phone to take out the cleaner.
- Creative Closing Credits: The end credits are displayed over rug-like fabric patterns.
- Dance Party Ending: Courtesy of the bag band being allowed to perform again.
- Ending Theme: “Freedom”, which starts off being played by the bag band before it transitions to playing over the credits.
- Everybody Calls Him "Barkeep": The rather poor English dub produces this effect with the airport’s cleaner.Fat bag: It was not me, it was Cleaner!
- Eye on a Stalk: The purple bag has her eyes on her handle, in a manner which greatly resembles these.
- Fat Comic Relief: One particularly large and bulging bag serves as this, getting stuck in an Air-Vent Passageway for instance.
- Faux Manchu: A certain Chinese bag who keeps the lost luggage band imprisoned and prevents them from playing music looks a great deal like Fu Manchu.
- Flynning: The leader bag and the cleaner “swordfight” with metal rods in the movie’s climax, with the fighting being about 90% this.
- Handy Mouth: Near the beginning of the movie, two bags in the warehouse, who lack the straps that are commonly used as arms, were playing a game involving metal balls by pushing the balls around with sticks held in their mouths.
- I Choose to Stay: Rather than departing on the flight with her master, Luggy decided to stay in the airport and join the now-freed band.
- Improvised Weapon: The cleaner and the leader of the bags get into a “swordfight” wielding random metal rods.
- "I Want" Song: Luggy gets a fairly inane one about wanting to help everyone else in the world but knowing this is unrealistic; according to the credits, it’s called “Dreams”.
- A Lizard Named "Liz": Luggy is a piece of luggage.
- The Masquerade: The film never clarifies how the interactions between bags and humans are handled; the opening implies that the bags hide their sentience a la The Brave Little Toaster, but the cleaner is aware that the bags are alive without this being regarded as unusual, and the rebel bag can be seen dashing around the airport with no regard for any humans seeing him.
- Mook Chivalry: A rare heroic example; when the bags confront the cleaner in the climax, they attack him one-by-one instead of all at once; this almost ends up getting them defeated.
- No Music Allowed: For an unknown reason, two bags (one of them a Fu Manchu parody) don’t like music in the airport, and imprison the Lost Luggage Band to stop them from playing.
- Protagonist Title: The movie has one.
- Regional Riff: Some stereotypical Chinese music plays when the Fu Manchu bag is introduced.
- Rouge Angles of Satin: The credits have grammatical errors and messed-up capitalization; the “Music” section alone contains references to a “trompet”, “contre bass”, and “setar”, as well as the movie’s “tittle song”, and another song named “Goodby”.
- Running Gag: Lily swinging from hanging lamps.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Luggy is pink, has eyelashes, visible lips, heart-shaped zipper pulls, and… oh yeah, those two front pockets look like breasts.
- Tied Up on the Phone: The cleaner is defeated when Luggy takes the cord of a pay phone that has been torn off its stand earlier, tied one end to the cleaner’s vehicle, gets the other end wrapped around his ankle, and sends the vehicle rolling away.
- Too Many Mouths: The alien-esque purple bag has a mouth on each of the pockets running down her front- three in all.
- Unconventional Vehicle Chase: At one point in the film, we get a chase between the cleaner on his ride-on floor sweeper, and the rebel bag on a motorized skateboard.
- The Wrong Way on the Escalator: The rebel bag manages to down an up escalator via a Banister Slide.
