MODE

The MODE function returns the most frequently occurring value in a set of numeric values.

MODE(value, value…)

value: A single number value, date/time value or duration value, or a collection containing these value types. Date/time values and duration values can’t be mixed with other value types. If either of these value types is included, all values must be of the same value type.

value…: Optionally include one or more additional values or collections of values.

Notes

  • If more than one number occurs the maximum multiple times in the arguments, MODE returns the first such number.

  • If no value occurs more than once, the function returns an error.

Examples

=MODE(5, 5, 5, 5, 6) returns 5, the number which occurs most frequently.

=MODE(1, 2, 3, 4, 5) returns an error as there are no repeated values.

=MODE(2, 2, 4, 6, 6) returns 2. Both 2 and 6 appear twice, the maximum number of occurrences of any number, so 2 is returned because it occurs first.

=MODE(6, 6, 4, 2, 2) returns 6. Both 2 and 6 appear twice, the maximum number of occurrences of any number, so 6 is returned because it occurs first.
