Capture your most recent MIDI performance in Logic Pro for Mac

Using Flashback Capture, you can capture your most recent MIDI performance, even if Logic Pro for Mac wasn’t recording while you were playing. You can capture MIDI notes while a project is playing or stopped.

When Cycle mode is off, Flashback Capture creates a region containing all the MIDI events received during playback. In Cycle mode, you can use Flashback Capture to create a new take region for each new cycle during which MIDI events are received.

When playback is stopped, Flashback Capture creates a separate region containing all the MIDI events received since the last playback. However, after a pause of 20 seconds between incoming MIDI events, those initial MIDI events before the pause are discarded. If when playback is stopped, you perform some MIDI events and then pause for 1.5 bars or longer, those initial notes aren’t included in the visible part of your region. If you do want those MIDI events to be included in the created region, you can drag the left region boundary to expose them.

Both in playback mode and when stopped, Flashback Capture captures MIDI notes and MIDI control change messages. When Record Automation with MIDI Regions is active, you can also capture volume, pan, and plug-in parameter adjustments in playback mode. See Choose automation modes for more information.

Note: The Flashback Capture button  in the control bar and Flashback Capture in the shortcut menu change from a dimmed state to an active state to indicate that MIDI has been captured and can be added as a region to your project.

Use Flashback Capture to recall a recent MIDI performance

  • In Logic Pro, make sure a software instrument track is focused, then do one of the following:

    • Click the Flashback Capture button  in the control bar (or press Shift-R).

    • Control-click the Record button  in the control bar, then choose Flashback Capture from the shortcut menu.

      A MIDI region containing the performance is created at the playhead position.

To capture MIDI notes without any tempo information, Control-click the Flashback Capture button, then turn off Flashback Capture MIDI in Stop Mode. When this setting is off, Flashback Capture places all the notes you played at the current playhead position, with a duration of one tick.

Use Flashback Capture to create take regions in Cycle mode

  1. In Logic Pro, choose Settings > Recording, then in the Overlapping Track Recordings area, choose Create Take Folder from the MIDI Cycle On pop-up menu.

  2. Turn on Cycle mode.

  3. Start playback and create/perform MIDI events.

  4. When you’ve finished your performance, do one of the following:

    • Click the Flashback Capture button  in the control bar (or press Shift-R).

    • Control-click the Record button  in the control bar, then choose Flashback Capture from the shortcut menu.
