Surround MultiMeter Goniometer in Logic Pro for Mac

A goniometer helps you to judge the coherence of the stereo image and to determine phase differences between the left and right channels. You can easily identify the left and right channels becoming mono (the shape changes toward a vertical line), if you created a wide stereo mix (the shape forms a fuzzy ball), or if you have out-of-phase content in your mix (the shape moves toward a horizontal line).

The idea of the goniometer was born with the advent of early two-channel oscilloscopes. To use such devices as goniometers, users would connect the left and the right stereo channels to the X and Y inputs, while rotating the display by 45° to produce a useful visualization of the signal stereo phase (known as a Lissajous figure). The signal trace slowly fades to black, imitating the retro glow of the tubes found in older goniometers, while also enhancing the readability of the display.

Because the Surround MultiMeter analyzes a multichannel signal, but a Goniometer only compares two channels, you need to select individual channel pairs of the surround signal to be measured and displayed in the Goniometer. This way, you can view the phase relationship between the left and right channel or the left surround and right surround channel (or other channel pairs if available in the selected project surround format). The channel labels at the top of the display change accordingly to show the speaker position.

Goniometer parameters

  • Goniometer button: Switch the main display to Goniometer mode.

  • Goniometer display: The display shows the goniometer based on the settings below.

  • Detection buttons: Select the channel pairs to be measured and shown in the main display. The number and appearance of these buttons is determined by the selected project surround format.

    • L-R: The left and right channel of any surround format.

    • Ls-Rs: The left surround and right surround channel of the selected surround format.

    • Lm-Rm: The left mid surround and right mid surround channel of the 7.1 format.

    • Lc-Rc: The left center and and right center channel of the 7.1 (SDDS) format.

  • Auto Gain knob and field: Set the amount of display compensation for low input levels. You can set Auto Gain levels in 10% increments, or you can turn it off.

    Note: To avoid confusion with the Auto Gain parameter found in other included effects and processors (such as the compressors), Auto Gain is only used as a display parameter in the meters. It increases display levels to enhance readability. It does not change audio levels.

  • Decay knob and field: Set the time it takes for the Goniometer trace to fade to black.

Goniometer Peak parameters

  • Peak pop-up menu: Choose the peak hold time for the Lissajous figure (in a dimmed blue color). Choose 2, 4, or 6 seconds—or infinite.

    Note: The Hold button must be turned on for the selected time value to have an effect.

  • Hold button: Turn on to show a cumulative view of the Lissajous figure.

  • Reset button: Clear the dimmed Lissajous figure.

    Note: Peak hold is also reset when deselecting the Hold button or starting playback.
