Surround MultiMeter Balance in Logic Pro for Mac

The main display in Balance mode shows a figure representing the speaker channels of the current project surround format. The various indicators provide information about the overall balance of your surround signal, along with detailed balance and correlation information between speaker pairs. An additional correlation meter shows the phase correlation between the LFE channel and other channels in your surround signal.

Depending on the chosen surround format, a number of points that indicate speaker positions are shown in the main display (L, R, C, Ls, and Rs in a 5.1 configuration are displayed in the figure).

Balance parameters

  • Balance/Correlation display: The display shows various correlation and balance indicators based on the settings below.

  • Balance/Correlation Meters: The figure in the main display represents the speaker positions of your surround format viewed from above. It shows the following elements that provide balance and correlation information:

    • Speaker position: The circled labels in the figure represent the speaker positions.

    • Line between speakers: Each speaker is connected with a line to the adjacent speaker to the left or right, or to the adjacent speaker in front or to the rear.

    • Blue dot on the line: The dot on each line represents the level balance between these two speaker channels. The higher the level on one channel, the closer the dot moves toward that speaker channel.

    • Line extending from the dot: A bright blue line extending from the blue dot indicates the phase relationship between these two speaker channels. The longer the line, the higher the amount of uncorrelated signals between these two channels. When the line turns red, this indicates that these two channels are increasingly out-of-phase.

    • Dimmed sphere: A dimmed sphere inside the figure indicates the balance of the surround signal. It shows the highest energy at that position (the sound placement in the surround field.)

  • LFE Correlation meter: Displays the phase relationship (ranging from -1 to +1) between the LFE channel and a signal that you choose with one of the LFE Correlation buttons.

    • A correlation of +1 means both signals are correlated 100%—they are completely in phase.

    • A correlation of 0 indicates that both signals are completely uncorrelated.

    • Correlation values lower than 0 indicate that out-of-phase material is present.

    • A correlation of –1 indicates that both channels are identical but with opposite polarity.

  • LFE Correlation buttons: Choose a button to determine what the LFE Correlation Meter measures. The correlation between the LFE and the center channel (C), the combined signal of the left, center, right channel (LCR), or the summed signal of all surround channels (Sum).

Balance Peak parameters

  • Peak pop-up menu: Choose the hold time for the Correlation deviation bar displays. Choose 2, 4, or 6 seconds—or infinite.

    Note: The Hold button must be turned on for the selected time value to have an effect.

  • Hold button: When turned on, the LFE Correlation Meter shows a colored horizontal bar indicating the correlation deviation (the range of correlation values during the defined hold time.) Red lines are shown in the surround figure if out-of-phase signals are present during the defined hold time. The blue dots remain at their most recent position.

  • Reset button: Clear all correlation displays.

    Note: Peak hold is also reset when deselecting the Hold button or starting playback.
