Distribute packages to Mac computers
A device management service can install packages (.pkg files) on supervised Mac computers using declarative app management available in macOS 26 or later or the InstallEnterpriseApplication command on any managed Mac. Declarative app management takes precedence and causes an install command for the same package to fail, similar to apps. Packages can also be defined as required or optional when using declarative app management.
A package needs to be signed with a signature verifiable by the device for distribution using a device management service. For more information, see Build an Installer package in Apple Developer documentation.
A package can contain one or multiple apps and optionally other content which gets installed outside of /Applications. Any app bundle which gets stored in /Applications can become managed and can individually be removed by the device management service using the remove application command. Use self-contained applications which can also include system extensions and background services. This removes the need for custom installation scripts.
